Abstract

Purpose –  This study aims to address the persistent challenge of low mathematics comprehension among students, often attributed to culturally irrelevant and formal approaches in teaching. Despite the potential of ethnomathematics as a culturally contextualized pedagogical approach, comprehensive evaluations of its effectiveness remain limited. This research seeks to fill this gap by conducting a meta-analysis to measure the effect size of ethnomathematics in improving mathematics education over the past decade. Methods/Design/Approach – A meta-analysis was conducted using data from 11 selected studies published between 2014 and 2024, which employed ethnomathematics in educational settings. The studies were screened based on rigorous inclusion criteria, focusing on experimental designs with control groups and sufficient statistical data for effect size calculation. Statistical analyses, including heterogeneity tests and publication bias assessments, were performed using JASP software. Findings – The meta-analysis revealed that ethnomathematics significantly enhances students' mathematics achievement, with effect sizes ranging from 0.561 to 2.698. The average effect size of 1.22 indicates a strong positive impact, demonstrating that ethnomathematics is a highly effective approach in various educational contexts, including Indonesia and Zimbabwe. The analysis also identified some heterogeneity across studies, suggesting that the effectiveness of ethnomathematics may be influenced by factors such as intervention design and population characteristics. Originality/Value – This study provides empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of ethnomathematics as a pedagogical approach that bridges cultural contexts and mathematical concepts, enriching the curriculum and enhancing students' understanding. It contributes to the growing body of literature by validating ethnomathematics as a viable strategy for improving mathematics education, particularly in culturally diverse settings. Practical Implications – The findings suggest that educators should consider integrating ethnomathematics into their teaching practices to make mathematics more relevant and engaging for students. The study also underscores the need for curriculum developers to incorporate cultural contexts into mathematics education, fostering inclusivity and relevance. Abstract

Purpose – This study explores the pedagogical approaches and curricula adopted by Islamic schools in Indonesia to prepare students as future leaders of a civil society, known as "Masyarakat Madani." Given the critical role of education in shaping future leaders, the study investigates how these schools integrate democratic values, social justice, and active citizenship into their educational practices. Methods/Design/Approach – Employing an exploratory case study design, this research examines selected Islamic schools renowned for fostering leadership qualities and civic engagement among students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. Participants included teachers, school principals, and alumni from five Islamic schools. Findings – The study identifies innovative pedagogical strategies that Islamic schools use to embed Masyarakat Madani principles in their curricula. These include integrating religious teachings with secular subjects and emphasizing collaborative learning and interactive discussions. Extracurricular activities such as debates, scouting, and student organizations play a significant role in developing leadership skills and active citizenship. However, challenges such as limited resources and insufficient government support were also noted. Originality/Value – This research contributes to the literature on Islamic education by highlighting the potential of Islamic schools in Indonesia to produce leaders who are oriented towards civil society. The study offers practical insights into how these schools can overcome existing challenges and enhance their role in fostering inclusive and sustainable education. Practical Implications – The findings suggest that Islamic schools could serve as models for integrating civic values into education. To optimize outcomes, increased financial support, teacher training, and community involvement are recommended. Effective use of technology in teaching could further strengthen the application of Masyarakat Madani values in daily life. Abstract

Purpose –  This study examines the quality of academic services at Universitas Sains Al-Qur’an (UNSIQ) Wonosobo, focusing on student satisfaction and identifying key service gaps based on the SERVQUAL model. The study aims to provide actionable recommendations for improving service quality by analyzing the gaps between student expectations and actual service delivery. Methods/Design/Approach – A quantitative approach was adopted, using a survey distributed to 952 students across six faculties. The SERVQUAL model informed the design of the questionnaire, which measured the importance and satisfaction of academic services through a 5-point Likert scale. Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) was applied to identify priority areas for improvement. Data validity and reliability were tested using SPSS. Findings – Significant gaps were found in UNSIQ’s academic services, particularly in the Tangibles dimension, where the largest gap (1.71) was in internet access. Other dimensions such as Reliability and Responsiveness also showed noticeable gaps. The findings indicate the urgent need for improvement in digital infrastructure to enhance student satisfaction. Originality/Value – This study adds to the literature on service quality in higher education by applying the SERVQUAL model in the context of an Indonesian university. The findings align with international studies on the importance of infrastructure and service quality in shaping student satisfaction and institutional loyalty. The study also provides actionable recommendations for UNSIQ, which can serve as a reference for similar institutions seeking to improve service quality. Practical Implications – The research suggests that UNSIQ should prioritize enhancing both physical and digital infrastructure to better meet student expectations. Implementing regular feedback mechanisms could further align services with student needs, thereby increasing satisfaction and loyalty. Abstract

Purpose – This study explores the relationship between entrepreneurial leadership, school culture, and teachers' creativity within public senior secondary schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The research aims to determine whether entrepreneurial leadership directly influences teacher creativity or whether its impact is mediated through the school culture. Methods/Design/Approach – A quantitative survey methodology was employed, collecting data from 136 teachers across multiple schools in Yogyakarta. Structural Equation Modelling Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) was used to analyze the relationships between the variables, including entrepreneurial leadership, school culture, and teachers' creativity. Findings – The results reveal that entrepreneurial leadership does not directly enhance teachers' creativity within the studied context. However, entrepreneurial leadership significantly contributes to a conducive school culture, which in turn positively impacts teachers' creativity. The study identifies school culture as a critical mediator, suggesting that the influence of entrepreneurial leadership on creativity is indirect and operates primarily through the development of a supportive environment. Originality/Value – This study provides new insights into the applicability of entrepreneurial leadership in educational settings, particularly in Indonesia. It challenges the assumption that entrepreneurial leadership directly fosters creativity and underscores the importance of school culture as a mediator. Practical Implications – The findings emphasize the importance of developing a supportive school culture to foster creativity among teachers. Educational leaders should focus on building environments that encourage innovation, collaboration, and growth. Policymakers can support this by integrating entrepreneurial leadership practices with strategies to cultivate a positive school culture, enhancing overall teacher creativity and effectiveness.
