Abstract

Abstract : Language, Pre School, Screening. Language skills are important for a child to be able to receive information and knowledge at school and in his home environment. This child's language skills should be an important concern of all elements involved with child education, including speech therapists in an effort to monitor the child's language development before entering school. This study aims to find out the language skills profile of pre-school children aged 4-6 years. Participants were recruited from Surakarta Kindergarten with a total of 36 children to participate in this study with an age range between 4-6 years. Screening is given to participants. It is the screening result that will reflect the receptive and expressive language profile of the child. There are six test items that can be used to screen the language skills of pre-school children:simple commands, expressive vocabulary, color names, answer questions, sentence memory, and digit memories. Internal correlation of simple command grain r = 0.791 (p = 0.000), expressive vocabulary grain r = 0.749 (p = 0.000), the item named color r = 0.739 (p = 0.000), the item answered r = 0.754 (p = 0.000) item memory sentence r = 0.879 (p = 0.000), and the item memory digit r = 0.816 (p = 0.000). The value of internal validity or correlation between items in the language development screen is good enough because all correlated items have correlations with low probability values.

Abstract

Background: Information on how students' academic performance is also determined by their language profile is limited. The use of picture memory exercises has never been provided by teachers in schools. This study aims to determine the effect of picture memory training on improving children's language skills. Methods: This study used an experimental design by giving treatment to children over a period of time and then measuring their language proficiency profile. The intervention was conducted using the picture-memory approach. The study design involved a single-group intervention with assessments conducted before and after the intervention. The target of the intervention is children with language impairment. Results: From the results of the Wilcoxon test, it was found that receptive language skills, especially receptive vocabulary, showed a p-value of 0.002. These results indicate that the picture memory intervention is able to improve receptive vocabulary skills. For expressive vocabulary, a p-value of 0.034 was found. The result also showed that the picture memory intervention was able to improve expressive vocabulary. Picture memory intervention resulted in changes in receptive vocabulary with an r-value of 0.44. Picture memory intervention resulted in changes in expressive vocabulary with an r-value of 0.29. Conclusion: The results of the analysis showed a difference in impact where the receptive vocabulary component was the component that changed more than the expressive vocabulary. However, the provision of a picture memory training intervention can be said to be able to improve language skills in general.

Abstract

Background: Communication needs in children with special needs (ABK) are absolute things to strive for as optimally as possible. One speech therapy approach in facilitating these needs is alternative & augmentative communication (AAC). The development of AAC offers great potential to improve the effectiveness of nonverbal CwSN (Children with Special Needs) communication. Based on surveys, AAC is most widely used for patients with non/minimal verbal such as ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders) or other conditions. Objective: this study aims to develop a mobile application-based AAC media innovation called Comm-Screen. Method: research is carried out quantitatively with tiered surveys and literature studies to design a prototype of the Comm-Screen application. The Comm-Screen application can display symbols (images) and output audio (sounds) that have been adapted to the culture and speech therapy interventions in Indonesia. The Comm-Screen application is also designed based on appropriate interventions and has been studied in the speech therapy profession to treat communication disorders in nonverbal CwSN. Results: From 54 respondents, 97% of them realized the importance of application-based AAC media in Indonesia as one of the preferred methods for learning communication for nonverbal CwSN. 97.7% of respondents stated that the Comm-Screen application prototype is effectively used as a medium for nonverbal CwSN communication intervention in Indonesia. Conclusion: There is hope from speech therapy practitioners for the advancement of AAC media with the Comm-Screen application that can meet the criteria and objectives of speech therapy interventions in Indonesia. Improvements and development of Comm-Screen applications are still needed as the need for future interventions increases. Keywords: AAC, Communication, Nonverbal, Speech therapy

