Abstract

Profile of Angular Cheilitis in HIV/AIDS Patients at UPIPI RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya 2014. For over twenty years, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have become a significant public health concern, and the epidemic continues to challenge humanity. HIV related oral lesions can be used as markers of the immune status. Angular Cheilitis (AC) which is one of the seven oral manifestations which are strongly associated with HIV Infection, has been identified and internationally calibrated. The purpose of this research is to identify the Angular Cheilitis and its association with reduced Cluster of Differentiation 4 (CD4+) count in HIV/AIDS patients at Unit Perawatan Intermediet Penyakit Infeksi (UPIPI) RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. This was an Analytic observasional research with cross-sectional and total sampling method. The samples consisted of 88 HIV/AIDS patients treated in UPIPI RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya from July to August 2014. The Diagnosis of Angular Cheilitis was based on clinical appearance; the oral cavities of the research subjects were examined by dentists specialized in Oral Medicine. CD4+ counts were obtained from the patient’s medical record. Eighty Eight HIV/AIDS patients were examined and there were 120 cases of oral manifestation. There were 31 cases of Angular Cheilitis (25,83%). Angular Cheilitis was found to be significantly correlated to the decrease in CD4+ cell count below 200 cells/mm3 (P< -,245). Risk Relative anaylsis concludes that HIV/AIDS patients with Candidiasis Oral 7.5 more often suffer from AC. There is a correlation between AC and OC (p<0,357). Angular Cheilitis may be used as an alternative to predict CD4+ count at field-based settings to diagnose the immunocompromised status of HIV-infected individuals.

Abstract

Background: Maxillary canines play a critical point in creating an aesthetic smile as they support the part of facial muscle. Canines are also the second most frequently impacted teeth after the third molars. In some cases, it is possible to retract canines into their correct position by orthodontics treatment. Purpose: This article highlighted a treatment option with surgical exposure, in which a maxillary canine was impacted. It presented gradual steps from pre-surgical to post-surgical orthodontic treatment. Case: A 16 years old female patient referred to Orthodontic Department by Oral Surgeon for pre-surgical orthodontic treatment of her impacted maxillary canine. Case Management: After pre-surgical orthodontic treatment, the impacted canine was surgically exposed by closed technique since open surgical exposure might need excessive removal of the surrounding bone. Traction was given through a gold chain which attached to the palatal surface of the impacted canine. The tooth was ideally positioned with fixed orthodontic appliances. The permanent right maxillary canine was successfully positioned into proper alignment with the remaining teeth. Aesthetic smile was improved. Conclusion: Malocclusion with impacted canine was successfully treated with MBT orthodontic prescription combined with gold chain that can retract the impacted canine into its physiological position and the patient was satisfied with the aesthetic result.

Abstract

Background: Mumps virus (MuV) can trigger severe infections, such as parotitis, epididymo-orchitis, and meningitis. The effectiveness of MuV vaccine administration has been proven, but current outbreaks warrant the development of antivirals against MuV. Zingiber officinale var. Roscoe or ginger is often used as an alternative remedy. Currently, there are no known in vitro or in vivo studies that investigate ginger as an MuV antiviral. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the antiviral potency of the bioactive compounds in Zingiber officinale var. Roscoe against MuV. Methods: Antiviral activity screening was conducted by druglikeness analysis, antiviral probability, molecular docking, and molecular dynamic simulation. Results: As an antiviral, 6-shogaol from Zingiber officinale var. Roscoe has potency against MuV. It has a good binding affinity and can establish interactions with the binding domain of the target protein by forming hydrogen, Van der Waals, and alkyl bonds. Conclusion: The complex of 6-shogaol_NP was predicted to be volatile but stable for triggering inhibitory activity. However, these results must be proved by in vivo and in vitro approaches to strengthen the scientific evidence.

