Abstract

Adit Sopo Jarwo is an Indonesian animation series that has gained quite high popularity in the past couple of years. However, there is still some dissatisfaction among its audience regarding the series? overtly didactic nature. This study aims to highlight and explain the didactic pattern of Adit Sopo Jarwo and to interpret this didacticism with regards to the social context that serves as the background of this work. For the purpose of this study, ten episodes of Adit Sopo Jarwo obtained from a YouTube search were analyzed. This study reveals the monolithic tendency of the didacticism of Adit Sopo Jarwo with the involvement of Haji Udin both direct and indirect as the source of wisdom. In the final analysis, the writer proposes the hypothesis of exclusivist but tolerant Islam as the explanation for the didactic pattern of Adit Sopo Jarwo.

Abstract

This article aims to propose a possible answer to the curious case of the popularity of Lamiyyat al-Arab as a means of education among Muslim leaders during the Umayyad era. The curiosity lies in the fact that Lamiyyat al-Arab is attributed to al-Shanfara, who was reportedly a su’luk, an outcast in the society who was also known as a brigand poet. To answer the curiosity, I conducted a literature review on who the sa’alik are and how they share some vision with early Muslims. This exploration makes up the first part of the essay. The second half of the essay is a textual interpretation on Lamiyyat al-Arab guided by the three horizons of interpretation as proposed by Fredric Jameson. Looking at three different horizons of meaning, textual, social, and historical, I strongly hope that the interpretation offer a glimpse into the desire for change that the poem shares with the early Muslims. This constitutes as a possible answer to the curious popularity of the pre-Islamic poem among early Muslims.

Abstract

The term diaspora has evolved in its use from referring only to the Jewish diaspora to referring to communities around the world that have spread beyond their cultural and historical homelands. The contemporary definition of the term includes what used to be the peripheral elements in the diaspora, i.e. the unexpected passengers in the diaspora vessel. In this article, I propose to ask about 1) how literary works by recent diaspora groups (non-Jewish diaspora groups) can be categorized as diasporic literature, and 2) what themes related to the diaspora experience they bring to the table. The study explores two works, i.e. American Dream by Ayad Akhtar, an American writer of Pakistani descent, and Green Card by Indonesian writer Dani Sirait. In the first work, American Dervish, one can find themes from post-9/11 Pakistani diaspora life in the United States with the special focus on the critical view of the diaspora community. Meanwhile, Green Card presents the story of an Indonesian man trying his luck as a migrant worker while maintaining his strong belief that his struggle in the foreign land matters more than his actual succeed in the pursuit. While having different causes for the spread of the communities to which the characters of the two works belong, both works appear to see the United States as the land of opportunity, the destination of the diaspora. These two works represent two cases of probably the most recent cases of unexpected passengers in the diaspora literature.

Abstract

TikTok has been used as a learning tool and effectively improved students’ knowledge and skills, particularly in language learning. However, the educational content on TikTok may not be compatible with the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML) principles that could reduce cognitive loads in multimedia learning. This research investigated the use of CTML principles, as well as the use of its features on the videos from one of the popular English Teaching channels on TikTok, @englishvit in order to contribute to educational knowledge about teaching practices with social media technologies. The researchers analyzed 40 out of 175 videos from @englishvit using content analysis through decontextualization, recontextualization, categorization and compilation. This study found that @englishvit’s TikTok videos are compatible with at least three principles of CTML, and some TikTok features could increase the compatibility or violate the CTML principles. These results recommended that teachers in digital education should improve the quality of the learning experience for students by applying principles of CTML and utilizing technology.

Abstract

This study examines how approaches affect the quality of translating the Mandarin children's narrative "对小虎的称赞" into Indonesian. This study examines how approaches affect translation quality. This study investigates how approaches affect Mandarin-to-Indonesian children's story translation quality, unlike earlier studies. This study uses qualitative research. This study found that the most common method of translating source data into the target language was literal translation. 87.70% of the data underwent literal translation, exhibiting average readability, accuracy, and acceptability. The average readability, correctness, and acceptability of semantic translation, 3.45% of total data, was good. Free translation comprised 49 cases (5.63% of total data) with worse readability, accuracy, and acceptability. We applied communicative translation to 0.92% of the data, which was readable, accurate, and acceptable. Faithful translation had 13 occurrences (1.49% of total data) of illegible, inaccurate, and poor translation. We adapted 0.57% of the data with legible, accurate, and acceptable translations. According to these data, translation method choice strongly impacts translation quality.

