Abstract

This study examines the geomorphological characteristics of Tilangobula Village in East Suwawa District, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia, located within the tectonically active Limboto Zone. Through integrated field observations and geospatial analysis—including topographic maps, slope gradients, and drainage patterns—the research identifies structural hills as the dominant geomorphological unit, covering 2.356 km² with elevations ranging from 200 to 600 meters above sea level. The area exhibits two distinct drainage patterns (parallel and trellis) and variable slope gradients (2–140%). Morphogenetic analysis reveals the landscape has been shaped by both endogenic processes (notably oblique faulting, specifically a Normal Left Slip Fault) and exogenic factors (erosion of diorite and quartz diorite intrusions). The lithology comprises intrusive igneous rocks (diorite and quartz diorite), with structural features such as shear joints and faults further influencing the terrain. The findings highlight the interplay between tectonic forces and surface processes in forming the region’s unique structural hills, characterized by V-shaped valleys and steep slopes. This study provides critical baseline data for understanding understudied tectonic landscapes in eastern Indonesia and supports applications in regional geological research and land-use planning. The results underscore the importance of integrating morphographic, morphometric, and morphogenetic analyses to decipher complex geomorphological evolution in tectonically active regions.

Abstract

The purpose this study is to assess geological conditions and levels of heavy metal pollution arround the artisanal gold mining area in East Tulabolo, East Suwawa District, Bone Bolango Regency, to understand its impact on the environment. This study includes geomorphological, stratighraphic, and geological structural analyses as well as measurements of heavy metal content such as arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) in river sediments. The metods used include field surveys, sampling, and laboratory analysis with ICP-MS. While pollution levels were analyzed using the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo). The result showed that heavy metal concentrations exceeded safe limits, with the highest accumulation found in tailling sediments.. The Igeo analysis indicated a mild level of pollution due to the high concentration levels in the control area. This study emphasizes the need for sustainable waste management and ongoing contamination monitoring, including biota and groundwater sampling, to indetify risks of bioaccumulation and movement of contaminants into the wider eccosystem.

Abstract

Background: Groundwater serves as a fundamental resource for drinking, agriculture, and industrial processes, yet anthropogenic activities and environmental changes increasingly threaten its sustainability. This study, conducted in the Limboto Alluvial Plain, Indonesia, aimed to identify and map groundwater vulnerability by enhancing the traditional DRASTIC framework through the integration of the Multi-Influencing Factor (MIF) method. The implementation of the MIF method is proposed to improve the accuracy of the weighing system in evaluating the groundwater vulnerability. Methods: Seven thematic layers—depth to water, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography, impact of the vadose zone, and hydraulic conductivity—were generated and integrated using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The research replaced the conventional static weighting system with a dynamic MIF approach to systematically evaluate the interdependencies between hydrogeological parameters. The model's accuracy was empirically validated using nitrate concentration proxies to correlate high-risk zones with actual contamination levels. Findings: The study revealed three distinct vulnerability classes: low, moderate, and high. High-vulnerability zones were primarily identified in the central and southern regions, characterized by shallow water tables and highly permeable media. Validation results showed a strong correlation between these delineated high-risk zones and elevated nitrate concentrations, confirming the model's reliability in predicting sensitive areas. Conclusion: The study strongly recommends adopting this enhanced MIF-DRASTIC framework as a robust tool for sustainable groundwater management and land-use planning. It provides policymakers with a precise tool for mitigating contamination in alluvial contexts, though further longitudinal data could refine the model's temporal accuracy. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research is novel because it systematically addresses the inherent limitations of the static DRASTIC model by introducing dynamic weighting through the MIF approach. It uniquely integrates hydrogeological interdependencies within the Limboto Alluvial Plain, offering a more site-specific and refined methodology for groundwater protection that is more adaptable than traditional frameworks.

Abstract

Important geomorphological characteristics are studied to support regional management and disaster mitigation. This study aims to identify aspects of morphography, morphometry, and morphogenesis in the Olele area and its surroundings, Kabila Bone Subdistrict, Bone Bolango Regency. The research method integrates digital spatial analysis of DEMNAS data using ArcGIS with validation tests and field synthesis. The results show that the study area has an intermittent dendritic river flow pattern with river stages ranging from young to mature. Based on the synthesis of these parameters, the study area was delineated into four geomorphological units: alluvial plain units (11%), reef terrace units (7%), pyroclastic hill units (34%), and lava flow hill units (48%). The steep to very steep slopes (55%) on the porphyritic dacite lava flow hills are recommended for use as non-agricultural conservation areas with strict structural mitigation measures to reduce the risk of landslides and rockfalls along the Trans-Sulawesi route.
