Abstract

Cheese tea contains two main ingredients, tea, and dairy products. Green tea, black tea, and dairy products in the cheese tea have been shown to have beneficial effects on both body weight and blood glucose. However, there is no evidence that this benefit also applies to cheese tea. Moreover, cheese tea drinks which are sold in the market may be added with sugar to enhance flavor. This study aims to identify the effect of green tea and black tea in cheese tea on body weight and the risk of diabetes mellitus. The research was conducted with experiments on 32 male Swiss Webster mice which were divided into eight groups, namely the negative control (water), positive control (dextrose), and treatment group consisting of cheese green tea or cheese black tea groups with different compositions of sugar. The test drinks were administered once a day orally for 21 days. The results of this study showed that cheese green tea or cheese black tea affected blood glucose, but not body weight. Consumption of normal sugar cheese black tea and half sugar cheese black tea showed a significant increase in blood glucose compared to negative control, so there is a risk of developing diabetes mellitus. Meanwhile, consumption of unsweetened cheese tea and half-sugar cheese green tea did not increase blood glucose levels significantly compared to negative control. In conclusion,  consumption of cheese tea with green tea shows a better effect on blood glucose.

Abstract

It has been reported that peel of Punica granatum has antidyslipidemic activity. The aim of this research was to investigate the antidyslipidemic activity of Punica granatum leaf. The dried Punica granatum leaves were extracted with 96% ethanol. Rats were divided into several groups, which were normal, positive control, simvastatin at a dose of 10 mg/kg bw as reference group, and Punica granatum extract at a dose of 100 mg/kg. Before treatment, male Wistar rats were fed with high cholesterol chow for 3 months, and then plant extract was given for 4 weeks. Blood samples were collected at week 0, 12, 14, and 16 to measure the levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, and triglyceride. Furthermore, at the last day of extract treatment, the aorta was isolated and haematoxylin-eosin stained. Administration of ethanol leaf extract of Punica granatum at a dose of 100 mg/kg for 2 weeks significantly reduced the total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels up to 27.6% and 34.79%, respectively, compared to positive control group. After 4 weeks of extract treatment, the reduction of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol level were up to 59.9% and 75.05%, respectively. There was no effect of extract on HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride level. Furthermore, histological study showed that ethanol extract of P. granatum reduced aortic wall thickness significantly compared to untreated group. Punica granatum leaf is potential to be developed as an antidyslipidemic drug.

Abstract

A cough is a protective physiological mechanism that is useful for removing and clearing the respiratory tract from sputum and foreign particles that can cause infection. Treatments for cough disorders using medicinal plants were conducted because medicinal plants were widely known to have less side effects than synthetic drugs. Basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum L.) and red betel leaves (Piper crocatum Ruiz and Pav) have been used traditionally to treat a cough. The purpose of this study was to determine the mucolytic activity, and the effective concentration of the combination of basil and red betel leaves ethanol extract. The mucolytic activity was performed by measuring the decrease of viscosity of mucous from the cow intestinal mucosa. Mucolytic activity was evaluated upon treatment by each extract (concentration 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1%) and the combination of both. Results showed that ethanol extract of basil leaves or ethanol extract of red betel leaves could reduce viscosity of artificial sputum at the dose of 0.5% each. Moreover, the combination of these extracts synergistically decreases the viscosity. Combination of ethanol extract of basil leaves and red betel can be an alternative medicine for cough treatment.

Abstract

Abstract

Chromolaena odorata or Tekelan has been used traditionally to cope with diabetes mellitus, but the scientific evidence as antidiabetic agent has not been previously reported. Therefore, it is necessary to test the antidiabetic activity using ethanol extract of the tekelan leaves in male mice induced by alloxan. Mice were induced intravenously by alloxan dose of 55 mg/kg bw. After 7 days, mice were diabetic ( KGD 200 mg/dL ) and were grouped into 6 groups: negative control group (only treated with CMC - Na) , positive control group (glibenclamide 0.45 mg/kg bw) and the 4 other groups were given ethanol extract of Tekelan leaves at doses of 5 , 25 , 125 and 250 mg/kg bw. Dosage administered for 28 days and blood glucose levels was checked every 7 days using a glucotest. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variation at 95% confidence level. Ethanol extract of tekelan’s leaves  at doses of 5 , 25 , 125 and 250 mg/kg bw can lower blood levels  from day 7 to day 28 and was significantly different compared to the negative control group ( p 0.05). Ethanol extract of tekelan’s leaves at doses of 5 , 25 , 125 and 250 mg/kg bw showed antidiabetic activity in alloxan-induced mice.

Abstract

Myocardial infarction was local necrosis of heart tissue due to reduced oxygen supply because of theocclusion of coronary arteries. Fruits could reduce the risk of developing obesity and CVDs. Severalstudies have shown that apples had a strong cardioprotective effect. This study aimed to understandthe cardioprotective activity of two variants of apples, e.g., Fuji and Malang, on isoproterenol-inducedmale Wistar rats. The cardioprotective activity test was carried out for 14 days, all testing group exceptnegative control, was induced by isoproterenol. The results of testing cardioprotective activity showedthat Fuji Apple juice and Apel Malang juice had the same capability to inhibit increasing cardiacbiomarkers value (CK and CK-MB) with the highest inhibition was 79.56% and 73.08% for FujiApples, respectively, while for Apel Malang was 69.18% and 43.04%, respectively. The result of thecardiac histopathology examination showed that both Apples could prevent cardiac tissue damage. Alljuice Apple doses had the same cardioprotective activity.
