Abstract

The main problem of this study was “Is there any significant effect on the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught through flexible grouping strategy and those who are not?” Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of flexible grouping strategy on the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension achievement of Senior High school students of Daarul Aitam Palembang. This study applied pre-experimental method with pre-test and post-test design. The population of this study was all the tenth grade students of Senior High School of Daarul Aitam Palembang, in the Academic Year of 2019/2020 with the total number 56 students. The sample was 29 students were in experimental group from X IPA.  In collecting the data, a multiple choices and true or false test of narrative text was used, and the data were analyzed by using IBM SPSS Statistic. The result of this study showed that the experimental group students’ average score in pretest was 58.7, and in post-test it was 74.05. The value of t-obtained was 300.86 where the value of t-table was 1.70. It was assumed that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Besides that there was significant difference on the eighth grade students’ reading achievement between those who are taught by using flexible grouping strategy and those who are not taught in Senior High School of Daarul Aitam Palembang.  The results of using flexible grouping strategy revealed an improvement for students reading achievement. Keywords: Teaching, Reading, Narrative Text, Flexible Grouping

Abstract

The main problem of this study is  “What were the eleventh grade students’ perception on the use Johnny grammar’s word challenge application in learning prepositions and the impact of Johnny grammar’s word challenge application the eleventh grade at PGRI Vocational High School 2 of Palembang?”. This study aimed to investigate the eleventh grade students’ perception on the use Johnny grammar’s word challenge application in learning prepositions at PGRI Vocational High School 2 of Palembang. This data acquired from questionnaires based on four indicators, this research used a descriptive qualitative method in this study. Based on the achievement of the questionnaire, it can be concluded that all indicator high category shows that amounts to 9 (16.36%) students which means the students have comprehension ability is fair, the indicator medium category shows that amounts to 41(74.54%) students which means all of the students understand Johnny Grammar’s Word Challenge Application and the low category shows that amounts to 11 (20%) students which means the students half of them can not able to understand Johnny Grammar’s Word Challenge Application. So, it can be concluded that using Johnny Grammar’s Word Challenge Application can help students learn prepositions

