Abstract

The Bali Strait has an important role for the coastal society of East Java and Bali, because as a supplier of lemuru fish. However, the quality of lemuru fish is decrease due to the presence of plastic waste that flow into the Bali Strait. Plastic is a material that’s difficult to decompose, but by using oxidation or mechanical processes causing plastic break to micrometer. Microplastic will be more easily eaten and have a direct impact on the food chain and cause morphological damage or chemical effects that carried by plastic. Based on these problems, its important to conduct research on spatial and temporal microplastic movements in the Bali Strait. However, the wide area of the Bali Strait and the amount of time needed to collect data in the field directly, numerical modeling method was use to solve this problem by using the Finite Volume Ocean Coastal Model (FVCOM) modeled in 3-D and microplastic divided into 3 sizes (0.3 mm, 1 mm, 5 mm). Spatially the movement of microplastic with a size of 0.3 mm, 1 mm, and 5 mm has a relatively similar movement, but has different position based on depth. Temporally the highest total number of microplastic sites is in the potential area of Blimbing Sari catching in the third week, and the potential area for catching Bukit on second week. Whereas in the potential areas of capture Senggrong, Anyir, Watu Anyir and Pang-Pang Bay were not found microplastic.

Abstract

Lemuru fish is one of fishery commodity that has high economical value and one of fish that most catched by fisherman in Bali Strait. Lemuru fish had been caught in Bali Strait was fluctuating every month and every years. This condition was related with food source of Lemuru fish such as phytoplankton and zooplankton. So this research was conducted to explained the relationship phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance with Lemuru fish catched in Bali strait. This study focus in Bali strait during March until May 2017. Determination of sampling point used area sampling method while water sampling occured in surface water with pouring method. Total of phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance in Bali strait in March until May had formed the sinusoidal model with their abundance ranged 301 ind/L – 604 ind/L and 7 ind/L – 12 ind/L. Plankton abundance in Bali strait in March until May (transisonal season 1) was categorized low abundance if compared with plankton abundance in another season. The low value of phytoplankton abundance caused by non upwelling phenomenon and grazing process and the low abundance of zooplankton caused by low rate of zooplankton and predation by Lemuru fish. Phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance had strong relationship with Lemuru fish catched with correlation coefficient value 0.76 and 0.69. This condition caused by phytoplankton and zooplankton are source of Lemuru fish food.

Abstract

Benoa bay is one of estuary that located in the Southern part of Bali Island, and as a strategic tourism destination. The increased of the human activity has an important role to give an ecological pressure for the seawater ecosystem in the Benoa bay. Total suspended solid (TSS) and turbidity is one of the important indicators that could be determining the quality of the seawater. As the estuary, Benoa bay received fresh water from the river discharge that also potentially carries any material to the bay. In addition, port activity is also has an important role in contributing a various material to the Benoa bay. From this research, we found that the TSS concentration and the turbidity are higher in the surface water and also in the bottom layer. TSS concentration and the turbidity also varied from the bay mouth trough the line of vessel onto the inner of bay. TSS concentration and turbidity in the bay mouth has a smaller concentration rather than in the inner part of bay. TSS concentration and turbidity in the inner of bay could be caused by the port activity. In addition, seawater circulation is also has an importan factor to contributing the TSS concentration and the turbidity. Sea current would be erroted the seabottom and with the different shape of the topography could be increased the TSS and turbidity.

