Abstract

Operating room scheduling is a complex process that involves various resources and takes the interests of many parties into consideration. The genetic algorithm is the frequently used metaheuristic algorithm to solve a large-size operating room scheduling problem. Many techniques have been developed to improve the genetic algorithms' performance in dealing with the operating room scheduling complexity. In this paper, we survey available literature to identify improvement techniques used at each stage of the genetic algorithm and capture the underlying problems. This review provides a mapping of improvement techniques in genetic algorithms correlating with the considered problems. The results can be employed by other researchers as a guide for future research in integrating a genetic algorithm or other population-based metaheuristic algorithm with a recent heuristic algorithm following the future directions of operating room scheduling research.

Abstract

The design of facility layout in a production floor determines the level of effectiveness and efficiency of the production process. Errors in arranging the layout in the production floor can disrupt the continuity of the production process and prevent optimal results. Production activities that occur over a long period of time make any inaccuracies in layout planning result in significant losses. In companies with Job Shop production type, which is characterized by identical products and varied processes, the production flow changes with each product made. Based on these issues, this research aims to optimize the layout in a company engaged in sheet metal working industry using metaheuristic algorithms such as Simulated Annealing (SA), Large Neighborhood Search (LNS), Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS), and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). The best total distance results were obtained by the SA, LNS, and ALNS algorithms, with a total travelled distance of 897,171 meters and a facility arrangement of 7-5-6-4-3-2-1 or 1-2-3-4-6-5-7. Additionally, considering computation time, the SA algorithm is the best choice as it has the fastest computation time compared to other algorithms.

Abstract

This study develops a practical inventory control model for perishable pharmaceutical products by addressing the common limitation of traditional inventory methods that often overlook product shelf life or require complex optimization procedures. The proposed model enhances practicality by integrating shelf-life considerations into the (R, nQ) heuristic approach, allowing order quantities and reorder points to be determined through a simple and easily implementable procedure. This approach is further combined with a multi-criteria ABC classification that incorporates annual demand, lead time, and unit cost, enabling more informed prioritization of inventory items. The model was applied to 243 pharmaceutical products in a health department. The results show that incorporating shelf-life constraints reduced the inventory value of items exceeding their usable period by 45% and generated an overall 2% decrease in total inventory value. These findings demonstrate the model’s ability to minimize waste due to expiration while maintaining operational feasibility. By offering a straightforward and shelf-life–integrated decision rule, the model provides a more practical alternative to existing inventory methods, especially in healthcare settings with limited analytical resources.

Abstract

The rapid growth of the fashion industry has led to the emergence of fast fashion, which often overlooks its environmental impacts. In contrast, environmentally conscious practices are being adopted by some enterprises, including an MSME located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, specializing in ecoprint fabric production. To evaluate its environmental and economic performance, this study conducts a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) focusing on green production, green transportation, and green packaging. LCA results show that the use of LPG in the steaming process has notable environmental impacts, particularly in fossil depletion (0.00076), climate change–human health (0.000359), and human toxicity (0.0000956). Based on these findings, Solar PV was evaluated as an improvement condition to reduce dependence on LPG and mitigate environmental impacts across several categories. However, human toxicity increased from 9.56E-05 to 0.00164, indicating environmental trade-offs throughout the life cycle. The CBA results indicate that the existing production system is economically feasible, with NPV of IDR 58,781,312, IRR of 9%, BEP of 2,136.34 units (IDR 534,084,829.96), Payback Period of 5.52 years, and BCR of 1.40. This implies that the project is already economically feasible under current LPG use, while the substitution with Solar PV further enhances its sustainability and overall benefits.
