Abstract

Ceramics Handmade in Jakarta currently has become a new hype. With hand- made ceramics people having a direct connection with the makers by how those things made. Techniques, materials, and the process are the reasons why people are more attracted to get involved by making their ceramics by themselves. The hype caused high demand of ceramic basic techniques information, but people barely find ceramic books or other types of media which commissioned and developed by the actual condition of Indonesia’s independent ceramics studio especially Jakarta. This study structured through Instructional System Design (ISD) by two main cores. The first is to formulate a mapping method to classify the information of ceramics techniques at a different level. The intention is to gather specific information for beginners that would apply on instructional media. The second is designing a media such as conventional books and virtual information video through the augmented book. The result construct augmented book with systematically measurable information. It provides people easy access information and offered a new learning experience by using the augmented book.

Abstract

Tatang Suhenra adalah salah seorang komikus legendaris Indonesia yangterkenal dengan karya komiknya berupa komik silat, komik cerita Punakawan,dan komik religius. Komik-komik karya Tatang Suhenra menjadi benda koleksiyang bernilai tinggi karena dapat terus dikonsumsi saat komik Indonesia sulitbersaing pada periode 1980-an menjadi daya tarik utama yang menarik untukdikaji lebih dalam. Aspek visual story telling komik Tatang Suhenra dikajimenggunakan teori Scott McCloud. Adapun hasil penelitian ini mengerucut pada pemanfaatan konten dan konteks lokal secara kreatif dari target pembacanya sebagai salah satu ciri kekhasan karya Tatang Suhenra selain pemilihan tokoh serta penokohan yang teliti dan konsisten. Hasil penelitian ini dapat digunakan sebagai acuan pembuat komik untuk mengatasi persaingan komik Indonesia dengan komik mancanegara

Abstract

The invasion of Japanese pop culture since 1990's influences contemporary visual art and design development especially comics in Indonesia. Popularity of Japanese comic or manga incites Indonesia's comics that adapting Japanese manga visual style. One of Indonesia's comic which influence by manga is Garudayana. Garudayana adopt storyplot and manga-esque style; however Garudayana still elaborates wayang storyplot from Indonesian tradition, but in different perspective. The creator elaborates wayang purwa, the prequel story of Mahabharata, the ingeneous wayang storyplot. Is Yuniarto the Garudayana creator compose manga-esque style with wayang purwa setting, and redesign the custom wayang character.This study aims to develop understandings the creative processes and production stages, especially in characters' design. The study used observation towards published Garudayana comic series,in depth interview with the creator, and literature studies on wayang and character design theories. The study finding the strong points of Garudayana based on creator's understanding of manga , his ability to combine, and adapt in elaborating cultural content wayang purwa storyline.

Abstract

Pokémon is one of worldwide famous franchise content from Nintendo which released as game in 1996. The game series of Pokémon later massively developed into various entertainment content and media with wide range of merchandising. The basic content of Pokémon is character exploration in a set of world with emphasizing the relationship between Pokémon and its trainers. There are more than 600 Pokémon characters introduced to the public until 2012. The wide numbers of characters are developed in order to embrace the wide variety of audience's interests which are basically developed from imagination of animals and plants around the world. This study is developing understand on the real Pokémon character's point of visual interest through visual structure analysis based on character design theory. The 5th generation of Pokémon characters is the study object. The result of this study shows that combination of forms and colors which emphasize cute features are the basic ingredients of Pokémon character design. Those are the key visual elements of Pokémon's character design which gain audience's interest.

Abstract

Hipster logo is popular through online interaction among designers. The theme hipster which refers to modernizing old stuffs is becoming a trending logo design style in 2012. Through structural analysis on 12 confirmed logos as hipster logo, this study will depict the significant graphic elements of hipster logo. This study is conducted to identify what makes a logo called hipster logo. This study will also explain the reasons of certain graphic elements works as iconic visual elements of hipster logo. Through structural analysis, this study finds that circular shape, X symbol or X composition of icons, monogram colors, and sans serif type lettermarks are the basic ingredients in making hipster logo. Those graphic elements then added with certain icons such as triangle, 'estimated' or similar texts, and several images which represent activities or things in 1800s will create a perfect hipster logo. But in the end, it is not the trend or style hype which makes a logo will be remembered, but the shared value between company and its logo is.

Abstract

Advertising billboards is outdoor media conventional, but currently there are phenomena advertising by utilizing wall house or store in a public hall in town. Utilization wall as advertisement media is approach alternative against outdoor advertising at the research is done. The purpose of this research is to know about development advertising wall painting based on characteristic and strategies the visuals on the media. Method research used writer is descriptive analysis in finding and develop object research with the adoption of data via process interview observation and a questionnaire interview structure. Parameters research reviewed based on aspects characteristic visual contained in object radiotelegraphy; tataletak, color, logo, typography, texture, and graphics groundswell. Aspect strategy visual radiotelegraphy; visualization coquet; attached in memory, strengthen trust, maintain attention, and form Attached in memory, strengthen trust, maintain attention, and forming association. Characteristic of visual and strategy visual advertising wall painting show the form visualizations simple. Logo and color is most important element make advertising now that can work effective. Notch advertising wall painting in the series of processes of communication advertising is as an advertisement amplifier and reminder that becomes a fastener of the series a promotion is there.

