Abstract

This paper aims to discuss Indonesian Qualification Frameworks (IQFs) holistically. Today, we are being exposed to the discussions on IQFs through many socialization programs and government publications. As education practitioners, we have to be familiar with universal concepts of National Qualifications Framework (NQF) which most pioneers of NQF hold. It is not enough only having that, moreover, this paper presents other essential points about NQF and, specifically for Indonesian context, those are the potential benefits, the reasons of formulating IQFs, NQFs across countries, and further issues. I realize that this paper has not successfully contextualized into ELT as IQFs has recently been developed. However, this paper is significant engagement to IQFs for successful implementation.

The type of this research is a classroom action research. There were two cycles, each of which consisted of three meetings and ended with post-test to measure the improvement of the students’ writing ability. The data were collected by using observation lists, questionnaire, documentation, and writing test. The result showed that all of the students had passed the passing grade. In addition, they stated that they felt happy during the process of writing collaboratively as it was easier for them to compose a text collaboratively with their friends. The finding implied that writing teacher should focus on teaching and learning strategies not only focusing on the transfer of writing concepts. Therefore, collaborative narrative writing is an appropriate technique to be used in improving the students’ writing ability.

Abstract

The idea of integrating Islamic values in non-religion subjects is still in the process of shaping its format. Many possibilities and flexibilities of the integration are existing and practiced by English teachers at Islamic Junior High School—knowingly as Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs). Also, in the middle of endless idea of integration, teachers have been trying to apply the integration based on their beliefs and situation. This study outlines the teachers’ best practices on integrating Islamic values in English lesson at MTs in Jawa Timur. By using descriptive qualitative method, this study portraits 6 English as Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ best practices. Data were taken from classroom observation, interview, and documentation which then were analysed as best practices. Best practices refer to the practice of integration which is considered as working practice from each teacher’s situation. The situation was mostly influenced by teachers’ lack of confidence to contextualize and operationalize the values into the teaching materials and activities, and the lack of model for integration. Further study on how to operationalize the integration, and on developing the model of integration will be worth exploring.

Abstract

Integrating Islamic values in non-religion subjects at masdrasah has been crucial to do. This study outlines the teachers’ beliefs and practices on integrating Islamic values in English lesson at Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) Jawa Timur. By using qualitative approach, this study involved 6 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers from Surabaya, Malang, and Pasuruan representing the demography of the city as metropolitan city, education city, and santri city. Data were taken from classroom observation and interview which then those were analysed by firsly categorizing into some dimensions. The teachers’ beliefs were categorized into their knowledge on integration, the important of integration, and integration in English lesson as well as the supporting policy from the school. The teachers believed that the integration of Islamic values is significant in English lesson as the manifestation of K-13 focusing on KI 1 and KI 2, and school policy. The beliefs influence the teachers’ practices in which they have been trying to insert Islamic values in their teaching activities. The level of integration was still at integrating religious routines such as ‘doa bersama’, ‘reciting some Surah’, ‘warning praying time’. The integration in the content of English lesson was still not strongly practiced even some teachers have done it by giving added values when explaining a particular material. The situation was mostly influenced by inability to operationalize the values into the teaching materials and the lack of model for integration. Further study on how to operationalize the integration, and on developing the model of integration will be worth investigating.

Abstract

The decrease in the wildlife population over the last 30 years was caused by various human actions, one of them was triggered by various writings and discourses spread in society. This study aims to analyze the narration of documentary film "Seaspiracy" by Netflix, focusing on the representation of marine destruction. This study examines the representation of marine destruction in the context of texts, discourses, social practices and an ecolinguistic perspective. A qualitative approach was used by combining ecolinguistics (Stibbé, 2015) and Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 1995, 2003 and 2013) and LSF (Halliday, 2014) to analyze the data in depth. The data used in this study comes from the 2021 documentary "Seaspiracy", produced by Netflix. The research findings reveal linguistic features, including metaphor, irony, and similes. Regarding grammar, humans, marine animals, and the unsustainable fishing industry were found as actors, goals and attributes. However, the highest ratio lies in animals as passive participants and fishing industry players as actors (active participants). The discourse practice shows that between Netflix and Ali Tabrizi shape the audience's perspective and understanding of environmental issues and the fishing industry. In sociocultural practice, this film raises environmental concerns to change public perceptions and encourage positive action in protecting the marine environment. From an ecolinguistic perspective, this study identifies the film "Seaspiracy" as a useful contribution due to its wide dissemination to ensure the sustainability of marine ecosystems. These findings can contribute to understanding how language and discourse shape perceptions and attitudes towards environmental issues. Keywords - Eco-Critical Discourse Analysis, Film Documentary, Transitivity.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the communication style of Human-machine interaction based on ChatGPT 3.5 to understand the pros and cons, as well as potential improvements in the implementation of this technology. Humans have limitations in processing complex information. The emergence of machines helps humans complete work, and many machine features provide solutions. This research found out human-machine interaction, focuses on communication and using cooperative principles that have four maxims: maxim quantity, maxim quality, maxim relation, and maxim manner are some of the divisions that will be sought in human-machine interaction. The research uses a qualitative method by using a chatbot as a GPT version 3.5 chat that is then given a command. Then, the data is collected and analyzed. From this analysis, human-machine interaction qualitatively has good performance but has a deficiency in maximum quantity due to too much information given. The outcome of the violation of the maxim quantity that stands out requires self-interpretation where the statements correspond to the question. This research is expected to help develop human-machine interaction technology primarily in business.

Abstract

English teachers often face confusion to relate between the materials and religious values especially teachers of Islamic school who should strongly show the relation. This paper aims to develop a teaching prototype as a guideline leading to the integration of religious values into English lesson for Islamic Junior High School.  Design-based research was used as research method in which need analysis was initially done for gaining EFL teachers’ reflection and aspiration on their English class, and their understanding on integration of Islamic values. Three English teachers from both pesantren-based and non pesantren-based were involved as the research subjects. The need analysis was the basis for the prototype which then followed by expert judgment to shape the quality of prototype and future direction for integrated-holistic teaching. The study showed that integrated-holistic teaching for English lessons could cover spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and social dimensions which are very essential for students to be holistic/insan kamil students. In conclusion, English teachers are strongly possible to contextualize  the prototype. Pedagogical implication of the study could be manifested by the existing clear direction for teaching English holistically. This study is not free from limitation. It needs to be more operationalized to potentially build students who are spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and socially mature.
