Abstract

Abstract

Target 8 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) has a very close link to the works of botanic gardens. It highlights the importance of ex situ collections of threatened plants and their recovery programme. The aim of this paper was to present the Indonesian Botanic Gardens achievements in implementing Target 8 of the GSPC. It is shown that to date 21.5% of Indonesian threatened plants have already been collected ex situ in Indonesian Botanic Gardens. The reintroduction programme was also initiated. In its 14th meeting this year, SBSTTA recommended proposal for an updated GSPC (for 2011-2020), in which the Target 8 was changed to "At least 75 per cent of threatened plant species in ex situ collections" (from formerly 60 per cent). Thus, further work is still needed to increase these achievements.

Abstract

The Effectof Vegetation Structure and Composition in Determining the Conservation Value of Rehabilitation Area in the Wanagama I Forest and Surroundings. Wanagama I Forest has many types of land use that distinguished by a combination of agroforestry systems. The aim of the research is to determine the conservation value based on the bird diversity in each of the land use types and to understand the effect of vegetation structure and composition on bird diversity. The conservation value was measured using two factors, namely diversity index (H’) and conservation value index (CVI). Bird diversity was estimated using point counts method, while vegetation structure and composition was observed using systematic nested sampling. The highest H’ and CVI were found at the old growth forest (H’= 2.328, CVI = 2.556) while thelowest were detected at the bush (H’ = 1.607, CVI = 1.941). Rehabilitation effort significantly increased bird diversity. In accordance, vegetation structure and composition i.e. cover density, the number of species, dominance, and canopy strata, significantly affected the bird diversity (F = 2.979, P = 0.005). However, canopy strata (B = 0.20, P = 0.001) and density of vegetation atsapling level (B = 0.12, P = 0.036) were the most significant factors. Dominant species such as Gliricidea sepium and Tectona grandis were causative factors that attracted the olive-backedsunbird (Nectarinia jugularis) and insectivorous (Pycnonotus aurigaster and Orthotomus sepium). Keywords: Conservation index, diversity index, density, dominance, composition and structure, Wanagama I Forest

Abstract

The research was conducted in the Bawean island, East Java, where endemic Bawean deer’s inhabited naturally. The objective was to assess what kind of plant species as food resources in natural habitat of Bawean deer. The most Bawean deer habitats particularly lowland forests, are under the greatest pressure. Logging and land conversion have caused dramatic decreases in the forest cover of Bawean island, mainly in lowland, and forest margins are progressively shifting towards higher elevations. In that conditions, therefore a management practices should be implemented soon, for improving deer habitat. This study was focused on availability of food resources in the natural habitat of Bawean deer. Using indirect methods in the field to assess the remaining of food resources, which was consumed by Bawean deer, and fecal analysis was executed for identifying food deer items. The result, there were many species of plants as a food resources including Imperata cylindrical (lalang), Pericampylus glaucus (ancucu), Caryota mitis (andudur), Discorea hispida (gadung), Symplocos adenophylla (kayu sape), Coelorhachis muricata (lampedung), Scheria hebecarpa (lanting-lantingan), Paspalum cunyugatum (lambu merah), Argyera mollis (rombok putih), Lygodium circinnatum (taliata), Nephrolepis hirsitula (rending-rendang), Tridax procumbens (kenci-kencian), Brachiaria distachya (kabak-kabakan alas), Frimbrisyllis dichotoma (lente-lentean). The availability of those food resources was affected by season i.e., dry and rainy season, and the feeding habit of Bawean deers can allow adapting to the habitat condition. Based on that figure the Bawean deers may have so many several of food items in their natural habitat.

Abstract

Bogor Botanic Gardens is an ex-situ plant conservation area in Indonesia. Since BBG is 103 years old, many collections are 100 years old or older. These antique collections may sustain damage, such as broken or collapsing, endangering visitors and employees. As a result, monitoring tree health at BBG is a critical task. According to the tree health monitoring data, 73 of 244 trees were further checked using the PiCUS Sonic Tomograph. Trees from the Fabaceae (31%) and Myrtaceae (10%) families were the most frequently checked. Walnuts trees from the Burseraceae family had the most specimens (47,94%). The PST effectively provides an immediate picture of the stem condition by calculating solid and decaying wood percentage values.