Abstract

Noni fruit (M. citrifolia L.) is a medicinal plant known for its antioxidant bioactive compounds, which have potential use as radiation protection agents. Despite their traditional use, the specific bioactive compounds and their efficacy as radiation protectants have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to address this research gap by evaluating the potential of noni fruit extract as a candidate for radiation protection using in-silico methods. Databases consulted include PubChem, PASS Online, and ProTox-II. The results identified nine bioactive compounds in noni fruit extract: quercetin, kaempferol, morindin, morindone, alizarin, nicotinamide, beta-sitosterol, squalene, and n-hexadecanoic acid. Among these, kaempferol, squalene, and n-hexadecanoic acid were found to be the most potent antioxidants. Kaempferol exhibited a low toxicity level (grade 5) with significant activity as an antioxidant (Pa ≥ 0.7), free radical scavenger (Pa ≥ 0.7), and radioprotector (Pa 0.3 – 0.7). Squalene, a triterpene with low toxicity (class 5), showed antioxidant activity (Pa 0.3 – 0.7), free radical scavenger activity (Pa 0.3 – 0.7), and radioprotection (Pa 0.3 – 0.7). n-Hexadecanoic acid, a metabolite with moderate toxicity (class 4), demonstrated lower antioxidant activity (Pa ≤ 0.3), while morindin exhibited free radical scavenging and radioprotective properties. The findings suggest that kaempferol, squalene, and n-hexadecanoic acid in noni fruit extract hold promise as candidates for radiation protection, as evidenced by in-silico analysis.

Abstract

Produced by a stingless bee (Tetragonula biroi) from Sulawesi Island, propolis is an active compound that requires further studies to determine its herbal-based medicinal applications. In addition, propolis is well known as a potential natural ingredient for herbal medicine with minimal side effects. The stingless honeybee, native to Sulawesi, produces propolis, a resin. Propolis from Trigona stingless bees in Sulawesi has the highest flavonoid content compared to Apis mellifera bees. Flavonoids are the most common compounds contained in propolis. Propolis from stingless bees may have the potential to stimulate osteoblast cell proliferation and be responsible for bone regeneration. The objective of this study is to investigate the viability of the 7F2 pre-osteoblast cell line after administration of the stingless bee’s 1% propolis nanoemulsion extract (PNE). A 1% PNE was formulated by maceration methods and diluted into several concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, 1.56%, and 0.78%. A particle size analysis was done to examine the particle size and zeta potential of the 1% PNE. A Tetrazolium Technique assay was carried out to examine 1% PNE application on a 7F2 pre-osteoblast cell line on days 1, 3, and 7. The highest viability of 7F2 pre-osteoblast cells was at 0.78% concentration on day 7, and the lowest viability was observed at 100% concentration on day 1, with significant differences among groups (p < 0.05). A 1% PNE with a particle size of 151.28 to 182.2 nm and a zeta potential of −32.76 mV was successfully formulated. The 1% PNE was non-toxic to 7F2 pre-osteoblast cells, with a cell toxicity limit at a concentration of 1.56%.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is the most common dental and oral health condition. Children's growth and development may be hampered by dental cavities. Furthermore, it may raise the risk of stunting owing to a lack of dietary intake, which may have an impact on quality of life. Oral and dental health empowerment is required to increase dental health knowledge and understanding of dental disorders, particularly during the corona virus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic. Objective: to describe oral and dental health knowledge improved following dental health empowerment at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Miftahul Ulum Elementary School in Melirang, Bungah Distric, Gresik City, East Java. Material and Methods: Three surveyors were responsible for data collecting. This study's sample size was 150 people ranging from fourth to sixth grade. The seminar covered dental and oral health and was provided via teledentistry. The participants were asked to fill out a Google form for the pre- and post-test to determine the improvement of oral and dental health knowledge for the dental health empowerment evaluation. Result: The majority of oral and dental health participants understood the presentation on oral and dental health empowerment. The post-test percentage was higher (93.59%) than the pre-test rate (56.81%). Conclusion: The program findings demonstrated that oral and dental health empowerment via teledentistry was an effective medium for increasing elementary school children's understanding of dental and oral health status.

