Language is an inseparable part of our everyday lives. Language is the main tool used to transmit messages, to communicate ideas, thoughts, and opinions. Language is also said to be a vehicle of culture. It consists of the culture of communicating which implies that there are certain typical institutions in language activities. When people use a language, we can guess their culture, espoused values, or even their beliefs or religions. We also can understand their manners, way of thinking, and the honesty they have. Indirectness is a widely used conversational strategy. People tend to use indirect speech acts mainly in connection with politeness since they want to lessen the unpleasant message contained in requests and orders, for instance. The purpose of this paper is to obtain an overall understanding of indirect speech acts found in some State Address by the President of Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, regarding various things. The President wants to convey diverse messages to the people through indirect speech acts, and at the same time, to increase the force of the message communicated.

Abstract

Learning a foreign language, in this case English, usually means learning to speak in that language while understanding it. Therefore, language learning always involves two elements, namely comprehension and production. Both elements are closely related to the study of language learning performance, especially in foreign language learning. Related to that, a quantitative research was conducted over 33 learners of English in order to find out the extent to which the learners understood the structure of simple English sentences related to their ability to produce English sentences. Research data was obtained through 2 kinds of tests. The data about comprehension was in the form of true or false cloze-test of totaling 50 simple sentences with the argument structures. While the data of production was in the form of written tests of simple sentence constructions based on pictures and instructions about the pictures. Both of the tests used a number of verbs most commonly remembered by the students of English Department, Darma Persada University. The result of the research showed that their comprehension level was 65.64% with a variation in the distribution score between them was 8.79, and their production was 28.36% with a standard deviation of production of 17.37. The gap between the level of comprehension and the level of production was relatively large which means that the average production competency of the subjects was below their comprehension competency.

Abstract

Nowadays, people can easily access everything with one-click away. For example, when you want to read an article in foreign language which you are not familiar with, then you just need to open Google Translate and within seconds, you will get the translation of it. To deal with that reality, a translator has to differentiate himself from machine translation which is increasingly used by the public. Therefore, the translator is required to produce an equivalent and natural translation in the Target Language. This research aims to provide understanding of translation equivalence on video transcripts conducted by students in Movie Translation (Subtitling) course. This study uses qualitative approach, content analysis method, and purposive sampling to collect data. In short, there are two types of translation equivalence used by students, formal and dynamic. Formal equivalence focuses on the similarity of the form and meaning of the message from Source Language to Target Language, while dynamic one focuses on the naturalness of expression in the Target Language.

Abstract

Abstract

Telling a story about mental problems of teenagers, the novel All the Bright Places was adapted into a film with several differences in characterization, setting, and theme. The purpose of this study is to analyze the comparison of character and characterization of life and death instincts in the novel and film All the Bright Places. Furthermore, this study also aims to reveal different ideas through this adaptation. A qualitative descriptive method, adaptation theory by Hutcheon & O’Flynn, and Freud’s theory of life and death instinct were used in this research. By comparing the novel and film and using Freud's theory and adaptation theory, it shows that there is a life and death instinct in Finch's character that is different between the novel and the film. The novel shows more death instinct to show the message of adolescent psychological problems, while the film shows more life instinct with the aim of emphasizing the romantic side. In conclusion, through this adaptation analysis, there are differences in ideas or themes between the novel and the film All the Bright Places. The novel emphasizes the theme of adolescent mental problems while the film emphasizes the problem of teenage romance.
