Abstract

Poetry is a literary work that has existed since long time ago. There are many types of poetry in Japanese Literature, namely, tanka, haiku, shi, kashi, and another. In this thesis, the type of Japanese poem, haiku and shi have similarity. Both of them have similarity in using natural symbols, but they have different meanings. The purpose of this thesis are to determine the meaning of haiku and shi, and also the meaning of the natural symbols in those poems. The methods that are used to analyze the meaning of the natural symbols in the poem are structural method and semiotic method. Structural method is used to analyze the structure of the physical poem and inner structure poem. Analysis of the physical structure consists of diction, imagery, concrete word, and the figure of speech. Analysis of the inner structure consists of theme, tone, atmosphere, feel, and message. This structural method is used to determine the meaning of the whole poem. Semiotic method is used to determine the meaning of the natural symbols in poem. Natural symbols consist of phenomenon of plant, animal phenomenon, phenomenon of water, air phenomenon, phenomenon of soil and other natural symbols. Results of this thesis explain that haiku describes the implicit meaning of the circumstances at the time of the Edo period. Shi explains the feelings of the author. In addition, there are twenty natural symbols that contain in haiku and shi. There are six symbols of the plant phenomena, five animal phenomena, three water phenomena, an air phenomenon, two soil phenomena, and three another natural phenomena. All symbols have different meanings.

Abstract

The sequence of this thesis are: first the writer collects the references and analyzes the data. Then, she obtained the data from Anthology of Japanese children's literature's book. The problems that will be studied in this thesis are intrinsic, extrinsic elements and the moral values contained in Sato Shinyuu Koyo's short story. This study uses structural method. The method is used to analyze the intrinsic and extrinsic elements that lead to moral values of the story. It makes the writer easier to analyze the moral values of story. The intrinsic elements that will be discussed in this thesis are theme, character, plot, setting, point of view, and the message of story. And the extrinsic elements that will be analyzed is the author's environment.

Abstract

Poetry usually contains the expression of feeling and criticism poet of social life and society in a certain era. Every word in the poem implies that the author’s expression so that the meaning contained in the poem needs to be analyzed to determine the content of the poem. Furthermore in choosing the choice of words (diction) must be precise so that the meaning and the imagine was pointed. In poetry usually tucked the message author to the reader (moral message). One method that can be used in analyzing poetry is to use the symbol analysis, heuristic, and hermeneutic. Symbol analysis is divided into three, namely blank symbol, natural symbol, and private symbol. Blank symbol is a word that expresses certain symbol whose meaning is universal reference so that reader had no trouble interpreting. Natural symbol are words that reveal the reality of nature as a symbol of life projections. Private symbol are words that reveal the symbol specially created and used the poet to express uniqueness. Heuristic is based on the reading of linguistic or semiotic structure is based on the first level convention semiotic system (naturalized poetic language into ordinary language). Meanwhile, hermeneutic means reading poetry at the second level of language (the meaning of the poetry uses literary). The poetry that will be analyzed is haiku (Japanese poem with seventeen syllable with a 5-7-5 pattern) in the Japanese Art and Poetry book. Selected poetry is poetry with the theme of winter. While the result is there are seven blank symbol, seven natural symbol, and two private symbol. Meanwhile, heuristic and hermeneutic majority describe sadness, loneliness, and suffering the author at the time of this haiku made (Edo era).
