Abstract

This study aims to determine how students perceive the use of WhatsApp to support blended learning at SMPN 1 Motui. This study aims to determine how students perceive the use of WhatsApp to support blended learning at SMPN 1 Motui. The design in this research is descriptive qualitative using a questionnaire and interview instruments. In collecting data through questionnaires the researcher used a questionnaire sheet with two yes/no scales which were distributed to all students in one class and interviewed 6 students. The subjects in this study were 23 students of class IX. The results of the questionnaire showed that students gave a positive perception of the use of WhatsApp as a learning medium. They feel comfortable learning by using WhatsApp media in the learning process. The results of the interview revealed that teachers use WhatsApp to send learning materials in the form of document files, while students send assignments in the form of files, text and picture and students fill out the attendance list. However, there are also challenges in using WhatsApp including unstable network connections, limited internet quota and not having a mobile phone. This study also revealed that using WhatsApp can provide convenience for students including: 1) students can learn remotely anywhere and anytime, 2) can convey/receive information on learning materials, 3) easily send assignments, 4) can easily interact with teachers or classmates, 5) can increase positive attitudes and student learning outcomes in class.

Abstract

Kampus Mengajar program as one of Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) programs initiated by the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia in 2020 is one of the programs that increase the professionalism of students as prospective teachers in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aims to determine the Perception of EFL Pre-service Teachers in Managing the Learning Process during Kampus Mengajar Program. By using a qualitative descriptive design, six pre-service teachers of the English education study program at the Muhammadiyah University of Kendari were interviewed as alumni of Kampus Mengajar program batch I. The results of this study indicate that participants have a positive perception of Kampus Mengajar program to improve their competence as pre-service EFL teachers. However, in the results of the study, there were also many obstacles faced by participants such as difficulties in designing learning caused by differences between basic education taken during lectures and subjects taught during teaching, difficulties in classroom management, and also difficulties in communication caused by differences culture. Despite that, Kampus Mengajar program is highly recommended to be implemented in teacher education by students and should be encouraged by universities.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa dalam menggunakan WhatsApp sebagai media pembelajaran bahasa Inggris pada siswa kelas VII-2 di SMPN 1 Wundulako Kabupaten Kolaka Provinsi Sulawesi Tenggara.  Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMP Negeri 1 Wundulako pada bulan Oktober 2021. Untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian digunakan desain penelitian kualitatif dengan subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VII-2.  Data diperoleh dengan melakukan wawancara yang di dasarkan oleh 5 aspek yang di adaptasi oleh teori Rubin & Chisnell (2008), yaitu learnability, efficiency, memorability, error dan satisfaction. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kecenderungan ke persepsi positif di aspek learnability, efficiency, memorability dan satisfaction. Sebagian besar siswa EFL merasa senang karena belajar bahasa Inggris melalui WhatsApp mudah karena dapat belajar dimana saja dan kapan saja. Melalui fitur-fiturnya, WhatsApp memudahkan komunikasi dan meningkatkan interaksi dengan guru atau teman sekelas, meningkatkan sikap positif siswa, meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa di kelas, siswa menjadi lebih aktif, lebih fasih berbahasa Inggris dan dapat mengetahui kosakata bahasa Inggris baru.

Abstract

The nature influence of speaking anxiety on foreign language (FL) learning settings has been established. In addition, research acknowledges the relevance of speaking performance in affecting individual predisposition to experience anxious feelings. However, few studies examine the Indonesian college students' anxiety influencing factors, mainly when speaking English. Data strategies employed a parallel design combining quantitative and qualitative methods mixing a closed-ended Likert-scale questionnaire with an in-depth interview. Twenty-eight college students responded online via Google Form to the questionnaire, while in addition, the in-depth interviews lasted 45-60 minutes with six college students. The results indicate that learning situations in classroom activities revolve around how teachers teach, college students' self-confidence, belief in language learning experiences, and excessive learning material are nature-related prominence factors of college students' anxiety in speaking English. In contrast, a lack of college students' preparation has no effect. Examined are the means through which this research contributes to the advancement of understanding and comprehension of previously unidentified components that influence college students' speaking anxiety.
