Abstract

Undergraduate students are required to think critically and put it into their writings and research. However, it is challenging for the students to do so, since they might encounter plagiarism issues, as they try to make use of their own voice. This study, carrying out a research and development design with a research subject of 77 students who programmed the Reading for Research course, aimed to produce educational products in the form of learning materials that can help them during their critical annotated bibliography composition. Data were collected in three stages using interview guidelines and inquiry journals in the preliminary research stage, observation sheet of validation form in the model development stage, and observation sheet in the form of field notes in the model trial stage. In the preliminary field testing of the use of the tutorials in the learning materials for Reading for Research class, it is found that writing Critical Annotated Bibliography while still including their voices as writers became easier for students. This is because the instructions used in the teaching materials that the writing team compiled are very explicit, so students can easily follow and execute the instructions in writing.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the emergence of hegemonic masculinity shown by the androgynous model in Surabaya. This study applies gender performativity by Judith Butler to elaborate on how hegemonic masculinity is manifested. The result of this study reveals that the emergence of hegemonic masculinity is negotiated. Since the idea of androgyny is stigmatized and marginalized, the embodiment of the male androgynous model carries a new standard of masculinity and holds legitimation in society. Nevertheless, He still needed to perform the idea of heteronormativity, for example throughout his sexual orientation, personality and daily outifits. As a result, this narrative infers that in the practice of hegemonic masculinity, the male androgynous still needs to strive to earn legitimation by adopting the concept of gender performativity.

Abstract

This study examines the procedures adapted for the proper translation of (character) names in the anime Beyblade and the effects of applying these translation procedures. Character names belong to the Culture Specific Items (CSIs) group known as proper names. As a CSI, names can contain historical and/or cultural references, which makes them difficult to translate. The study extracted the original names from the source text, Bakuten Shoot Beyblade, and compared them to their English version in the target text, Beyblade. The data collected were analyzed using the translation procedures proposed by Fernandes (2006) and Hervey Higgins (1992) to determine how the translation affects the movie. The analysis indicated that name translation in Beyblade mainly employed translation procedures of Recreation, Substitution, and Copy. They result in the loss of cultural reference and hidden meaning behind the names, affecting the story's intrinsic elements, particularly regarding the plot and characterization. The American audiences, therefore, are deprived of the opportunity to gain specific insights into the characters’ roles, relationships, and traits embedded in the character names of the original Bakuten Shoot Beyblade.

Abstract

This study performs content analysis on an Android game titled Legend of the Phoenix. Legend of the Phoenix, commonly known as LoP, is an otome (girl) game released by Modo Game in 2020. Like most otome games, Legend of the Phoenix revolves around the journey of a young woman who is given a second chance at life after her first ends tragically. The player takes the role of this young woman and has to complete various missions and storylines in order to complete the game. This study aims to find messages about gender presented in the game by analyzing its visual and narrative content. It focuses on identifying female masculinity in the special recruitment group of Female General or Heroine. The game characters being analyzed are the four Generals in Legend of the Phoenix—Hua Mulan, Mu Guiying, Liang Hongyu, and Qin Liangyu. They are examined in terms of role, abilities, and appearance and their relation to the concept of female masculinity introduced by Halberstam. The result shows that the Female General belongs to Femme Pretender type. It means that the characters of Hua Mulan, Mu Guiying, Liang Hongyu, and Qin Liangyu possess masculine traits (role and abilities) while also keeping their female appearance (physical and outfit).

Abstract

This study aims to examine translation techniques and the translation quality of the ESL student’s translation products in translating words or phrases of cultural terms. This study was a descriptive qualitative design. The data collection techniques applied content analysis. The subjects of this research were 10 English Literature study program students who have taken the Introduction to Translation course. The instrument used in this research is the text of travel writing published in Colors, an inflight magazine, which was published by the Indonesian national airline. The results of the study depicted some shifting in cultural categories, namely from the ecological category to the concept and material culture, the habit category becomes an activity category and the activity category becomes an organization in the target language. Another one is the blurred distinction between leisure and concept in religion. Implementing translation techniques that are oriented to the source text, such as pure borrowing techniques, literal translation, and established equivalences produces a high translation quality. Applying these techniques is characterized as foreignization. In short, the student's translator should be aware of not only their linguistic competence but also their transfer competence to produce a good translated text.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and evaluate Android-based crossword puzzle learning media for modern Indonesian literature using the ProProfs application. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) methodology, collecting data through questionnaires and tests. Three types of questionnaires were distributed: material expert validation, media expert validation, and user validation. Additionally, user tests were conducted to assess comprehension of the literature content transformed into crossword puzzles. The combined validation results from material experts, media experts, and users yielded an overall average score of 3.77 out of 5, indicating that the developed learning media is appropriate for use in educational settings. This finding aligns with the results of four user trials, which demonstrated an average score of 80.6 out of 100, categorized as 'good' performance. These findings suggest that Android-based crossword puzzles can be an effective tool for engaging students with modern Indonesian literature. Future research could explore the long-term impact of this approach on literature comprehension and retention among various student populations.
