Abstract

Students face challenges in understanding the minimum competency assessment (AKM) mathematical literacy questions, as they struggle to interpret and solve the problems effectively. This difficulty stems from their low comprehension of the questions and limited problem-solving skills, particularly when confronted with questions differing from the examples provided by the teacher. This study investigates students’ abilities to solve AKM mathematical literacy questions using Polya’s problem-solving steps. The research is descriptive with a qualitative approach, involving a population of all Grade VIII students at SMP 21 Bengkulu City during the 2023/2024 academic year. The sample consisted of 30 students from class VIII.3 and 30 from class VIII.6. Data collection included test and non-test (interview) methods, utilizing AKM-based test instruments and Polya step-guided problem-solving tasks. Results indicated that 44 students (73.33%) demonstrated low ability, 11 students (18.33%) showed medium ability, and only 5 students (8.33%) exhibited high ability in solving AKM literacy questions. Overall, students’ problem-solving skills were categorized as low, with notable difficulties in planning, executing, and reviewing solutions to mathematical problems.

Abstract

Learning mathematics more often uses expository methods that are teacher-oriented which does not provide opportunities for students to construct their own mathematical ideas so that students become passive learners. Student confused about using mathematical concepts because students only memorized concept is not understanding it. This study aims to find out how apply Realistic Mathematics Learning (PMR) with Think Pair Share (TPS) so that there is an increase in activities and learning outcomes of mathematics. Type The research carried out is Classroom Action Research (PTK) with data collection techniques through student activity observation sheets and test results study. The subjects in this study were class VIIIB students of SMP Negeri 2 Bengkulu City. The results of this study indicate the application of Mathematics Learning Realistic (PMR) with Think Pair Share (TPS) type can improve activities and student learning outcomes of mathematics. Student activity is enhanced with giving contextual problems, proper group division, giving value add to the group that is ready to advance at the presentation. Enhancement student learning outcomes can be seen from the increase in the average value of students from cycle I up to the third cycle, namely: 74.48; 79.44; 83.16 with the proportion of mastery learning classical from cycle I to cycle III, namely: 58.33%; 77.78%; 86.11% and power student absorption from cycle I to cycle III is: 74.48%; 79.44%; 83.16%.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the practicality and effectiveness of a Problem Based Learning (PBL)-based Student Worksheet (LKPD) within a coastal context on the topic of relations and functions to improve the mathematical problem-solving abilities of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Kota Bengkulu. The study employs the Plomp development model, which consists of three stages: preliminary investigation, prototyping, and assessment. Practicality was measured through a small group test involving six students using the USE Questionnaire. Practicality results showed average scores of 4.25 for usefulness (very practical), 4.08 for ease of use (practical), 4.29 for ease of learning (very practical), and 4.17 for satisfaction (practical). Effectiveness was measured through classical completeness, N-gain score, and the Wilcoxon test. Effectiveness results revealed classical completeness of 80%, exceeding the minimum criterion of 60%, an N-gain score of 0.77 (high category), and a Wilcoxon significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. These findings demonstrate that the coastal-context PBL-based LKPD significantly improves students' mathematical problem-solving abilities.
