Abstract

Abstract

Background: Education is one of the largest and most complex social sectors that have been negatively affected by Covid-19, which has led to subsequent changes in modes of learning and teaching in many universities around the world by introducing e-learning platforms. This online learning method has also been carried out by Hasanuddin University through the SIKOLA. Objective: To determine students’ perceptions regarding the computer-based test (CBT) through the SIKOLA learning plat-form during COVID-19 pandemic. Method: This analytic observational study was design as cross-sectional, using students of Hasanuddin University Faculty of Dentistry as population, which were divided by gender and educational stages. Respon-dents filled out online questionnaires consisting of 6 variables, namely pedagogy, validity, reliability, affective factors, effi-ciency, and safety. Data collected were in a form of Likert scale and then analyzed with t-test using SPSS. Result: There was a significant difference in perception between preclinical and clinical students on the pedagogical and efficiency variables (p<0.005). Based on the educational stage, significant differences were only seen in the pedagogical and efficiency aspects. Conclusion: Student perceptions related to CBT exams through SIKOLA learning have good perceptions, seen from the majority of respondents who agree on the pedagogical aspects, validity, reliability, affective factors, efficiency and safety.

Abstract

Background: Bruxism is related to sleep, along with increased anxiety and stress during sleep and poor sleep quality is the main reason. Smartphones have become an integral part of university students' lives, especially in academic and social activities. However, smartphone use at night can inhibit melatonin production due to blue light exposure, potentially increasing the incidence of bruxism. Objective: to determine the relationship between sleep quality and smartphone use on the incidence of bruxism in clerkship students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Hasanuddin University. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with a total of 103 clerkship students. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Smartphone use using self-reported Questionnaire and Bruxism was measured using self-reported Questionnaire and observation of people around. Data analysis using SPSS ver. 26. Results: there is a significant relationship between sleep quality and the incidence of bruxism (p=0.041) and smartphone use on the incidence of bruxism (p=0.043). Conclusion: sleep quality and smartphone use are associated with bruxism.

Abstract

To analyze the validity of maternal and child perceptions regarding the oral health status of 5- and 6-year-old children at Raja-wali Catholic Kindergarten in Makassar, a cross-sectional study with an analytic observational design was conducted. Data were collected through questionnaires (for mothers), interviews using facial expression cards (for children), and clinical exami-nations. The results showed a prevalence of early childhood caries (ECC) of 62.5%, with 34.6% of children presenting at least one instance of untreated caries-related complication. Mothers and children have a fair agreement regarding the child’s oral health (ICC=0.327). Maternal perception demonstrated a stronger correlation with clinical findings (r=0.692 for dmft; r=0.511 for pufa) compared to the child’s perception (r=0.290 and r=0.229, respectively). The area under the curve for maternal perception of treatment need reached 0.851 (dmft) and 0.789 (pufa), with the highest sensitivity recorded at 86.1% and specificity at 97.5%.

Abstract

Dairy products are known for their non-cariogenic properties and have even been reported to inhibit the attachment of cariogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus spp. on dental plaque. Dangke, a traditional dairy product from Enrekang, South Sulawesi, with a high protein content of up to 17.20%, dangke is considered a non-cariogenic food. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro efficacy of Dangke in reducing Streptococcus levels in dental plaque. The evaluation of Dangke implicates the use of traditional dairy products in oral health. This quasi-experimental study used a post-test-only control-group design with 15 subjects selected via simple random sampling. Subjects were divided into two groups: a treatment group that consumed Dangke and a control group that consumed cheddar cheese. Plaque samples were collected twice from each subject—immediately after consumption (T1) and two hours later (T2)—resulting in 30 samples per group. The Streptococcus colony counts were analyzed at the Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Hasanuddin University. At T1, the mean colony counts were 19.44 CFU/mL for the Dangke group and 31.56 CFU/mL for the Cheddar group. At T2, the counts were 2.44 and 27.56 CFU/mL, respectively. A statistically significant reduction was observed in the Dangke group (p = 0.028), while no significant change was seen in the Cheddar group (p = 0.746). Dangke demonstrated a significant antimicrobial effect against Streptococcus in dental plaque and may serve as a natural cariostatic agent, providing new insights into the potential of local food products for caries prevention.
