Abstract

This study analyzes the internalization of character education based on Hindu and Kaharingan values at Pasraman Parentas, focusing on customs, ritual experiences, and teacher role models. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, then analyzed thematically. The findings reveal three pillars of character building: Hindu ethical education (tat twam asi and telu kapatut), reinforcement of values through rituals (Basarah, Tri Sandhya, Yoga), and teachers as role models. Character education here is not limited to cognition, but integrates cognition, emotion, and action. Habituation through social interaction, active participation in rituals, and teachers who serve as role models effectively foster honesty, self-control, loyalty, discipline, responsibility, and awareness of unity. This holistic and contextual model, which combines Hindu teachings and local Kaharingan wisdom, has proven effective in shaping students' moral and spiritual identities while remaining relevant in the context of multiculturalism and the challenges of globalization.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Public debates on the quality of education in Indonesia are often marked by empirical assumptions that place doubts on educational outcomes by attributing them primarily to the low professionalism of teachers. Such assumptions tend to oversimplify the problem, given that education is inherently a complex system involving interrelated structural, cultural, pedagogical, and ethical dimensions. Prematurely justifying teachers as the sole determinant of educational shortcomings therefore requires critical reexamination. This article aims to analyze issues of educational quality, with specific attention to Hindu Religious Education, through the lens of teacher ethics derived from Hindu teachings. The shift in the essence of the educator’s role, from the teacher as a moral authority, value bearer, and role model toward learning paradigms that emphasize student-centered activity, is viewed as potentially generating ethical tension when not accompanied by strong moral integrity and responsibility on the part of teachers. Within this context, religion is positioned as a primary source of ethical and moral values with a strategic function in the formation of a civilized society. Hinduism, as one of the religious subjects taught in Indonesian schools, contains a rich corpus of ethical teachings that remain highly relevant as foundations for teacher professionalism. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach based on a literature review of Hindu scriptures, academic works, and relevant prior studies. The discussion focuses on the nature of ethics in Hindu teachings, the concept of the teacher within Hindu tradition, and the application of sattvic qualities, wiweka (moral discernment), honesty, wisdom, and justice in the teaching and learning process. The findings indicate a persistent gap between the ethical ideals of Hindu teachings and the actual practice of Hindu religious instruction in schools, which remains predominantly oriented toward cognitive achievement rather than lived experience, moral exemplarity, and practical application of values. Consistent integration of Hindu ethics into pedagogical practice is therefore expected to enhance the quality of Hindu Religious Education by balancing cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains while strengthening the teacher’s role as an agent of dharma within the educational system

Abstract

The article aims to explain the relationship between Hindu religious insights and the diversity of socio-cultural backgrounds that must be understood in the context of Hindu religious counseling in society. This is closely related to the ability of Hindu religious counselors to deal with socio-cultural dynamics that also have an impact on the effectiveness of religious counseling. This study uses several literatures that provide an explanation of the importance of understanding the relationship between religion and socio-cultural society. The results of the study revealed that a deeper understanding of religion for a counselor positively correlates with the level of community understanding of religious values, while socio-cultural factors, including local traditions and social norms, play a key role in the process of religious counseling. A deep understanding of local culture allows religious counselors to design more contextual and relevant counseling programs for the community.

Abstract

This study stems from a critique of the global development paradigm, which tends to be reductionist in its understanding of sustainability by separating ecological, social, and cultural dimensions. This article argues that Hindu Kaharingan, as the religio-cultural system of the Dayak people, offers an integrative alternative model through the interconnection of cosmology, community, and continuity as the foundation of a sustainable civilization. Using a critical-interpretive qualitative approach, this study analyzes Kaharingan cosmology as a relational ontology, community practices as the basis for social sustainability, and the dynamics of continuity as a form of living heritage. The findings indicate that Hindu Kaharingan not only contains ecological ethics but also social and cultural mechanisms that support holistic sustainability. However, this integration faces tensions with a global paradigm that is fragmentary, technocratic, and tends to instrumentalize local knowledge. The novelty of this research lies in the development of an integrative sustainability framework grounded in religio-cultural principles that not only describes local values but also critiques power relations within global discourses. Thus, Hindu Kaharingan is positioned as a relevant epistemic resource in building a more reflective, relational, and contextual sustainable civilization.
