Abstract

Translating prepositions in, on and at is not an easy job for EFL students since the meanings relate to locating object, time, and degree. With regard to this point, this study aims at identifying strategies, methods, and procedures used by EFL students to translate preposition in, on and at. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are applied in this study. Think-Aloud Protocol data collecting technique carries out to identify student’s strategies, methods, and procedures in translating prepositions in, on and at. To do this, the data of student’s transcriptions and students’ translations obtained from three students were analyzed. The findings indicate that students use more than one strategies, methods and procedures.

Abstract

This paper has intention to show the symbols hidden in the character of the novel The Old man and the sea. Furthermore, this paper has goal to find the connection between symbol and characters. The method uses in this research is qualitative research. The analysis involves characterization in this novel. It shows major and minor characters. Most of major character symbolizes something. Such as the old man symbolizes hero and the boy Manolin symbolizes purity. Not only the characters in this novel symbolize something but also the other elements in this novel symbolize something. For instance the sea symbolizes great nature and birds symbolizes friend. Studying the characters and symbol in this story offers more understanding to the readers.

Abstract

In line with technological developments, English learning media can be done through You Tube. You Tube developed into You Tube Kids to cater to children consumers. You Tube Kids provides various interesting channels in English such as Peppa Pig, Coco Melon and Ania-Elsia. An interesting phenomenon was found in a child who is able to speak English because he often watches Ania and Elsia's You Tube channels. In their daily habits, the child uses Indonesian as the first language and English as the second language. This study tries to reveal the influence of You Tube Kids on second language acquisition. The study of first and second language acquisition material is in the field of psycholinguistics studies. The research method used is a qualitative research method using case study research. From this research, You Tube Kids is very influential in the acquisition of a second language in terms of cognitive, vocabulary and pronunciation of words well.

Abstract

In the development of technology, all aspects experience the same development, including literature. Technology had greatly influenced the production and reception of literature. Changes in literary works by utilizing current technological media can also be called cyber literature. However, the ease of technology might lead problems. The teacher who would use cyber literature as learning material took it without any guideline on what is the value that existed in the cyberliterature. So that this study aimed to analyze character education that appears in folklore cyber literature in Indonesia. The results of this study will be a guide for high school English teachers in choosing what characters to use in narrative learning using folklore. The approach used in this research was a descriptive qualitative approach. The data source of this research was cyber literature in the form of folklore. The selection of the title of folklore in Indonesia was based on the results of a poll from the SINDO newspaper which found that there were 10 popular folk tales. The result of the study showed that from 10 the most popular folklore in the internet, 6 out of 18 characters existed in the story. They were Responsible, hard work, honesty, self-reliance, creative, and love country. Even though, the value mostly based on the protagonist of the story, we could also see the contra value that promoted by the antagonist, such as dishonesty..

Abstract

The research on male and female languages is an interesting issue that has emerged not only in Indonesia but also in other countries. This study aims to clarify request strategies used by men and women and the reasons why they use it. It presents three separate studies, namely pragmatics, sociolinguistics and technology. Content analysis is used in this research and the data are five Ome TV videos taken from You Tube.  The participants in those videos are males and females came from different cultural background. The findings show different request strategies used by male and female because of several reasons. To summarize, male and female use different request strategies that lead to different gender characteristic.

Abstract

Budaya adalah cara orang berperilaku, bersosialisasi dengan orang lain dan menggunakan bahasa yang biasa dia gunakan. Budaya dapat berubah dalam banyak hal. Cara orang berbicara, cara orang memakai pakaian, dan cara orang menggunakan teknologi. Budaya pop dapat ditemukan dalam cerita Everything Everything oleh Nicola Yoon. Hal ini tercermin dalam cara karakter berperilaku dan cara karakter memiliki hubungan dengan orang lain. Salah satu faktanya, novel ini memiliki kisah romantis yang disukai oleh orang-orang saat ini. Novel ini juga menunjukkan budaya yang berbeda dari dunia yang berbeda. Selain itu, novel ini menunjukkan bagaimana remaja berperilaku di era mienial. Peneliti dalam novel ini mencoba untuk mengetahui beberapa karakteristik budaya populer dan hegemoni. Novel ini dianalisis menggunakan metode kualitatif. Analisis wacana digunakan untuk menganalisis data dalam novel ini. Bagian analisis wacana yang digunakan adalah analisis semiotika oleh Roland Barthes dan analisis wacana struktur mikro oleh Halliday. Berdasarkan penelitian, penulis menemukan budaya populer berkaitan dengan kehidupan remaja Amerika. Penulis juga menemukan beberapa hygemoni seperti kebebasan, perkawinan, keluarga dan dominasi orang-orang yang bekerja di posisi tinggi.