Abstract

The main of this study  “was there any significant effect on the Second semester students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught by using Bilingual Story Book and those who are not? The population of  this study was the second semester PGSD Study Program FKIP University PGRI of Palembang in academic year 2019/2020. The total number of the population was 120 students, The sample consisted of 36 students of 2O and 36 students of 2Q. The method of the research was the experimental method and the data were collected through written test in multiple choice form. The test was administrated twice as the pre-test and post-test. The result were analyzed by using t-test. The students’ average score of pretest in control class of 2O were 59.20 and 6.12. While the students’ average score of post test in experimental class of 2Q were 6.52 and 7.13. And By using those result, it was found that the result of this research based on her students’ average score of post test in experimental and control class was 4.779 that is higher than its the critical value. The null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there is significant difference on teaching writing narrative paragraph through Roundtable Technique to the tenth grade students of Gajah Mada Vocational High School of Palembang. This study applied quasi-experimental method with non-equivalent control group design. The population of this study was all tenth grade students of Gajah Mada Vocational High School of Palembang, in the academic year of 2021/2022 with the total number of 216 students. The samples were 72 students, 36 students were in experimental group from X.1 class and 36 students were in control group from X.2 class taken by using purposive sampling. In collecting the data, a written test of the recount text was used, and the data were analyzed by using Application of IBM SPSS Statistics 23. The result of this study showed that the experimental group students’ average score in pre-test, it was 64.32, and in post-test, it was 71.66 while the control group students’ average score in pre-test was 64.50 and in post-test, it was 65.70. The value of t-obtained was (3.843) which were higher than the value of t-table (2.004) at the significance 0.05 in two tailed-test with 54 (df). It was assumed that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that there was significant difference on teaching writing of Gajah Mada Vocational High School of Palembang and those who were not.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to describe how the students use the journalist questions technique in writing ability in narrative text and to describe the students’ responses produced in the class, the researcher would use written responses. This study used qualitative research, related to collect and analyse the data in the various forms, especially non-numeric forms. The researcher chosed this approach because the study's objectives include demonstrating knowledge of detailed and in-depth sample evaluation as well as class XI students at Senior High School PGRI 2 Palembang. The result showed that the narrative text was an idea from the students to understand and how to use journalist questions in writing with narrative text. The result showed that the 11th graders have a positive response towards the use of journalist questions in writing ability with narrative text. As a results of the students’ responses produced in the class, the researcher found that students showed a range of behaviors that demonstrated their writing ability in narrative text and evaluation of the texts as well as of their responses. The class had a relatively sufficient feedback which provided. Students demonstrated a high comprehension from the text. The amounts of tasks in the text clearly aimed to reach the goal. Students’ responses in written form also showed that they were trained to be more capable in writing.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the speaking proficiency of students in the hospitality field and identify the specific requirements they have for speaking English. The research design employed for this study was qualitative, utilizing a case study approach. To gather data regarding the students' speaking proficiency and their requirements for speaking English in the hospitality field, the researcher employed open-ended questions during data collection with the participants. Thematic analysis, using a coding system, was used to analyze the data and identify patterns related to the students' speaking proficiency and their necessities for speaking English in the hospitality field. The findings of this study revealed that the students' speaking proficiency in the hospitality field served three main purposes: (1) meeting content-related needs, (2) utilizing appropriate learning media, and (3) addressing specific topics. Additionally, the study identified that the necessities of hospitality students in speaking English were focused on facilitating the learning process and optimizing their ability to speak English in the context of the hospitality field.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the learning styles utilized by students at Nurul Huda Senior High School and their correlation with English achievement. It adopted a correlational design and employed a quantitative methodology to analyze the relationship between students' learning styles and their English performance. The study employed the VAK Model, which encompasses Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic learning styles. The questionnaire utilized in the research was developed based on the VAK Learning Style Questionnaire. A total of 30 tenth-grade students from Nurul Huda Senior High School participated in the study. The questionnaire results indicated that the students employed various learning styles: 20% preferred kinesthetic, 56.7% preferred visual, 23.3% preferred auditory, and others exhibited a preference for more than one learning style. Future researchers could explore different theories, employ interviews, and include a larger number of participants. Additionally, conducting similar studies at Nurul Huda Senior High School to analyze other factors influencing students' English achievement would be beneficial. The researcher hopes that by identifying students' learning styles, both students and teachers can become more aware of individual learning preferences within the classroom setting.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to assess the quality of listening materials in the English textbook "Work in Progress: Buku SMA," published by Pusat Perbukuan in 2022. The research focused on evaluating the effectiveness of the listening materials based on a set of criteria developed by Zhang (2020). The research question formulated was, "What is the quality of the listening materials in the English textbook?" The methodology employed in this research was content analysis. The data were collected through document analysis, and the researcher organised and classified the data into eight criteria. After categorising the data according to the seven criteria, the researcher analysed the data chapter by chapter. Finally, conclusions were drawn based on the findings. According to the results, out of the eight criteria, five were fully met, one was partially met, and two were not met. Therefore, it can be concluded that the listening materials in the English textbook "Work in Progress" are deemed "effective."

Abstract

The main problem in this research  is: what are the elements that influence the attitudes and experiences of EFL teachers in implementing multiliteracy, and how can EFL teachers be used as role models for implementing multiliteracy in terms of their attitudes and experiences? The purpose of this research is to find out how the attitudes and experiences of teachers towards students during the learning process affect them and how multiliteracy can be applied during the teaching and learning process, whether it makes learning effective or vice versa. This research was carried out at SMP PGRI 1 of Palembang. This research was carried out using qualitative methods. First, the researcher made observations at school to find out how effective the teaching and learning process was in class, especially in English lessons. Furthermore, the researchers conducted interviews with the English teacher and distributed 20 questionnaires to 30 students in class VIII.4 in the even-numbered 2022/2023 academic year. Based on the findings from this study, the researcher concludes the results of the research analysis. And from the results of this analysis, the researchers concluded that 90% of SMP PGRI students liked English lessons and always got good motivation and role models from the teacher, meaning that the teacher could provide good motivation to students and always give a good attitude during the learning process. Students are also more active in the application of multiliteracy because there is good interaction between the teacher and students.

Abstract

The aims of this study was to know the ways or the stages use by the English teachers to design Merdeka Belajar lesson plan and to find out the difficulties face by the English teachers in designing the Merdeka Belajar lesson plan. The method of this study was qualitative descriptive method. The techniques of collecting data was using triangulation, which are observation, interview and also documentation. The interview conducted with three English teachers at SMK PGRI 2 of Palembang. After the data was obtained, the next step that the process of reducing the data occurring repeatedly. The results showed that for the first year, teachers were still confused about implementing Merdeka Belajar curriculum. So, teachers at SMK PGRI 2 Palembang have already join In House Training (IHT), in 2021 and 2022. Although the teacher faced some difficulties and obstacles such as lack of experience, inadequate infrastructure facilities from school, and there are some still confused about the learning system. To overcome that difficulties, teacher’s at SMK PGRI 2 of Palembang learn from the Merdeka Mengajar platfrom and collaborate with each teacher.
