Abstract

Indonesia has a lot of diversity, one of which is in food. Carbohydrates are basic food needs that must be met, in Indonesia there is the potential for various alternative foods. One of the alternative food ingredients producing carbohydrates is hotong. Hotong is a plant that is often found in Indonesia but has post-harvest constraints, namely in the sowing process. Therefore, research was conducted to determine the performance of an abrasive roll type grinding machine with the characteristics of hotong seeds. The research was conducted at PT. Daud Teknik Maju Pratama in November 2022. The treatment of hotong seeds that are sprayed as many as three passes with various levels of rpm speed, namely 806, 940, and 1128 rpm and carried out three repetitions at each rpm. The performance test results of the crushing machine showed the highest scattered capacity and shrinkage at a rotating speed of 1128 rpm, the highest yield and effectiveness of skin separation at a speed of 806 rpm, while at the highest polishing quality at a speed of 940 rpm. Rotating speed affects the sowing results, the faster the engine rotation speed, the quality and capacity of the sowing will increase. In addition, the tilt angle of the machine also affects the result of the sowing capacity. The terminal velocity value is influenced by the weight of the hotong seeds, the higher the weight on the sample, the higher the terminal velocity value obtained. Keywords:  Abrasive Roll, Hotong, Polisher.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to optimize the number of vanes equipped in the propeller of a mist blower's nozzle. Performance tests were conducted on the approved sprayer test bed, also known as a patternator, to measure several parameters, including effective spraying discharge, effective spraying width, spraying angle, effective spraying height, effective spraying range, droplet diameter, and droplet density. The vane number was optimized using the weighting method. The results indicate that increasing the number of vanes used is directly correlated with higher values of effective spraying width (ESW), spraying angle, effective spraying range (ESR), and droplet density. Conversely, it is inversely correlated with the value of effective spraying discharge (ESD), effective spraying height (ESH), and droplet diameter. The vane number was optimized using the weighting method. The most effective results in the mist blower performance test are achieved by using 12 vanes. This configuration produces droplets with a diameter of 195.44 ±9.68 μm and a density of 320 ± 17.44 droplets/cm2. The mist blower also has ESW of 136 ± 1.73 cm, ESH of 68.14 ± 4.19 cm, ESD of 4.41 ± 0.14 L/min, and ESR of 5.76 ± 0.04 m. Keywords: Agricultural spraying, Mist blower, Nozzle optimization, Performance evaluation, Vane number.

Abstract

This study aims to determine and analyze the parameters of spray fogging performance for the application of pesticide fog. Air blower spraying performance can be increased by regulating the type of fan and type of air blower. Setting the type of fan in air blower is axial fan and centrifugal combined with cone of 4, 6, and 8 holes. The most optimum combination of the test treatment is the combination of axial fan air blower and 4-hole cone. Spray fogging can be increased by adjusting the combination spray angle between fogging machines and air blowers at various observation distances. The combination spray angle setting is angle of 15°, 30°, and 45° and the observation distance of 1 meter to 4 meters. The results of the analysis and determination of spray fogging performance parameters produce an angle of 45° as the most optimum spray angle from the observation distance of 1 meter to 4 meters. This is indicated by the average value of the droplet diameter of 78.74 μm, a 70 droplet/cm2 droplet density, an air flow speed of 1.97 m/s, and the temperature of the flocking of 31.8℃. Keywords: Air blower, Droplets, Fogging, Nozzle, Spray.

Abstract

A wide gap in the price of glucomannan flour and porang tubers leads to develop a machine to process tubers into fine flour with good performance. The purpose of this research was to analyze and determine the performance of a ball mill machine on the flour yield as well as its quality. Research was conducted at PT Daud Teknik Maju Pratama from January – May 2023. Testings were carried out under two treatment factors, namely rotational speed (21.2 and 41.6 rpm) and processing time (0.5 h, 1.0 h, 1.5 h, 2 h). The test was carried out using 150 g sample for each treatment with three replications. The response variables included capacity, percentage of size reduction, material losses, engine power, and flour quality. The results showed that the optimum capacity of the ball mill machine was 12.5 kg/batch. The highest percentage of size reduction was 96.27% and the lowest material loss (3.73%) were obtained at 21.2 rpm for 0.5 h of miling process. Treatment with 41.6 rpm for 2 h produced the best flour quality with moisture content of 11.87% and fine flower yield of 63.97% passing through 100-mesh sieve. The power requirements of electric motors at 21.2 rpm and 41.6 rpm were 0.8063 kW and 0.9101 kW, respectively. The best milling capacity (1.560 g/min) was resulted at rotational speed of 62.27% CS. The ball mill machine showed superior results as compared to a disk mill which was not able to grind the glucomannan crystals up to 100-mesh size. Keywords: Ball mill, Glucomannan flour, Performance test, Porang, Refining.

Abstract

Drip irrigation is one of the most widely used irrigation methods in agriculture because it delivers water directly to the plant's root zone or soil surface. This study aimed to analyze the performance of drip irrigation and compare it with conventional watering using a watering can. Twelve treatments were applied, combining four watering methods (drip irrigation with water, drip irrigation with water and nutrients, watering using a can with water, and watering using a can with water and nutrients) and three types of growing media (soil; a mixture of soil and rice husks; and a mixture of soil, husks, and manure). The results showed that the best coffee seedling growth was achieved through the drip irrigation treatment with water and nutrients on the soil, husk, and manure mixture (A2T3). This treatment resulted in a final plant height of 13.1 cm, stem diameter of 2.94 mm, 12 leaves, and a sturdiness index of 5.50. The drip irrigation system operated at a water discharge rate of 0.534 liters per minute with a water use efficiency of 75.15%. These results indicated that combining a complete growing medium with efficient irrigation and nutrient supply significantly enhanced seedling performance. In terms of cost, seedling production under drip irrigation ranged from IDR 6,450.06 to IDR 7,119.14 per seedling, while production using a watering can ranged from IDR 3,873.13 to IDR 4,645.20 per seedling. Although drip irrigation incurred higher costs, it produced higher-quality seedlings. Therefore, the use of drip irrigation with nutrients and organic-rich media is recommended as an effective and economically viable method for coffee seedling production. Keywords: Coffee Nursery, Cost Analysis, Drip Irrigation, Growing Media, Nutrients.

Abstract

Applying postharvest technologies such as edible coatings is one of effective method to extend the shelf life of bananas. Chitosan, an edible biopolymer, has excellent film-forming properties that allow it to coat fruit surfaces and prolong freshness. The coating method plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of edible coatings. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of coating method on the postharvest quality of Cavendish bananas through statistical analysis. In this research, 1.25% chitosan solution was applied using two methods: dipping and spraying, with uncoated bananas serving as the control. A knapsack power sprayer was used to apply the coating solution in the spray treatment. Bananas were stored at room temperature (26 ± 2°C) and 80 ± 5% relative humidity for 11 days. Results showed that spray-coated bananas experienced the lowest weight loss (14.51%) and disease severity score (3.33), highest value in L* (53,88), b* (30,97), pH (5,82) and pulp-to-peel ratio (2,57), firmest texture (28,06 mm/150g/5sec) along with slowest starch conversion (45%) by day-5. In comparison, dip-coated bananas lost 15.32% weight, highest TSS value (15,87), 65% degraded starch by day-5, lowest a* value (-0,44), and higher disease severity of 4.17. Uncoated bananas showed 15.25% weight loss, completely degraded starch by day five, and the highest disease severity (5.00). These findings indicate that the spray application of chitosan is more effective than dipping in maintaining banana quality during storage and supports its practical application in commercial postharvest handling.