Abstract

Background: The elementary school period is a golden age for instilling the values of clean and healthy living behaviour (CHLB) and has the potential as an agent of change to promote CHLB in schools, families and communities so as to create quality human resources in the future. Currently children are very vulnerable to dental and oral health, because at that age there is a transition or change of teeth, namely from deciduous teeth to permanent teeth, for that special attention needs to be given to dental and oral health so that the growth and development of teeth can be maintained properly. Purpose: to enhance knowledge of CHLB and screening of dental malocclusion in an effort to improve the quality of life related to dental and oral health. Methods: 116 participants from grades 3-5 elementary school students. Data was collected by means of intraoral examination and filling out pre-test and post-tests questionnaires. Furthermore, an analysis of the frequency distribution data was carried out by mean of statistical analysis. Results: male students had higher caries (59 people) and those who were not caries (4 people), compared to girls (47 people) and those who were not caries (6 people). CHLB knowledge level is good (86.8%), moderate (8.2) low (5%). Conclusion: caries in boys is higher than in girls and all respondents' knowledge of CHLB is good.

Abstract

 Background: Peri-implantitis is one of many factors that can cause implant failure, with common cases ranging from 1%-47% and the highest incidence ranging from 10.7%- 47.2%. Mechanical debridement (MD) is currently the standard for peri-implantitis treatment. However, MD has limitations in the removal of infected tissue. Moreover, the rough texture of the implant's surface and bacteria adhesion and colonization increases the difficulty in performing MD. To overcome these limitations, adjunct therapy is needed to increase peri-implantitis treatment effectiveness. One of those adjunct therapies, photodynamic therapy (PDT), is used to destroy bacterial cells and significantly reduce inflammatory cell infiltration around the implant. Purpose: To describe the effectiveness of PDT as an adjunct therapy to MD in periimplantitis treatment through narrative review. Review: PDT is effective in reducing the number of bacteria, plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), crestal bone loss (CBL), and excessive proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α) in patients. However, the effectiveness of PDT can be influenced by several factors, including patients' conditions, such as diabetes and smoking habits, types of photosensitizers used, and exposure time. Conclusion: PDT is an effective adjunctive therapy to MD in peri-implantitis treatment since it can improve clinical parameter values, significantly reduce P. gingivalis, and decrease proinflammatory cytokines.

Abstract

Background:  Nutritional insufficiency and stunting during infant growth and development also causes a delay in the ossification centers and may lead to poor skeletal and dental forms resulted in malocclusion. Early interceptive orthodontics can eliminate or reduce the severity of a developing malocclusion, the complexity of orthodontic treatment, the overall treatment time, and the cost. Proper oral and dental health knowledge and a favorable attitude toward oral and dental health are critical in preventing numerous dental issues such as malocclusion. Purpose: the aim of this community empowerment is to enhance the knowledge of preventive orthodontic treatment for malocclusion and stunting in elementary school children. Methods:  The data was collected at Miftahul Ulum Melirang's Madrasah Ibtidaiyah, or elementary school, in Melirang Village, Bungah District, Gresik, East Java. For the community empowerment program assessment, participants were requested to fill out a Google form for the pre- and post-test to identify the enhancement of knowledge about or preventative orthodontic treatment for malocclusion and stunting in primary school children. Results: The majority of the community empowerment participants understood the presentation on oral and dental health empowerment. The post-test percentage was greater (91.5%) than the pre-test rate (53.75%). Conclusion:  The dental and oral health empowerment program about preventive orthodontics, malocclusion, and stunting was effectively completed, enhancing the knowledge level of elementary school children.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is frequently observed in children. Increasing the awareness of oral health among school-age children is anticipated to decrease the occurrence of dental caries. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dental caries among students in Medowo III elementary school using dmft/DMFT index. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out among the entire student at Medowo III elementary school. The dental caries of each student were assessed using the dmft and DMFT indices. The assessment of variable distribution was conducted using the Shapiro-Wilk test. The dmft/DMFT values were compared between different age groups and genders using either the Student's t-test or the Mann-Whitney test. The data was processed using a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The study included a total of 43 students. The average caries index in primary dentitions was markedly greater than in permanent dentitions. According to WHO, the prevalence of dental caries was very high in the primary dentition of students aged 7-9 years. No notable disparities were detected between female and male students in relation to the caries index of both primary and permanent teeth. However, the average caries index of primary teeth was considerably higher in middle-childhood students compared to preadolescence students. Conclusion: The dental caries prevalence among students in Medowo III elementary school were still high. Therefore, oral health prevention program was needed in order to enhance the community's awareness toward dental caries.
