Abstract

The human nervous system consists of two parts, namely the spine and the brain. The brain itself consists of the brain stem and cerebral cortex, consisting of the right and left hemispheres. Each hemisphere is divided into four lobes: the frontal lobe, occipital lobe, temporal lobe, and parietal lobe, where each lobe has its function—the brain experiences both growth regarding its parts and mass or weight. The left and right hemispheres have their respective roles or functions, leading to a tendency to use hemispheres. The left hemisphere is more dominantly responsible for language, logical and analytical matters. At the same time, the right hemisphere is more intuitive and imaginative. Concerning producing speech, the brain has a part called the Broca region. Then there is the Wernicke area which is responsible for speech comprehension. These two regions will work together for language processing in the brain. Besides, there is a system related to the workings of emotions in humans called the limbic system in the brain.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the language choice of Indonesian ethnic Javanese, especially of the Brang Kidul of Ponoragan; based on the distinguishing vocabulary and intonation in the narrative. “Ponorogo Brang Kidul” is the designation for the southern part of Ponorogo Regency of the East Java Province. Employing qualitative research method, sociolinguistic approach, and research communication model, this research was conducted in the higher education community toward three respondents who are native Ponoragan Javanese speakers. The research data were obtained from recorded dialogues of speakers in four speech contexts between students and lecturers and between fellow students. The language code selection patterns found were Bahasa Jawa (BJ), Bahasa Jawa Ponoragan (BJP), Bahasa Arab (BA), and Bahasa Indonesia (BI) which would had been considered mainly based on situations, age, and social status. The BJP vocabularies frequently found in the Brang Kidul dialect were "alah mendah", "ritek", "byungalaah", "angkan", "gor", "ale", "klawus", "dipadoni", and "kesit". Finally, found that factors influencing the choice of language in this study were the interlocutors and the topic of conversation as well as the intonation in the speech of the different speakers, namely the rising tone at the beginning of the speech and falling at the end.

Abstract

Background. Language plays a fundamental role in shaping and reflecting identity, particularly in multicultural societies where diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds intersect. The relationship between language, identity, and ideology is complex, as discourse both constructs and reflects social realities, power dynamics, and cultural values. Understanding how language operates in such contexts is crucial for exploring how ideologies are communicated and contested. Purpose. This study aims to examine the interplay between language, identity, and ideology in multicultural societies through a sociolinguistic analysis of discourse. It seeks to understand how language is used to construct social identities, negotiate cultural differences, and reinforce or challenge dominant ideologies within diverse communities. Method. A qualitative sociolinguistic approach is employed, using discourse analysis to examine a range of spoken and written texts from multicultural settings. Data sources include media, political speeches, and everyday conversations. The analysis focuses on how linguistic choices reflect identity construction and ideological positioning. Results. The findings reveal that language is a powerful tool for constructing social identities, with speakers strategically using linguistic features to align themselves with particular cultural or political groups. Ideological discourses are often reinforced through language, but also provide spaces for resistance and the negotiation of power relations. Conclusion. This study demonstrates the significant role of language in shaping identity and ideology in multicultural societies, highlighting the need for continued research into how language practices contribute to social dynamics and political discourse.
