Abstract

Elderly people are particularly vulnerable to oral disease. Decreased function of the body can affect the aging process of the organic, and anorganic content in the elderly. The aim of this study was to determine the content of organic elements (total protein level), volume and pH of saliva in the elderly. This descriptive observational study with crosssectional design was performed in Tresna Werdha Gau Mabaji Social Institution, Gowa (n=30)with a simple random sampling technique using 30% of the total population and in Werdha Theodora Makassar nursing home with saturated sampling technique (n = 13). Anorganic contents were measured using spectophotometric and organic content of the total protein level of saliva was measured using an autoanalyzer tool kyltec in BPTP Laboratory Maros. Statistical analysis was performed with t-test using SPSS version 16. There were no significant differences between the anorganic (Ca2+,Mg2+, and phosphate) and organic elements content of saliva (total protein level), the volume of saliva and salivary pH in the elderly by sex and age groups. Yet, there are significant differences in the volume of saliva of elderly who consume drugs for systemic diseases. It is concluded that gender and age do not affect the anorganic (Ca,and phosphate)and organic element content of saliva (total protein content), the volume of saliva, and saliva pH in the elderly. Drugs consumed for systemic diseases does not affect the anorganic and organic element content of saliva and the pH of saliva in the elderly.

Questionnaire of modified dental anxiety scale (MDAS) have been translated into various languages such as Spain,Greece, China, Romania, Turkey and Malaysia. However, no study has tested the reliability and validity of the MDAsin the Indonesian version, so it can be used effectively to assess dental anxiety among Indonesian population. Thisstudy aimed to determine the reliability and validity of the Indonesian version of MDAs. Analytic observational studywith cross sectional study was conducted in a patient population Dental Hospital Hasanuddin University that will beextracted, filled and scalled, with purposive sampling technique. Realibility of dental anxiety level was tested withCronbach's alpha test, the provision is acceptable if the value is >0.6.Using product moment correlation test, validity isaccepted if the value is >0.3. Results showed the questionnaire MDAS in Indonesian version has good internalconsistency with the value of 0.862, and a valid value (0.706). Based on the characteristics of the respondents, only agesignificantly affects anxiety level difference. It was concluded that the MDAS in Indonesian version has good reliability and validity.

Abstract

In the daily work, dentists are required to performprecision in relatively small treatment areas, inside the mouth. We oftenfind a dentist who does his work with an awkward position in a relatively long time. Musculoskeletal disorders oftenoccur as a result of less ergonomic body position while working which occurs for a long time and repeatedly. The aim ofthis descriptive observational study was to determine the application of ergonomic posture by Hasanuddin Universityclinical dental student during treatment procedures. The ergonomic posture during treatment measures assessed by directobservation on 78 clinical students of Faculty of Dentistry using test of visual perception (TVP) which consists of 8 items. This study showed that the most ergonomic posture often overlooked when performing treatment procedures is backposition performed by 51 respondents (65.4%). Positioning the feet in such a way that the angle between the thigh and calf form the angle of 110º or more is the most rarely overlooked, just 19 respondents (24.4%). In this study, 39respondents (50%)were categorized as sufficient, which means50% of ergonomic stance/posture has been applied. It wasconcluded that ergonomic posture applied by clinical dental students of Hasanuddin University during treatmentprocedure was categorized as adequate.

Abstract

Objective : Gingival pigmentation (changes of the gingival color) from brown to black discoloration may occur due to exogenous and endogenous factor. Increased concentration of heavy metal in the blood has been known to be one of the exogenous factors that could lead to gingival pigmentation. Nuha is a sub-district in South Sulawesi which soil contains high concentration of nickel and other heavy metals. Heavy metal contaminations in the water, soil, or air have detrimental effects on human health, particularly the oral cavity.Material and Methods : This study proposed to determine the association between duration of residence with gingival pigmentation to the community of Nuha District of East Luwu society. This study was a descriptive observational with cross-sectional study design. Results : The population in this study was all of the Nuha residents. The sampling technique used was simple two-stage cluster sampling. Gingival pigmentation in this study was measured using Dummet Oral Pigmentation Index (DOPI).Conclusion : The data obtained showed significant association between duration of residence with maxillar and mandibular gingival pigmentation in the residents of Nuha District of Luwu Timur. p-value for maxillar DOPI was 0.003 and for mandibular DOPI was 0.000.
