Abstract

Fluctuation of water regimes where plant grows has been known to affect the plant chemical, nutrition compositions and plant chemical defenses, which can affect the vulnerability of plants to insect herbivores. This research aimed to compare the concentration of plant nutrition and chemical defenses of Melaleuca ercifolia grows on different water regimes, subsequently to insect herbivore attacks. The leaf total nitrogen was higher in plants growing in water fluctuated areas, therefore the insect herbivores compared to plants growing in prolong-flooded condition. Insect herbivores prefer to consume plants that are more nutritious and less affected by the plant growing conditions.

Abstract

Gerris marginatus is one fresh water insect distributed from temperate to tropicalareas. It can be found in almost every freshwater biotope, making them excellent objects forecological and biogeographic studies.  Most recent studies found that this water insect wasone good candidate for examining the effect of fresh water pollution.  This species showsmorphometric differences between male and female, but there has no studies examining thismorphometric differences particularly in tropical areas.  This study aimed to determine andinvestigate the morphometric differences between male and female and their sex ratio of G.marginatus in one of freshwater body in Bali.   Samples were collected from Jangu River atKarangasem Regency on February 2014.  Samples were preserved in 70 % awaiting foridentification and further studies. Identification was performed at Animal TaxonomyLaboratory, Biology Department. The results show that there were morphometric differencesbetween male and female of G. marginatus in tropical area.  Males were significantly largerof many variable measured compared to females. However, they also exhibit sex ratio biastoward females.

Abstract

This research is conducted to find out the genetic profiles of Kayuan clan which is belong to Pasek Catur Sanak Bali Mula, indigenous Balinese people. The DNA profiles is identified by using Microsatellite DNA of Y chromosome. Genes or DNA in Y chromosome are descended from father to son (patrilinealism). Four loci of microsatellite DNA from Y chromosome are used, including DYS19, DYS390, DYS393 and DYS395 to amplified DNA samples from 67 males probands.  The probands are people of Kayuan clan from Siakin, Songan, Blandingan and Kutuh villages, Kintamani sub district and others are originally from Jehem village, Tembuku sub district, Bangli regency. The research found 12 allele varieties from all the analyzed loci, which resulted in low genetic diversity (0.33 + 0.001). There are 4 combinations alleles of 4 loci that created12  various haplotypes, the greatest one is haplotype 1 (0.39), followed by haplotype 2 (0.16), haplotype 7 (0,12) and the smallest one is haplotype 6 (0,10). On the other hand, eight other alleles found on the smaller frequencies. Two similar allele combinations were also found on DNA profiles of Celagi clan, which is also belong to the similar family, Pasek Catur Sanak Bali Mula. The two allele are haplotype 6 and 5 found in both, Pasek Kayuan and Pasek Celagi. The haplotype 6 as dominant allele of Celagi clan by adoption, haplotype 5 however, the frequency was the lowest. This allele only detected in one member of each clan due to mutation.

Abstract

Southern Bluefin Tuna in spawning area of the Eastern Indian Ocean where the Indonesian’s longliners operated has a specific character in term of size, age, sex-specific growth rate and the population. The aims of this study are to determined changes in size/age, sex-specific growth rate and virtual population analysis of Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) in the spawning area. This study is important to find out the successful management of SBT in spawning area by looking at the catch at age/size movement, sex-specific growth analysis and the estimation of the population by virtual population analysis. In this study, we were used 452 pairs of otolith with fish sized from 134-196 cmFL and fish aged from 8-20 years. The growth equation was Lt = 191 (1-e-0,167(t+1,081)). Catch at age structure was distributed from 5-22 years with mean and mode of age were 9.63 and 9 years. The distribution of mode changed from year to year shifting to a younger fish. In 2012, the mode was 10 years but entering 2013-2014 the mode was shifted to 6 years. In 2015-2017, the mode was increased from 7 years (2015) to 8 years (2016) and 9 years (2017). The fishing pressure happened in the age group under 20 years. In 2012 to 2014, the highest fishing pressure respectively obtained in the age group of 13 to 11 years with an average length of 167 to 174 cmFL. Entering 2015 and 2016, the highest fishing pressure obtained in the age group of 6 years with an average length of 138 cmFL. The exploitation rate ranged from 0.14/year to 0.25/year meaning that the exploitation was in optimal condition.

Abstract

Seagrass is one of the important ecosystems, both physically and biologically. In addition, seagrasses also act as the main producers in food webs, become shelters, forage and breed various types of biota, one of which is periphyton. Periphyton is a collection of micro-organisms and plants (a collection of cyanobacteria and microinvertebrate algae) that live around the epiphyton in the waters. This study aims to determine the type composition and diversity of periphyton that attaches to seagrass leaves. The method used is the observation method. Data retrieval is done by the transect line method. Periphyton compositions obtained were as many as 23 types of periphyton consisting of 4 classes, namely Bacillariophyceae (16 species), Cyanophyceae (4 species), Euglenophyceae (1 species) and Chlorophyceae (2 species). The highest composition was found in the Bacillariophyceae class, which was 63% and the lowest composition was in the Chlorophyceae class of 1%. Periphyton diversity includes diversity index, uniformity index and dominance index. Where the value of the diversity index is classified as moderate, perifiton uniformity index value is high, and the perifiton dominance index value is relatively low.
