Abstract

Multimedia usage has been becoming a good trend in language learning. The collaboration of application developers and educational practitioners has created many multimedia applications with various learning purposes. This study was purposed to determine the effectiveness of multimedia applications to improve students’ vocabularies. The interesting variable of this study was the subject. The subject is the children who live in the village near Rungan river bank, namely Petuk Katimpun village. It is located in a rural area, located about 25 kilometers from Palangka Raya city. Those children have limited access to the latest gadgets or e-learning applications, so the children got new experiences of learning language by conducting this study. The study results showed some positive effects of the use of multimedia applications for children in basic language learning. The children can recall their memory perfectly when they were tested on a vocabulary quiz. The children were also can imitate the pronunciation of the words given 80% correctly. However, for dictation, the children still found it difficult to write down the words they heard correctly. Overall, the multimedia application usage for teaching vocabularies is very beneficial for the children.

Abstract

At the College of Informatics and Computer Management (STMIK) Palangka Raya, English course appear in the curriculum of each study programs. This course is divided into English I and English II, for both undergraduate and diploma levels. One of the goals of learning English here is so that students have the ability to speak English both verbally and in writing. The mastery level of English skill will be very beneficial for the students to comprehend their major subject; technology informatics and computers. As in the perspective of academic achievement for English courses, the students can be categorized at good level. As for the final assessment of a student, it is assessed by the level of attendance for each lecture, individual and group assignments, and test scores taken form midterm test and final test. One of the problem faced both teachers and students in teaching learning English that the lecturers have not been able to provide learning and assessment comprehensively for listening skill mastery. As the impact the students get less opportunity to practice listening skill. It is caused that the college does not yet have adequate supporting facilities such as language laboratory.

Abstract

This research was purposed to describe the use of context clues in order to help students in improving their reading skills. There were still some difficulties in reading skill experienced by the students. The students at higher education have difficulties in reading comprehension because they have no motivation in reading habit; they read a little or nothing. Other students’ difficulties in reading comprehension were the low reading skill. However, it is known that reading and vocabulary are related to each others, so that the use of context clues is related to vocabulary. But it is also known that context clue also used in the sentence structures and the position of the main idea of the text. It can be concluded that the use of context clue can help students, either in secondary school or in higher education, to develop their practicing reading skill.
