Abstract

This article describes Indonesian Government effort dealing with new regulation in European Union, namely EU Directive which prohibit palm oil use for biodiesel. The European Commission has concluded in a regulation that palm oil use in biofuels will be reduced to zero by 2030. This regulation is based on allegations against oil palm plantation that causes excessive environmental damage. Environmental issues that arise as a result of the growing awareness of the international community in preserving the earth are often contrary to the wishes of a country in developing its economy. Campaigns from environmental activists in Indonesia highlight a lot about the palm oil industry which is often considered not sustainable and causes environmental damage. On the other hand, this campaign caused a negative reputation followed by the decline of Indonesia's palm oil exports to Europe. One of the regulations that arose was the EU Directive which was considered by the Indonesian government as discrimination against oil palm products and their derivatives. This article uses a qualitative analysis method. This study aims to analyze how the Indonesian government responds to the EU Directive regulation on Palm Oil which is considered detrimental to Indonesia's palm oil exports to Europe.

Abstract

Keywords: Anggaran Pertahanan Indonesia, Security Dilemma, Arms Race, Kawasan Asia Tenggara

Abstract

Providing space for sub-state actors’ actions at the micro-regional level is a significant trend in advancing regional integration in ASEAN. Transnational activities have contributed to the trade development and optimization of each country’s local production, a strategic goal, and micro-regions have emerged as critical players in this activity. Regional integration will be localized if sub-state actors play a significant role and engage in smaller regionalism activities, such as in border areas. With the goal of encouraging prosperity and reducing development gaps, especially for people in border areas, this research examined the collaboration of sub-state actors across ASEAN countries as an alternative development paradigm. Alternative research hypotheses applicable in various scientific disciplines were included in this research through a qualitative analysis method and a reflective case study approach. This research focused on the roles and activities of sub-state actors in border areas such as the Riau Islands with Malaysia and Singapore, who could work hard together with other sub-state actor entities through the support of a strong leadership network to take quicker and more efficient actions to overcome various issues. This research strengthens the existing literature by discovering that the collaboration of sub-state actors between countries in the border region has played a big role in encouraging the border community to advance and compete in the international arena, and ASEAN has become an institution encouraging and guaranteeing equal development for people in the border areas.

Abstract

This paper examines the effectiveness of the Indonesian Government's strategy in dealing with regulations that limit the consumption of palm oil in Europe called the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II). This prohibition was followed by a decrease in palm oil exports to Europe which made the Indonesian government try to carry out a countering anti-palm oil campaign (CAPOC) led directly by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Some of the efforts that have been made include improving downstream sector governance, expanding Indonesia's palm oil exports destination countries besides Europe, such as America, Asia, and Africa, revitalizing and rejuvenating palm oil plantations, conducting intergovernmental diplomacy (G to G) between Indonesia and countries within the European Union, upgrading the B-20 program to B-30 to B-100 and finally CAPOC. The results of the study show that from several strategies carried out by the government, improving downstream sector governance, expanding the scope of Indonesian palm oil exports, and increasing the B-20 program to B-30 are the most effective strategies in dealing with RED II in Europe. This paper uses a qualitative method used secondary data and descriptive analysis techniques in explaining the existing data. This paper aims to describe the effectiveness of the strategies that have been carried out by the Government of Indonesia in dealing with RED II regulations in the European Union.

Abstract

Question about which factors that influenced the rise of authoritarian in political behavior has been long discussion among academician. Many believes economy play a big role of how people choose to a certain political behavior. According to several recent studies, globalization play significant economic and political effects throughout the industrialized world. This paper seeks to answer the previous query based on article entitled “Economic Decline, Social Identity, and Authoritarian Values in the United States,” by Ballard-Rosa, et.al (2022), while also seek the strengths, and weaknesses from the readings and try to discover new research questions that arise from the article. They argue that long-term economic developments brought by globalization have a detrimental influence on traditionally dominant populations' social identities. Specifically, they suggest that changes in economic conditions and job status can cause shifts in authoritarian values, which is one way that globalization can contribute to people supporting extreme political candidates. This paper adds to literature revolving around authoritarian literature in at least three ways. To begin with, it throws new insight on the roots of populism and support for radical individuals and parties. Second, it gave new information on authoritarian beliefs' roots, which show that at least in part, authoritarian principles are susceptible to current economic and social situations. Third, the study emphasizes the necessity of comprehending how different forms of economic shocks may impact social identity and status, as well as political conduct.
