Abstract

Mangrove ecosystem is a unique ecosystem with a mix of marine and terrestrial environment. Mangrove forests provide food and nutrients for other organisms such as fish, crustaceans, and algae. Red algae play an important role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems and food chains. This study aims to determine the types, morphological characteristics and key identification, the relationship of red algae types and substrate types to the ecosystem of mangrove forest in Dusun Ekas. This research is explorative descriptive by using purposive sampling method at 5 stations. Based on the results of the red algae study obtained as many as 14 species are: Bostrychia sp., B. radicans, B. tenella, Chondria sp., Laurencia sp., Polysiphonia sp., Murrayella sp., C. Leprieurii, C. Monostica, Gelidium sp ., Gelidium crinale, Catenella caespitosa, Catenella nippae and Catenella sp.Characteristics of the talus were found to have a cylindrical talus and some like leaves (blade). Red algae (Rhodophyta) found more in the station that dominated by Soneratia alba species.

Abstract

Microfouling is the attachment and colonization of bacteria and microalgae on the surface of objects immersed in the sea. So far, the control of biofouling on the surface of marine hulls has been using paints containing Tributylin Organotin (TBT) which have adverse effects on non-target organisms and are not friendly to the environment. The development of environmentally friendly antifouling paint is a solution to overcome the growth of biofouling. This study aimed to evaluate in vitro extract of Thalassia hemprichii as an anti-microfouling agent. Extraction of bioactive from Thalassia hemprichii was carried out by maceration. The filtrate is divided into five kinds of concentration, namely 0%, 25%. 50%, 75%, and 100% were then added to paint A as an anti-microfouling agent. The observed variables were microfouling biomass and the density of bacteria and microalgae attached to the steel plate. The results showed that with increasing concentration applied to the plate caused a decrease in the number of bacteria. The average decrease in each bacterial concentration was 84 x 10^6 CFU/mL, 65 x 10^6 CFU/mL, 41.5 x 10^6 CFU/mL, 28.7 x 10^6 CFU/mL, and 15.8 x 10^6 CFU/mL, respectively. Microalgae attached to the steel plate also experienced a reduction with the average values sequentially being 37 x 10^4 cells/mL, 14 x 10^4 cells/mL, 8 x 10^4 cells/mL, 5 x 10^4 cells/mL, and 2 x 10^4 cells/mL. Likewise, the microfouling biomass on steel plate also decreased in amount with the average values being 99.27 mg, 93.4 mg, 66.43 mg, 59.13 mg and 30.2 mg, respectively. Thus, Thalassia hemprichii extract has the potential to prevent the formation of microfouling.

Abstract

The increasing sea surface temperature could be approved CO2 levels on the coast. It has been assumed the primary productivity in the intertidal zone was to absorb CO2 from the water column for photosynthesis. In addition, the substrate floor has a potential source of CO2 from decomposers. Phytoplankton and seagrasses are the primary productivity in the intertidal zone. Both of them have chlorophyll, they maintain the CO2 as a carbon source to move the photosynthetic systems to develop the metabolism of the body's cells. The measurements were made of the leaves and rhizomes of all the seagrass species. The absorption process was clarified by measuring the growth rate, percent LOI, and percent carbon in the whole body of the Tetraselmis sp and Dunaliella sp, which were phytoplankton species isolated from seagrass ecosystems. Enhalus acoroides (Ea) had the highest carbon content.  On the other hand, Halophila ovalis and Halophila minor are the lowest carbon due to the distribution of Ea being the widest, they were found in all of the sampling areas. In addition, the factor that was supported was due to its high growth rate ability. Phytoplankton and seagrass on the coast of Sekotong Barat absorb CO2 in the water column and floor of the sediment (carbon sink). The presence of a different increase in carbon content between Tetrasemis sp and Dunaliella sp indicates, the species of phytoplankton respond differently to CO2 stress in the ocean.

Abstract
