Abstract

The important role of collocation in learners’ language proficiency has been acknowledged widely. In Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), collocation is known as one prominent member of the super-ordinate lexical cohesion, which contributes significantly to the textual coherence, together with grammatical cohesion and structural cohesion (Halliday Hasan, 1985). Collocation is also viewed as the hallmark of truly advanced English learners since the higher the learners’ proficiency is, the more they tend to use collocation (Bazzaz Samad, 2011; Hsu, 2007; Zhang, 1993). Further, knowledge of collocation is regarded as part of the native speakers’ communicative competence (Bazzaz Samad, 2011); and lack of the knowledge is the most important sign of foreignness among foreign language learners (McArthur, 1992; McCarthy, 1990). Taking the importance of collocation into account, this study is aimed to shed light on Indonesian EFL learners’ levels of collocational competence. In the study, the collocational competence is restricted to v+n and adj+n of collocation but broken down into productive and receptive competence, about which little work has been done (Henriksen, 2013). For this purpose, 49 second-year students of an English department in a state polytechnic were chosen as the subjects. Two sets of tests (filling in the blanks and multiple-choice) were administered to obtain the data of the subjects’ levels of productive and receptive competence and to gain information of which type was more problematic for the learners. The test instruments were designed by referring to Brashi’s (2006) test model, and Koya’s (2003). In the analysis of the data, interpretive-qualitative method was used primarily to obtain broad explanatory information. The data analysis showed that the scores of productive competence were lower than those of receptive competence in both v+n and adj+n collocation. The analysis also revealed that the scores of productive and receptive competence in v+n collocation were higher than those of productive and receptive competence in adj+n collocation. The finding comes as a surprise since it turns out adj+n collocation is more problematic than v+n collocation both productively and receptively. Much research, by contrast, has reported that mistakes in v+n collocation are typical (Al-Zahrani, 1998; Nesselhauf, 2003; Liu, 1999; Sun, 2004). A conclusion has even been drawn that “v+n collocation is more difficult than adj+n collocation” (Kuo, 2009, p. 148). Though more studies are needed to support its finding, this research suggests the type of collocation deserve to get more attention from researchers.

Abstract

This study is aimed to identify the difficulties to comprehend listening activities experienced by students and their strategies in understanding Listening Comprehension section of TOEIC test. Descriptive qualitative method was employed to find out and analyze the difficulties and strategies the students implemented. The research was carried out at English Department of Politeknik Negeri Bandung with the population of the third semester students in Academic Year 2017/2018.  There were 22 students as the subject in this study. Data were collected by questionnaires and interview to confirm students’ answers. The results showed that the major problems encountered by students were unfamiliar vocabulary, accents of the speaker, speed of speech, lack of concentration, and quality of recorded materials. Listening strategies implemented by students were mostly metacognitive strategy since in this strategy they obtain the awareness of the materials they are listening to in a more cautious way. This method is about the ways of planning, monitoring and assessing the collected information from the listening section the same as pre listening activities. Students applying metacognitive strategies have the benefits such as they can use appropriate learning strategy to master learning materials; they comprehend learning materials more quickly and integrate the knowledge seriously; they put themselves to be loyal receivers and can be properly adaptable to all conditions; they have high confidences in themselves to get help when needed from their peers, teachers, or family; they pay attention to the materials and assess themselves as to how to be successful learners; and they properly deal with the problems in doing their task. Keywords: Students’ Difficulties, Listening Comprehension, Listening Strategies

Abstract

Collocations are one of the problems faced by EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners when learning English language. This study is intended to help the EFL Learners and non-native English speakers to add knowledge about collocations. Therefore, this study is aimed to find the use of lexical collocations and their meaning. This study used a descriptive qualitative research technique. The source of the data is eleven articles from eight sections in seventeen.com. om the research, there were 79 lexical collocations and they were classified as six out of seven types that Benson et al. (2010) proposed. The data showed that the most used type is L3 (adjective + noun) and the least used is L4 (noun + verb). The meaning of the lexical collocations was defined from the contexts.

Abstract

The national education department's inventory record is unique because the goods are in schools under service, not in the office. Inventory complexity has increased due to the procurement of different schedules and reports, not only for internal but also for other institutions concerned. A structured and accessible inventory from anywhere is the right choice for the effectiveness and efficiency of this work. This research aims to design a website-based information system for goods inventory in the National Education Office (DISDIKNAS). The software development method used in this study is the Rational Unified Process. The study results obtained a web-based application that can help DISDIKNAS inventory goods in a structured and accessible anywhere

Abstract

Inventory of goods at large institutions is a complicated activity; one solution is to create a structured web application system that can be accessed anywhere. At the National Education Office, it is not only inventory management that is a problem but also the management of the School Operational Assistance Fund (BOS). Data security must be a priority because it involves significant funds and can be misused by irresponsible parties. This study aims to apply Two Factor Authentication to the Goods Inventory System and BOS Fund Management. The first stage is verification by the DISDIKNAS admin at each level of education. Next, a verification email will be sent to the registrant for verification. The results showed that the use of 2FA did not interfere with the performance of the web-based application or its users. The approval rate for the system is 97.4%. This research contributes to the implementation of website security and can be applied to similar systems

Abstract

The research analyzes the translation strategies of idiomatic expressions found in a marketing monograph entitled Marketing 4.0: Moving from Traditional to Digital and Marketing 4.0: Bergerak Dari Tradisional ke Digital. This study aims to identify the use of translation strategies and the most used strategy to translate idiomatic expressions in those monographs. The theory applied in this study is from Mona Baker (2018). The results of this study revealed that the translation strategies found are using an idiom of similar meaning and form (SMF), using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (SMDF), translation by paraphrase, and translation by the omission of a play on idiom. Moreover, the most frequently used strategy found is the paraphrasing strategy (69.23%). The results of this study are expected to provide a better understanding of translation strategies for idiomatic expressions to the readers.

Abstract

Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in research on English collocations, yet studies focusing on Indonesian collocations remain underexplored. Collocations are crucial for language acquisition as proficiency in collocations is indicative of language competence. This study, therefore, intends to reveal and map the patterns of Indonesian lexical and grammatical collocations through a contrastive analysis with English collocation patterns. The research was primarily qualitative, utilizing the phraseological approach supported by a corpus for collocation identification. The word classes of the collocation patterns were determined using KBBI V (the unabridged Indonesian dictionary). Data were sourced from main reports of Tempo magazine and headlines of Kompas as well as Pikiran Rakyat newspaper, comprising a total of 14,206 words. The data yielded a total of 1,488 instances of Indonesian collocations, divided into lexical collocation with 994 instances (66.8%) and grammatical collocation with 494 instances (33.2%). The investigation reveals nine sub-types of Indonesian lexical collocations, seven of which correspond to English lexical collocation sub-types while the other two are Indonesian-specific patterns. With respect to grammatical collocation, Indonesian possesses 14 sub-types, with eight aligning with English patterns and six unique to Indonesian. Future studies are required to delve more into and shed light on Indonesian collocations.