Abstract

Background: Rapid naming allows someone to speak language well and correctly in social interactions. Language problems often occur in children with special needs, especially children with autism spectrum disorders. Objectives: To determine the relationship between rapid naming and the pragmatic abilities of children with autism spectrum disorders aged 3-8 years at PLDPI Surakarta. Methods: Descriptive correlational research design with a sample size of 30 people using total sampling. Results: Rapid naming is related to children's pragmatic abilities, because to be able to interact socially well, children must first master vocabulary and rapid naming. When a child's vocabulary increases and their rapid naming ability increases, the child is able to form phrases, these phrases will develop into sentences and then a series of sentences will form a story. The faster the duration produced, the better the child's rapid naming ability. Conclusion: The ability to analyze clients with rapid naming problems in children with autism spectrum disorders is apparently still lacking. There needs to be strategic steps from professional associations to be more precise in analyzing and implementing rapid naming of children with autism spectrum disorders. Abstract

Language disorders are problems in the areas of language form, language content and language use that are common in children. Children with developmental language disorders have difficulty in accessing and processing appropriate vocabulary, which affects their word retrieval skills. Word retrieval ability is influenced by linguistic factors but this ability can also be influenced by children's cognitive abilities. This study aims to determine the distribution of the role of cognitive control in word retrieval ability in children with developmental language disorders aged 4-6 years at RSPAL dr. Ramelan Surabaya. This quantitative research was conducted with a correlative test and with a cross-sectional approach to analyze the cause-and-effect relationship between the two variables. The number of samples used in this study was 35 children using total sampling data collection techniques. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and bivariate analysis using the Kendall Tau test.

Abstract

Dyslexia is a specific type of learning disability that has its origins in the functioning of the brain and cannot be explained by another diagnosis. It is characterized by reading difficulties that do not correspond to the child's age, intelligence or level of education. Children with learning disabilities generally experience concentration difficulties, memory problems and reading and writing difficulties. Dyslexic children face phonological difficulties: they have trouble recognizing letter sounds, associating letter names or symbols (graphemes) with the sounds they produce (phonetics), and dividing a word into its constituent sounds. This study therefore aims to determine the reading and writing profile of dyslexic students at SDN 2 Somoroto Ponorogo. This is qualitative research with an observational research design and a case study method of data collection. The sample used is 143 respondents and the sampling technique uses cluster sampling. The data analysis used was descriptive. The analysis identified 13 students with reading comprehension disorders, 2 students with dictation disorders and 1 student with dyslexia. The results indicate the need to pay particular attention to students with reading difficulties.

Abstract

Preschool age children are closely related to language and speech development. Mastery of speech clarity and awareness of letter sounds is one aspect of children's readiness to master letters in each vocabulary. Phonological skills affect the achievement of children's phonological awareness, without good phonological skills and phonological awareness skills, children can experience problems in their reading skills. Learning about the structure of language sounds can build phonological awareness skills necessary for reading success during the preschool years. Children who have speech sound production problems in phonology rules, tend to have difficulties in phonology awareness and reading. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between phonological ability and phonological awareness in preschool children in Karanganyar. The method used in this study is a quantitative method with correlational research and cross sectional. The sample was taken from 41 respondents with phonological problems with purposive sampling. Data was collected using test instrument. The results of the analysis using the Spearman Rank correlation test obtained a (p) value of 0.004 (p <0.05) which means that there is a relationship between phonological ability and phonological awareness ability in preschool children aged 4-6 years in Karanganyar. The magnitude of the correlation is indicated by the correlation coefficient (r) value of 0.444, meaning that it has a moderate positive correlation. This relationship can be concluded that phonological ability affects the achievement of phonological awareness ability in reading readiness of preschool children.

Abstract

Background: Reading ability in children aged 7-8 years is a critical foundation for academic and cognitive development. However, data indicates that 60% of Indonesian 2nd-grade students lack optimal reading fluency, facing challenges such as phonological difficulties, sentence structure comprehension, and limited literacy stimulation at home. Objectives: This study aims to analyze factors influencing reading ability in children aged 7-8 and identify effective remediation strategies. Methods: A systematic review was conducted, analyzing 5 selected articles from Google Scholar (2020–2025) using keywords related to reading fluency and school-age children. Results: Findings revealed that reading difficulties stem from internal (motivation, phonological awareness) and external factors (parental involvement, book access). Multisensory interventions, parental guidance, and balanced literacy methods significantly improved reading skills. Conclusion: Enhancing reading ability requires collaborative efforts among schools, families, and policies promoting inclusive literacy access.