Abstract

Banda Sea is one of the waters had rich of fish catch. The high catch of fish was related with primary productivity of these waters. Net Primary productivity in the Banda Sea was related with some oceanographic factors such as current, ARLINDO, upwelling and downwelling. The oceanographic factors are influenced by ENSO and IOD. The aim of this research to explained the variability of net primary productivity in Banda Sea and its relation with oceanography factor such as ENSO and monsoon. Data that used in this research were data from MODIS satellite and for analysis of net primary productivity data used Vertically Generalized Production Model (VGPM). The relation of net primary productivity with ENSO and IOD can used pearson correlation method. The result of net primary productivity value in Banda Sea was about 100 gCm-2day-1 - 1200 gCm-2day-1, with the highest apex net primary productivity in August precisely in the east season. The high value of net primary productivity due to upwelling in the season. The value of net primary productivity in west season was decreased. This condition caused by the downwelling of the season. The region with the highest net primary productivity value was the northeast of Banda Sea and the region with lowest net primary productivity value was the western of Banda Sea. The relationship between ENSO with net primary productivity in Banda Sea classified in medium correlation with value 0,556, while relationship between IOD and net primary productivity classified in weak correlation with value 0,23.

Abstract

Benoa Bay is semi- enclosed bay, which has embouchures. The existence of embouchures are able to contribute the Total Suspended Solid (TSS) to the Bay. As the one of pollution parameter, TSS could be influencing the ecosystem of coral reefs, seagrass, and the existence of dissolved oxygen. This research was aimed to know the spatial distribution of TSS on the surface layer in Benoa Bay. Sample was taken on January 2016, in flood and ebb. TSS was analyzed using gavimetry method based on SNI No. 06-6989.3-2004. Spatial distribution was analyzed by interpolation method- Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW). The concentration range of TSS on January in ebb to tide and tide to ebb was 22.44 mg/L to 261.33 mg/L. The highest distribution in flood was dominated in around of embouchures. It was suspected by inputs of suspended matter from land to the bay. In tide to ebb condition, TSS concentration was high in some areas, such as around the embouchures, midlle and mouth area of bay. The high concentration was suspected by pattern of tidal current in Benoa Bay. The pattern of current in ebb was leaving to the mouth of Benoa Bay, therefore the TSS concentration dispersed to the mouth of the bay.

Abstract

Microplastic, the pieces of plastic sized < 5 mm, are dangerous materials for marine organisms where if is ingested can anatomically and physiogically change the marine organism. Manta rays (Mobula alfredi) are filter feeders where they eat planktons and small fishes by filtering seawater. Mantas can filter up to hundreds cubic meter everyday, indicating the chances of it ingesting microplastics. This research was conducted to find out the microplastic characteristics at Big Manta Bay, Nusa Penida. Samples were obtained at two sites, North and South Big Manta Bay, by trawling 6 times on each site that represents Big Manta Bay using a plankton net. Samples were processed by separating plastics and organic matters using density separation method, and afterwards identified based on its type, quantity and size using a dissecting microscope. Results from the research came back stating the microplastic abundance reached 123,767 pieces/km2, with a total number of microplastics up to 174 pcs. The types of plastics most frequently found are fragments (44,69%), films (38,55%), fiber (14,53%) and foam (2,23%). Samples were also analysed using FTI-R Spectrometry, where plastics are identified as Polypropylene (PP) and Low-density Polyethylene (LDPE). Both polymers are the top two polymers that are produced globally.

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the coral health condition of genus Porites at Jemeluk beach and Penuktukan beach with the different of reef geomorphology. Coral reef data was collected for two days in Jemeluk beach (reef flats) in March 2017 and in Penuktukan beach (reef slope) in April 2017. Each observation location consisted of 3 stations parallel to the coastline. Observation of coral health data using belt transect method size 2 x 25 m with width of 1 meter each to left and right side. Photo documentation was performed on coral reefs of Porites and subsequently identified the types of diseases and forms of health problems using Coral Disease Handbook, Guidelines for Assessment, Monitoring and Management. The types of coral diseases found in both beaches are ulcerative white spot and white plague. The number of dominant colonies that infected with the disease was found on Jemeluk beach which has coastal morphology of coral reefs. The coral health conditions of the genus Porites found on Jemeluk and Penuktukan beaches are in an unhealthy condition. Compromised health is dominant in Jemeluk beach, this is estimated to be caused by the presence of river flow at observation sites which is relatively high. In addition, the coral reef morphology in Jemeluk beach is reef flat causing the reefs in this area to be more susceptible to damage.