Abstract

Tantangan utama yang dihadapi pendekatan semiotika struktural saat ini adalah keterbatasannya dalam merespons kompleksitas media dan komunikasi modern. Di sisi lain, kecenderungan reduksi dalam praktik interpretasi semiotik—yang cenderung ahistoris dan mengabaikan kompleksitas budaya serta konteks lokal—memperlihatkan kebutuhan akan pendekatan yang lebih reflektif dan kontekstual. Tulisan ini merupakan sebuah conceptual – review paper yang bertujuan menyajikan pemetaan terhadap konsep-konsep kunci dalam semiotika sosial serta menjelaskan transisinya dari prinsip-prinsip semiotika struktural. Semiotika sosial diposisikan sebagai strategi analisis yang menekankan pada produksi, interpretasi, dan penggunaan tanda dalam konteks sosial. Dalam kerangka ini, sumber daya semiotik dilihat bukan semata sebagai sistem kode linguistik, melainkan sebagai modal sosial yang digunakan secara strategis untuk mengonstruksi makna. Kajian atas gaya, genre, diskursus, dan modalitas sumber daya semiotik memungkinkan pendekatan yang lebih kontekstual dan kritis terhadap praktik representasi, sekaligus mengungkap relasi kuasa yang tersembunyi di balik praktik semiotik dalam berbagai lingkungan sosial. Abstract One of the main challenges faced by structuralist semiotics today lies in its limited adaptability to the complexities of modern media and communication. Simultaneously, there has been a notable reductionism in semiotic interpretation practices—often ahistorical and inattentive to cultural and local contexts—highlighting the need for a more context-sensitive and reflective approach. This article is a conceptual – review paper that aims to map out the key concepts in social semiotics and trace the theoretical transition from structuralist principles. Social semiotics is positioned as an analytical strategy that focuses on the production, interpretation, and use of signs within social contexts. In this framework, semiotic resources are understood not merely as linguistic codes, but as social modalities strategically employed to construct meaning. The study of style, genre, discourse, and modality within semiotic resources enables a more critical and situated understanding of representational practices and exposes the socio-political power structures embedded in semiotic activities across diverse contexts.

Abstract

Faith is a vital element in the works of Nobel laureate Alexander Solzhenitsyn, a Russian writer who experienced the notorious Gulag and difficultly in a strongly atheistic country. However, faith is never a simplistic topic for Solzhenitsyn, especially writing in a time when religion was officially shoved aside from the public discourse. In the light of a set of views on religion inferred from Terry Eagleton’s essay, this paper aims to explain the anomalous religiosity as seen in the narrators of Solzhenitsyn’s novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and short story “Matryona’s House.” According to the Eagleton’s model, there are three stages of religiosity, namely, 1) omission of religion’s otherworldly and pure ritualistic elements, 2) acceptance of mentally-empowering potentials of religion, and 3) internalization of the humanistic values of religion. The analysis concludes with a notion that One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and “Matryona’s House” represent an evolution of faith that has gone through a period of challenge. On a sidenote, the analysis also confirms the dialogic nature of Solzhenitsyn’s works, in which one topic is presented through contradictory voices.

Abstract

This study examines the pervasive nature of hybridity in Indonesia, recognizing modern Indonesia as a nation shaped by the dynamic interaction of diverse influences. Acknowledging varying acceptance levels of this reality, the research synthesizes studies on hybridity in the country from the past fifteen years (2009-2024) to map the multifaceted landscape of hybrid identity. Through close reading and observation, the project investigates three core areas: (1) identifying primary loci where hybridity manifests; (2) exploring constituent elements contributing to hybrid identities, tracing their origins; (3) analyzing the spectrum of responses to hybridity. Analysis reveals that studies of hybrid identity in Indonesia encompass nearly all forms of cultural expression, spanning literature, culinary, architecture, music, and performance. This ubiquity highlights hybridity's deep integration into Indonesian cultural life. Contributing elements are equally diverse, drawing from Indonesia's rich tapestry of ethnic communities and global interactions shaping the archipelago over centuries. This confluence of local and global influences creates a dynamic cultural mosaic. The study finds that the dominant response to hybridity in Indonesia is one of embrace and celebration. Most research emphasizes the positive aspects of cultural fusion, highlighting the creativity and innovation born from blended traditions. However, some studies express concern about hybridity potentially threatening perceived essential values within specific cultural expressions. These contrasting perspectives underscore the ongoing dialogue surrounding hybridity in Indonesia and the need for nuanced understandings of cultural evolution. This research offers a comprehensive overview of current scholarship on hybridity in Indonesia, providing valuable insights into the dynamic interplay of cultural influences shaping Indonesia’s identity.
