Abstract

This study examines how online media frames student demonstrations and how student voices are disarticulated in the news, especially in relation to the state's legitimacy strategy. The study period covers 2022 to 2024, when the intensity of the student movement increased in response to various public policy issues. The main purpose of this research is to uncover the practice of digital mainstream media representation of student actions and dissect the ideological power relations between state actors and civil society groups in the realm of media discourse. The approach used is Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model of Critical Discourse Analysis (AWK), which includes analysis at three levels: textual structure (lexical and syntactic), discourse practice (the process of production and consumption of texts), and social practice (ideological and institutional context). Five news articles from Kompas.com were analyzed in depth as the main sample. The results of the study show that online media tends to frame student actions through dictionaries that reduce the meaning of their struggle, such as "chaos," "secured," and "not conducive," while prioritizing quotes from state officials or security forces. This disarticulation plays a role in strengthening the state's authority in shaping public opinion and shows the tendency of the media as a hegemonic agent. These findings emphasize the urgency of ideological awareness-based media literacy so that people are able to criticize and not passively accept media discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to explain variations in the use of seller refusal strategies and politeness of refusal speech acts in the context of negotiation. To realize the above objectives, this study was designed using a language functional approach with a qualitative descriptive research type. The research location was carried out in traditional markets in Makassar City. The research data is in the form of utterances. The techniques used in data collection were (1) recording and (2) interviews. Data analysis in this study used an interactive model which included the following stages: (1) data collection, (2) data reduction, (3) data presentation, and (4) verification and concluding. This method is expected to produce new theories related to the language of rejection at TKT 1-3 levels. The results of the study show that (1) the speech patterns of sellers and buyers in traditional markets in Makassar City found four patterns. Namely, call-answer patterns, request-information patterns, offer-rejection patterns, and offer-accept patterns, and (2) the forms of speech used by sellers and buyers, namely assertive speech which functions to state. Directive speech is divided into four purposes or objectives. Namely, command, beg, invite, and ask. Meanwhile, expressive speech is divided into three purposes or objectives. Namely, thanking, praising, and satirizing. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan variasi penggunaan strategi penolakan penjual dan kesantunan tindak tutur penolakan dalam konteks negosiasi. Untuk merealisasikan tujuan tersebut di atas maka, penelitian ini dirancang menggunakan pendekatan fungsional bahasa dengan jenis penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Lokasi penelitian dilaksanakan di Pasar Maricayya Kota Makassar. Data penelitian ini berupa tuturan. Teknik yang digunakan dalam pengumpulan data adalah (1) perekaman dan (2) wawancara. Analisis data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan model interaktif yang meliputi tahap: (1) pengumpulan data (2) reduksi data, (3) penyajian data, dan (4) verifikasi serta penarikan kesimpulan. Dengan metode tersebut, maka dapat menghasilkan teori baru yang berkenaan dengan bahasa penolakan pada level TKT 1-3. Hasil Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) pola tuturan penjual dan pembeli di pasar Maricayya Kota Makassr ditemukan empat pola, yaitu: pola panggilan-jawaban, pola permintaan informasi-pemberian, pola tawaran-penolakan, dan pola tawaran-penerimaan dan (2) bentuk tuturan yang digunakan oleh penjual dan pembeli, yaitu tuturan asertif yang berfungsi menyatakan. Tuturan direktif terbagi atas empat maksud atau tujuan. Yakni, memerintah, memohon, mengajak, dan meminta. Adapun, tuturan ekspresif terbagi atas tiga maksud atau tujuan, yaitu: berterima kasih, memuji, dan menyindir.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the complexity of language use in digital interactions, particularly on social media, where variations of meaning, politeness strategies, and pragmatic failures frequently occur. The main problem addressed in this study concerns how speech act and politeness strategies are employed in social media conversations and how context influences meaning interpretation in digital interaction. This study aims to identify types of speech acts, describe politeness and impoliteness strategies, and explain the role of context in constructing meaning in social media discourse. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a pragmatic perspective. The data consist of 120 utterances collected from Instagram and Twitter/X through documentation and non-participant observation techniques conducted from January to March 2025. Data analysis was carried out through speech act identification, politeness strategy analysis, contextual interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that directive speech acts are the most dominant with 46 data (38.3%), followed by expressive speech acts with 34 data (28.3%) and representative speech acts with 25 data (20.8%). The politeness strategies identified include both positive and negative politeness, as well as the use of multimodal elements such as emojis to reinforce pragmatic meaning and reduce threats to the interlocutor’s face. In addition, impoliteness strategies were also found to function as expressions of emotion, criticism, and group solidarity. The study further indicates that limited contextual cues and the absence of nonverbal signals in digital communication may lead to pragmatic failure, including both pragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of pragmatic competence in achieving effective, polite, and contextual communication in the digital era. Abstrak Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kompleksitas penggunaan bahasa dalam interaksi digital, khususnya pada media sosial yang memungkinkan terjadinya variasi makna, strategi kesantunan, dan kegagalan pragmatik. Permasalahan utama dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana strategi tindak tutur dan kesantunan digunakan dalam percakapan media sosial serta bagaimana konteks memengaruhi interpretasi makna dalam interaksi digital. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis tindak tutur, mendeskripsikan strategi kesantunan dan ketidaksantunan, serta menjelaskan peran konteks dalam membentuk makna ujaran di media sosial. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan perspektif pragmatik. Data berupa 120 tuturan yang diperoleh dari Instagram dan Twitter/X melalui teknik dokumentasi dan observasi non-partisipatif selama Januari–Maret 2025. Analisis data dilakukan melalui tahap identifikasi tindak tutur, analisis strategi kesantunan, interpretasi konteks, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tindak tutur yang dominan adalah direktif sebanyak 46 data (38,3%), ekspresif sebanyak 34 data (28,3%), dan representatif sebanyak 25 data (20,8%). Strategi kesantunan yang ditemukan meliputi kesantunan positif dan negatif, serta penggunaan unsur multimodal seperti emoji untuk memperkuat makna pragmatik dan mengurangi ancaman terhadap face mitra tutur. Selain itu, ditemukan pula strategi ketidaksantunan (impoliteness) yang berfungsi sebagai ekspresi emosi, kritik, dan solidaritas kelompok. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa keterbatasan konteks dan minimnya isyarat nonverbal dalam komunikasi digital dapat menyebabkan kegagalan pragmatik, baik dalam bentuk pragmalinguistic failure maupun sociopragmatic failure. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini menegaskan pentingnya kompetensi pragmatik dalam membangun komunikasi yang efektif, santun, dan kontekstual di era digital.
