Abstract

The adoption of online learning is one indication of increased technological empowerment in education. Teachers apply online learning to achieve learning goals even at a distance. However, the implementation of online learning falls short of educators' expectations. This study aimed to discover the perceptions of eleventh-grade students at SMA Taman Mulia and the challenges they confront during online English language teaching and learning. This study used an online survey to collect the data. From the data, 61% of students negatively perceived online English learning whereas 57% of students agreed that materials become harder to understand during online English language teaching and learning. Meanwhile, students gave positive perceptions regarding assignments and the teacher's explanations. The study also found that most students faced challenges such as incomprehension, lack of vocabulary and fluency, lack of communication, unmotivated, limited time, and low signal and internet quota. Therefore, it is clear that online English language teaching and learning require more focus in terms of both materials’ delivery and students’ challenges, particularly those related to understanding.

English is becoming a foreign language in Indonesia. There are several resources that can be used by the teacher and instructor to facilitate the teaching and learning process in gaining the four main English skills. A textbook is becoming one of the learning resources in formal and informal education. The learners are expected to master the source, target, and international culture during the learning process. This research aims to explain the key terms related to the topic being discussed and to identify the importance of bringing images and cultural content into English textbooks for an intercultural classroom atmosphere. A descriptive qualitative study that utilizes the library research methodology is implemented to gather the data for this research. The findings show that images and cultural contents are the important keys as they can get the students’ interest and attention during the class hour, images can also be the representation of how culture is done, and if the images and cultural contents are combined together it will help the students to get the deeper understanding of imagination about things that they cannot see directly at the classroom.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) needs of accounting students in the Economy and Business program at Tanjungpura University. A sample of sixty-four students (N=64) participated in this study. The quantitative data were obtained through a descriptive statistics analysis of a questionnaire, and the qualitative data were collected from an interview related to the perceptions of the students’ needs. It should focus more on developing English speaking and listening skills to better prepare students for their future careers, especially in the Economy 4.0 era, where they will encounter global opportunities. This underscores the importance of conducting a need analysis, which is a fundamental step in the ESP field.