Abstract

The speaker on Cokro TV's Youtube video, Ade Armando, expressed his opinion about the discourse of non-mahram which has invited controversy. The discourse of non-muhrim has sparked debate because it is associated with social problems that occur in society, namely choosing a doctor who is adjusted to the gender of the patient. This research emphasizes more on the ideology that the speaker wants to convey and the strategies used by the speaker to express his ideology. The critical analysis model used in this research is Van Leeuwen's critical analysis model. This research model is used to determine the social actors supported and marginalized by the speaker. This research uses a qualitative research approach with content analysis method. The results showed that the speakers used exclusion and inclusion strategies. The exclusion strategy used by the speaker leads to a passive discourse strategy, while the inclusion strategy used by the speaker leads to an identification discourse strategy.

Abstract

Beberapa slogan pendidikan yang diterjemahkan tidak sesuai dengan mode visual yang ditampilkan. Karena slogan yang diterjemahkan tidak sesuai dengan mode visual yang ditampilkan, maka makna slogan tidak tersampaikan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana penggunaan berbagai mode (teks dan gambar) mempengaruhi proses penerjemahan slogan di SDN Pekayon Jaya 2. Analisis multimodal dapat membantu membuka apakah terjemahan dapat menjangkau dan berkomunikasi dengan audiens bahasa target. Dan analisis multimodal membantu sejauh mana terjemahan mencapai dampak emosional yang diinginkan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari enam slogan yang ditampilkan, empat di antaranya memiliki mode visual yang sesuai dengan pesan yang ingin mereka sampaikan, sementara dua lainnya tidak konsisten. Analisis multimodal menunjukkan bahwa ketika mode visual cocok dengan slogan, simbol yang digunakan juga konsisten secara semiotik. Namun, ditemukan bahwa ada beberapa terjemahan yang tidak sepenuhnya sesuai dengan maksud slogan. Slogan-slogan tersebut mencoba merefleksikan kaitan antara pendidikan dan pandangan Islam, penekanan pentingnya ilmu pengetahuan, moralitas, akhlak, kesuksesan dunia dan akhirat, serta nilai-nilai seperti toleransi, keadilan, dan kebajikan dalam konteks pendidikan yang berbasis Islam.

Abstract

Meningkatkan nilai-nilai adab dan akhlak Islami pada anak merupakan tantangan yang penting di era modern. Buku cerita anak Muslim, seperti Seri Cerita Sebelum Tidur: Adab dan Akhlak Anak Muslim, menjadi salah satu media yang efektif untuk tujuan tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tindak tutur dalam percakapan buku ini, dengan fokus pada bentuk, fungsi, dan nilai yang terkandung. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan analisis tindak tutur berdasarkan teori Austin dan Searle. Data berupa percakapan dalam buku dianalisis untuk mengidentifikasi bentuk tindak tutur (lokusi, ilokusi, perlokusi) dan fungsi ilokusi dominan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa percakapan dalam buku ini mengandung berbagai bentuk tindak tutur, yang sebagian besar berfungsi secara informasional, persuasif, dan komunikatif. Percakapan tersebut dirancang untuk menyampaikan pesan moral dan agama dengan cara yang sederhana dan mudah dipahami oleh anak-anak. Nilai-nilai Islami seperti kesopanan, hormat, dan kepatuhan terhadap ajaran agama secara konsisten diperkenalkan melalui dialog yang penuh rasa saying kepada anak. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa buku cerita anak muslim berfungsi sebagai media yang efektif dalam menanamkan adab dan akhlak Islami pada anak-anak. Percakapan yang terdapat dalam buku ini bukan hanya sekadar alat komunikasi, tetapi juga menjadi sarana edukasi yang menyenangkan dan bermakna dalam memperkenalkan nilai-nilai moral sejak dini.
