Abstract

Background:Caries formation is influenced by several factors such as teeth, microorganisms, biofilm, and also time. The initial bacteria that play an important role in biofilm formation is Streptococcus mutans. Probiotics made from these bacteria are considered capable of overcoming dental and oral health problems because they are able to suppress the biofilm which will coat and protect the mucosa from invasion by cariogenic bacteria such as caries.Purpose:To determine the effect of the probioticLactobacillus casei in reducing Streptococcus mutans biofilm growth (in vitro).Method:The research design carried out was experimental research with a post test only control group design. The research samples were divided into 3 groups, namely the chlorhexidine, distilled water and probiotic groups. Biofilm thickness testing was carried out by OD (Optical density) using an ELISA-reader. Parametric statistical test analysis using the Kruskal Wallis Test. Results:The results of the Kruskal Wallis statistical test showed P= 0.000 there is a significant difference in the 3 Streptococcus mutans thickness test groups. Conclusion:The probioticLactobacillus casei has the effect of reducing the thickness of the Streptococcus mutans biofilm

Abstract

Background: The management of anterior crossbite, especially in non-growing patients, is a challenging yet crucial aspect of orthodontic treatment. Anterior crossbite, if left untreated, can lead to significant functional and aesthetic issues, including abnormal dental wear, TMD, and compromised facial aesthetic. The correction of this type of malocclusion is essential to prevent long-term complications. In a non-growing patient, fixed orthodontic appliances have historically been the recommended treatment option for anterior crossbite. However, the use of orthodontic removable appliances has number of benefits, including patient comfort, ease of maintenance, and removability for oral hygiene purposes. This treatment modality is particularly advantageous for patients who seek a less invasive and more flexible approach to managing their dental condition.Case Report: The patient was a 24-year-old woman with a crossbite of the maxillary left permanent central and lateral incisors. Upper acrylic removable appliance, with an expansion jackscrew, was used to correct the crossbite. The total active treatment time was 2 months. In that 2-months period, the orthodontic treatment was not yet complete, but it was already showing good results.Discussion: The application of orthodontic removable appliance with expansion screw has shown promising results in addressing the challenge in anterior crossbite treatment. One of the primary benefits of using expansion screw in orthodontic removable appliance is its ability to apply gradual and controlled expansion forces. This allows for the realignment of teeth without causing undue stress on the periodontal ligaments and surrounding structure. Conclusion: The treatment of anterior crossbite in non-growing patients using orthodontic removable appliance presents a viable and effective alternative to fixed appliances. The positive outcomes observed in this case underscore the potential of orthodontic removable appliance to address similar malocclusions in non-growing patients.

Abstract

Background: Parenting a child with cleft disorder required special attention, because this is related to the psychological condition of the mother. Mother's psychological problems can affect the growth and development of children. The purpose of this study was to analyze psychological of mothers with cleft children. Method: The research method used in this research is descriptive analytic method with purposive sampling approach. Methods of data collection using a questionnaire to measure parenting stress, the short form parenting stress index (PSI) had adopted from Adibin has been tested for validity and reliability. The number of samples in this study were 150 mothers with cleft lip, palatal and cleft lip/palatal children.Statistic analysis with ANOVA test and Spearman test Result: The results of this study indicate that there are differences in the stress levels of mothers of cleft children between cleft lips (CL), cleft palate (CP) and cleft lips and palate (CL/P) non syndromic (NS). The significance value is 0.000 (p

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Aloe vera (AV) contains a variety of characteristic antibiotic and anti-inflammatory components that have potential advantages for periodontal disease therapy. Diagnostic and prognostic markers of periodontal disease through the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in gingival crevicular fluid. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of giving AV gel on alkaline phosphatase levels in rats with bacteria-induced periodontitisMethod: Thirty-six male Sprague dawley were healthy and active, weighing 170-200 grams, aged 2 months were distinguished into two groups: the control group of periodontitis given therapy Gel Metronidazole plus 25% and AV gel 99.03% as a treatment group. Aloe vera gel is administered topically in gingival sulcus at a dose of 300 mg/kg of rat weight. Samples were taken from gingival sulcus liquid on days 1, 2 and 3 using periopaper paper. Alkaline phosphatase levels are measured using a UV/Vis Spectrophotometer with a wavelength of 405 nm. Variant analysis is used to compare ALP levels in different groupsResult: There was significant difference in alkaline phosphatase levels between the control group and the treatment group (p>0.05). In Sprague dawley rats with periodontitis, there was a significant decrease in ALP levels on days 1, 2 and 3 given Metronidazole gel plus 25% therapy and AV gel 99.03%. But the treatment group showed lower ALP levels than the control groupConclusion: This study revealed that the use of AV gel locally has an effect and can be as an adjunct therapy for periodontitis

Abstract

Background: The aesthetic treatment of maxillary central diastema due to differences in tooth and jaw size is an important component of orthodontic treatment. Tooth size and shape are crucial factors that affect the smile and face in treatment results. From an orthodontic perspective, evaluating the ideal mesiodistal width of teeth in relation to the upper and lower jaw arches is necessary to plan for proper occlusion, aesthetics, and functionality.Case: A 19-year-old woman came to RSIGM Sultan Agung complaining that her upper front teeth appeared spaced apart and affected her appearance. The patient's medical history showed that he was in good general health. Extraoral examination was within normal limits. Intraoral examination revealed a diastema between the upper central incisors, normal frenulum attachment, an overjet of 3.4 mm, and an overbite of 3.1 mm. Analysis of the working model revealed a positive arch length discrepancy in the upper jaw, while other analysis results were within normal limits. The etiology of the diastema in this case was the size of the available dental arch and normal tooth size. The patient underwent treatment for central diastema using removable orthodontic appliances equipped with active and passive devices, as well as additional finger spring components to mesialize teeth 11 and 12 and close the maxillary central diastemaConclusion: Esthetic treatment of maxillary central diastema caused by differences in tooth and jaw size can be performed using removable orthodontic appliances with additional finger spring components. Patient cooperation during treatment and retention appliances are necessary to achieve stable long-term orthodontic results