Abstract

Bunutan village is located in the Abang Subdistrict, Karangasem Regency, Bali. Marines of Bunutan has a coral reef coverage and reef fish under the water. This study aims to determine the species composition of reef fish in marine of Bunutan. The methods used to take reef fish data is Visual Census along 50 meters transect parallel a coastline at a depth of ±5 meters. Result of this study shows thats abudance of reef fish is about 1513 individual from 68 species and 18 family all around transect. The highest abudance derived from Pomacentridae Family with a total 1055 individual from 22 species founded. The composition of species in Bunutan marine site generally in a good condition with high diversity H’ = 3,188418, uniformity is fairly stable with value E = 0,753032 and with the value of dominance C = 0,069245 or nothing of coral reef fish which dominate each other. In terms of role fish in the sea, reef fish in Bunutan marine site have major fish about 92%, target fish 2% and indicator fish 6%. When relating to the condition of coral reefs in the marines of Bunutan, hard coral cover percentage is on 48.5% to 54.5% thats indicates the condition of coral reefs on moderate to good condition. The condition of coral reefs is utilized by reef fish as a place of refuge, feeding or breeding grounds, causing the species composition of reef fish in the marine of Bunutan on relatively good.

Abstract

National Ocean Atmospheric Administrations (NOAA) by the program coral reef Watch (CRW) has developed a method to estimate the potential of coral bleaching using Sea Surface Temperature (SST). The products are hot spot (HS) and degree heating week (DHW). HS is the SST 1°C (SSTL?1) above normal and DHW is the length of HS inhabits a place. The CRW product do not provided detail informations because it has a lower resolution. It is need a satellite image with a higher resolution to provide better informations. One of the satellite images that can be used is Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) with a spatial resolution of 1 km. The purpose of this study was to know HS and DHW distribution patterns and status of coral bleaching in Bali waters seen from the analysis of HS and DHW. MODIS data is used daily, then do mosaicing process to get a weekly SPL (8 daily) and the monthly SST. Monthly SPL normally used to get maximum montly mean (MMM). HS obtained from the difference between 8 daily weekly SST and SST normal (MMM).).Location bleaching based on data Coral Triangle Center (CTC) and coralwatch.org. SST results revealed difference of SPL in 2015 and 2016 amounted to 1.48°C. Highest DHW in Bali Hai, Nusa Penida is 10 465° C-weeks in April 2016. Based on the value HS and DHW coral reefs in Bali waters threatened bleaching level Alert 1 and Alert level 2.

Abstract

Epiphelic diatoms are the living diatoms adhere to the bottom substrate of the waters. Epiphelic diatoms ware used as bioindicators because sensivity of enviromental change, widely distributed, and ware not affected by currents. Epiphelic diatom research as a bioindicator of pollution in the Suwung estuary was conducted in December 2016 and January 2017. The sampling of epiphelic diatom using the method of "Lens tissue trapping method". The results of research in December 2016 found 34 species of epiphelic diatoms, while in January 2017 found 24 species of epiphelic diatom. Species that are often found in this study are Pleurosigma clavei, Rhabdonema arcuatum, Synedra gailloni and Gomphonema angustatum. The highst of epipelic diatom abundance in estuari suwung in January 2017 was 8.82 Ind/and the lowest epiphelic diatom abundance of 0.41 Ind/. The assessment of contamination using epiphelic diatom using two methods such as diversity index and saprobik index. The pollution assessment based on the diversity index shows that in December 2016 it was varied, not contaminated, mildly polluted, moderately polluted while the saprobic index-based valuation was varied ie clean, moderately polluted and heavily polluted. Assessment of pollution with saprobik index is used to know the contamination of organic matter. Diversity index in January 2017 and the saprobic index had the same pattern that almost of station research in Suwung estuary research stations were moderately polluted and there was an increase in pollution