Abstract

In Yogyakarta form of humor in communicating called the (language) plesetan. Interesting phenomenon occurs when plesetan that was originally a lingua franca is then used as an advertising concept culinary business. Actors’ culinary business with the help of graphic design utilizing digital printing technology in producing a media campaign with the concept of a plesetan. The research methods used in this study play purely descriptive phenomenology methodology pioneered by Edmund Husserl. Data was collected through field observations by documenting the work of the media campaign culinary business in Yogyakarta and surrounding areas. Interviews were conducted to reveal the informant lived experience of a first person perspective. With this method are expected to be found in the explanation of the concept of Javanese plesetan culture. Then also sought various forms of plesetan in the media and the promotion of outdoor culinary business in Yogyakarta. From the initial observations that have been made assumed plesetan performed by the high level of culinary competition. Found an interesting proof of the theory that good plesetan will continue spoofed.

Abstract

There society requires an adequate understanding of disaster risk in order to react appropriately to save themselves. The role of disaster media socialization as one source of information is an important element in disaster management. Understanding disaster media socialization reflects community level preparedness in an area. This research is the study of visual literacy measured to evaluate the tsunami socialization media given to the coastal districts of Bantul, Yogyakarta. From the research facts about the level of literacy communities are affected by the social and cultural environment. Based on the results the easy disaster media needed to be found in relation to daily in order to foster disaster preparedness.

Abstract

Vihara Satya Budhi merupakan salah satu peninggalan artefak budaya Cina yang memiliki bentuk arsitektur Cina . Sistem Hongshui dan konsep YinYang merupakan kunci dalam membangun tempat ibadat. Naga yang merupakan ornamen terpenting dalam klenteng memiliki kedudukan yang tinggi, bahkan posisi naga pada atap menjadi identitas bangunan Cina, karena memberikan makna bahwa bangunan tersebut merupakan bangunan penting, seperti istana dan kuil peribadatan. Kedudukan dan posisi naga pada kuil peribadatan merupakan satu hal yang menarik untuk diteliti. Penelitian ini mencoba melihat bentuk naga yang ada pada Vihara Satya Budhi, Bandung melalui telaah historis dan budaya untuk mencari dan untuk mengetahui kedudukan simbol dan makna bentuk naga yang ada pada Vihara Satya Budhi. Adanya migrasi masyarakat Cina ke Indonesia turut memberikan pengaruh dan perubahan pada visualisasi naga, namun hal ini tidak berdampak kepada bangunan klenteng yang tetap berpegang teguh pada ketentuan yang telah ditetapkan oleh leluhur bangsa Cina. Naga merupakan simbol kekuasaan karena sejak dulu sudah disamakan dengan kedudukan kaisar. Selain kekuasaaan, naga juga merupakan simbol kebaikan dan keberuntungan. Temuan penelitian ini adalah kedudukan naga pada atap bangunan klenteng merupakan simbol identitas dari bangunan peribadatan Cina. Selain pada atap posisi naga pada tiang merupakan bentuk yang sering dijumpai. Hal ini merupakan gambaran bahwa masyarakat Cina diharapkan tidak melupakan kebudayaan leluhur. Dan posisi naga pada tempat dupa juga memiliki arti bahwa naga sebagai pemberi keberuntungan kepada umat manusia patut disembah.

Abstract

Nowadays, the integrations between Western principles of visual art with principles of Feng Shui in logo designs can easily be found in Indonesia. Principles of Feng Shui, often called as Feng Sui or Hong Sui, is an ancient Chinese way of thinking that emphasize in environment organization. Principles of Feng Shui's four key points are to produce a positive Qi energy, to maintain stability among Yin and Yang, to produce a productive cycle Wu Xing (Five Elements), and to represent the symbolism from Chinese culture. The purpose of this research is to establish an understanding on the relationship between Western principles of visual art and principles of Feng Shui in logo designs, like the similarities on the way of reading logo as well as the differences. Logo designs were analyzed, described, and explained using Western principles of visual art and principles of Feng Shui's four key points into three sections, which are visual elements, logo composition, and logo interpretation. This research used the qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The data were collected through several methods, such as interviews and literature reviews. The four stages of analysis procedure are description, formal analysis, interpretation, and evaluation or judgement. Upon completion, there are three findings. First, the way of reading a logo design using the Western principles of visual art is simpler and straightforward than the principles of Feng Shui. Second, several relationships among the two principles were found in visual elements, logo composition, and logo interpretation. Third, the integrations between Western principles of visual art with principles of Feng Shui in a logo design represents its ideologies as well as the 'shield' to protect the company from any harm.
