Abstract

The present research is analysing job ads to find out the jobs that require English skills and other skills apart from English language. The job ads analysed were those that appeared on well-known Indonesian newspapers which were published in the periods of May, June and July 2016. The research found that all of the four language skills were required in the world of work, the emphasis, however, is put on active language skills such as speaking and writing. The present research also suggest that most of all professional position especially of administrative officers require their applicants to have English skills.Computer skill as well as communication skill have become the main supporting skills in applying for jobs. Despite the fact that  they are all Indonesian newspapers using Indonesian as the main language, a number of ads were written in English. Although such a proportion is still below the number of ads written in Indonesian, those English language ads show us how important English is to the applicants.   Keywords:job ads, English skills, applicants

Abstract

Penelitian ini menganalisis 50 buah iklan lowongan pekerjaan berbahasa Inggris di surat kabar Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi struktur nominalisasi dan penggunaannya pada iklan lowongan pekerjaan. Documentary studydigunakanuntuk menganalisisdata penelitian. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa struktur nominalisasi yang terdapat pada iklan lowongan pekerjaan adalah struktur yang kompleks karena struktur tersebut terdiri atas head yang dipremodifikasi oleh deitic, numerative, epithet, dan classifier dan diposmodifikasi oleh frase preposisi. Selain itu, hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan nominalisasi ditemukan di semua bagian iklan.

Abstract

This study is aimed to identify the difficulties to comprehend listening activities experienced by students and their strategies in understanding Listening Comprehension section of TOEIC test. Descriptive qualitative method was employed to find out and analyze the difficulties and strategies the students implemented. The research was carried out at English Department of Politeknik Negeri Bandung with the population of the third semester students in Academic Year 2017/2018.  There were 22 students as the subject in this study. Data were collected by questionnaires and interview to confirm students’ answers. The results showed that the major problems encountered by students were unfamiliar vocabulary, accents of the speaker, speed of speech, lack of concentration, and quality of recorded materials. Listening strategies implemented by students were mostly metacognitive strategy since in this strategy they obtain the awareness of the materials they are listening to in a more cautious way. This method is about the ways of planning, monitoring and assessing the collected information from the listening section the same as pre listening activities. Students applying metacognitive strategies have the benefits such as they can use appropriate learning strategy to master learning materials; they comprehend learning materials more quickly and integrate the knowledge seriously; they put themselves to be loyal receivers and can be properly adaptable to all conditions; they have high confidences in themselves to get help when needed from their peers, teachers, or family; they pay attention to the materials and assess themselves as to how to be successful learners; and they properly deal with the problems in doing their task. Keywords: Students’ Difficulties, Listening Comprehension, Listening Strategies

Abstract

This study is about an analysis of grammatical and mechanical errors made by the students across the three levels of writing ability: high, average, and low. The grammatical and mechanical aspects analyzed were subject-verb agreement, sentence fragment, conjunction, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. The present study aimed to find out the most common grammatical and mechanical errors and to identify the percentage of each error found in the essays. Students’ essays taken from their English writing quiz were collected as the data since they might contain grammatical and mechanical errors. This study employed textual analysis and was supported by simple calculation to determine the frequency of each error found. The data were analyzed by identifying the errors, explaining why the errors are incorrect and writing the proper corrections, and evaluating the errors to get the percentage of each error found. The results showed that the most common grammatical error found is the use of conjunction, that is around 20.6%, and the most common mechanical error found is punctuation by around 21.6%.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the study on analyzing the persuasive language used in advertisements in magazines. The aim of this study is to identify the types of persuasive language used in advertisements in Forbes magazine and to analyze the dominant types of persuasive language found in the advertisements. Therefore, the qualitative data were collected from a recognized magazine entitled “Forbes”. The data were analyzed based on the types of persuasive language found by Kannan & Tyagi (2013). The results show that there are 10 types of persuasive languages used in the advertisements in Forbes magazine: long noun phrases, short sentences, avoidance of negative, use of imperatives, weasel words and repetition, hyperbole, simple and colloquial language, alliteration, and syntactic parallelism. Among the 10 persuasive language types, the most dominant one is long noun phrases. The implication of the study may be used to EFL learning and teaching and translation persuasive languages.

Abstract

Volume sampah di kampung Sampora meningkat seiring dengan meningkatnya jumlah penduduk. TPS tidak dapat menampung sampah, akibatnya menumpuk dan menimbulkan pemandangan yang kurang enak serta bau yang kurang sedap. Begitu juga dengan kesadaran dan pengetahuan  masyarakat terhadap sampah, masih rendah. Sampah dibuang sembarangan atau  dibakar,  asap pembakaran menimbulkan polusi. Polban sebagai salah satu instansi, turut mengambil peran dalam  membantu menyelesaikan permasalahan ini melalui kegiatan PKM. Bedasarkan hasil survey, tim PKM Polban mengambil langkah solusi sebagai berikut : edukasi masyarakat, unit terkecil yakni keluarga  untuk terbiasa dengan pilah sampah  melalui program 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Pelatihan pemanfaatan sampah anorganik, membuat produk daur ulang yang dapat dimanfaatkan untuk keperluan sehari-hari atau dijual untuk menambah penghasilan. Pelatihan sampah organik, membuat pupuk untuk penghijauan, dan pendirian bank sampah untuk mengurangi volume sampah yang masuk ke TPS. Metode yang digunakan adalah : pelatihan, bimtek, pendampingan, dan fasilitasi yang dilakukan sesuai protokol kesehatan sehubungan dengan pandemi.  Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa  kesadaran dan kepedulian masyarakat meningkat, sebagian masyarakat sudah mulai memilah sampah, memanfaatkan pupuk sampah  organik untuk tanaman. Sampah anorganik yakni  kresek dan botol minuman (sampah dominan)  untuk kerajinan : bunga, tas, dompet, dan lain sebagainya. Berdirinya bank sampah selain dapat mengurangi sampah anorganik juga dapat memberi penghasilan tambahan bagi nasabahnya.  Kegiatan PKM ini diharapkan dapat memberi implikasi pada peningkatan  kepedulian masyarakat terhadap sampah dan membangun kemandirian masyarakat dalam mengelola sampah. Berdasarkan hasil analisis kuesioner,  terdapat perbedaan tingkat pengetahuan, perilaku terhadap pengelolaan sampah dan ketersedian sarana kebersihan sebelum dan setelah kegiatan PKM.
