Abstract

Sirah Nabawiyyah has an important position in the viewpoint of Indonesian Muslim scholars, unfortunately specific works of the Prophet biography are rarely found in Indonesia. As a well-known interpreter of the Qur'an, M. Quraish Shihab has a historiographical work entitled Membaca Sirah Nabi Muhammad Saw dalam Sorotan al-Qur’an dan Hadis-Hadis Shahih that discusses critically about the figure of the Prophet. This library research with historical method analyzes the background of writing, sources of writing, and historical explanations contained in his work. Finally it was concluded that the book was written in accordance with the need of Indonesian Muslims to discuss the history of the Prophet Muhammad critically. The references consist of the Qur'an, the Prophet traditions, the books of Sirah Nabawiyyah, and other relevant books. Because it was written by a commentator of the Qur'an, the verses of the Qur'an are not only quoted with textual translations, but are accompanied by in-depth explanations so that its historical explanations are almost similar to interpretations of the Qur'an. It is able to explain in detail the life of the Prophet with critical analysis and illustrative pictures. In addition, its explanations greatly emphasize the humanity of the Holy Prophet. Therefore this work is not excessive in displaying the Prophet miracles or extraordinary things.

Abstract

The Islamic civilization in the era of classical Islamput science in a high position. At that time scholars did not distinguish between religious science and general science. But the principle of unity of knowledge then has faded and become a dichotomy of science when the Islamic civilization has declined. That fact is what stirs the anxiety of K.H. Imam Zarkasyi to affirm the principle of unity of knowledge because science is a unity which is derived from Allah. According to K.H. Imam Zarkasyi, the rise of Muslim civilization  is very dependent on the management of educational institution quality and solidity of Muslims. Efforts to modernize education are absolutely necessary to produce pious and knowledgeable graduates. Therefore, education curriculum at Pondok Modern Gontor applies of religious lessons and of general lessons. It is the consistency of this educational institution that is finally able to realize the implementation of advanced Islamic education which contributes to the revival of Islamic civilization.

Abstract

Luthfi Bashori is a cleric of Nahdlatul Ulama with his controversial ASWAJA Garis Lurus (Straight Line) or NU Garis Lurus. However, no in-depth research has examined his da’wah and its implications for the NU. This library research study utilized documentation and observation of Bashori's da’wah in digital media. This study focused on the objectives, strategies, themes, and reactions to Bashori's da’wah. The theory of action motives, conflict theory, and da’wah perspectives guided data analysis. This research asserted that the purpose of Bashori's da’wah is to maintain the ASWAJA (Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah) of KH. Muhammad Hasyim Asy’ari, as well as fortifying Muslims from secularism, pluralism, liberalism, Shia, and Wahhabism. According to Weber’s theory, Bashori da’wah is motivated by religious values and purposive goals. His strategy of da’wah varied depending on the context. His themes of da’wah contained Islamic law, theology, morality, and political issues. The content of his da’wah is based on his understanding of the Qur'an and hadith. In addition to getting pro and con responses from Nahdliyin, his da’wah implied strengthening religious opposition and internal contestation in the NU. This research uncovered the puritanical religious da’wah in the NU. It revealed that the NU managed internal conflict with coexistence among groups of dissenting viewpoints due to the moderation paradigm.

Abstract

This research aims to examine character education in pesantrens (Islamic boarding schools also known as pondok pesantren) as a model of religious education in transforming the attitudes of students in line with the values and culture of a diverse society. This study is based on documents related to the curriculum and student guidance system, which were confirmed through interviews with leaders and teachers, as well as observations at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, Indonesia. The research findings indicate that Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, Indonesia, has implemented a transformative education system. Students have undergone a transformation from traditional, fanatic, and closed values to modern, rational, disciplined, inclusive, independent, and responsible ones. The transformation in students' personalities occurs not only through classroom learning but also through reflective engagement in pesantren management, discussions, and public speaking exercises. The findings of this study imply that the religious education system in pesantrens should prioritize not only the cognitive aspects of doctrinal religious knowledge, but also involve students in society, fostering open, tolerant, and rational characters.

Abstract

The Rustamid Dynasty (160-296 AH / 776-909 AD) was a remarkable Ibadite dynasty. Unfortunately, most of the historical works have paid little attention to the development of Islamic civilization during the Rustamid reign. This fact is very contrary to the study of Sunnite or Shi’ite dynasties. This paper shows that the Rustamids performed their moderate policy by giving great tolerance, freedom, and equality to all citizens who lived in their territory, especially in Tahert (part of Algeria) and Jabal Nafusah (part of Libya). Consequently, this moderate policy, which was encouraged by the moderate Ibadite doctrine, had influence on the establishment of Islamic civilization in the Maghrib. The Rustamids successively played a significant role in economic prosperity, intellectual development, and Islamization. Like the Rustamids, the plural society of Indonesia can obtain the achievements of civilization by maintaining their multicultural diversity. Hence, the Indonesian government, the Muslim organizations, and all of the Muslim people should promote tolerant Islamic teachings and support intellectual movement.
