Abstract

Shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) can be cultivated across a wide range of altitudes, from lowlands to highlands; however, production in Indonesia is predominantly conducted on dryland areas. In response to the national program promoting shallot production expansion outside Java, the development of shallot cultivation in South Sumatra faces challenges due to extensive wetland conditions. Floating cultivation systems offer a potential alternative for optimizing wetland utilization. This study aimed to evaluate the adaptability and performance of several shallot varieties under floating cultivation with different rates of chicken manure application. Plant analysis was carried out at the Plant Physiology Laboratory, and the experiment was carried out from June to August 2024 at the Embung (research reservoir) and Experimental Garden, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya. A randomized block design with two factors and three replications was applied. The first factor consisted of four shallot varieties (Tajuk, Bauji, Batu Ijo, and Bima Brebes), while the second factor involved chicken manure rates of 0, 10, 20, and 30 t ha⁻¹. Data were analyzed using RStudio and presented in tables and figures. The results showed that the Bauji variety exhibited superior growth and yield compared to the other varieties. Increasing chicken manure application up to 20 t ha⁻¹ significantly improved shallot growth and productivity. It can be concluded that the Bauji variety, combined with 10 t ha⁻¹ chicken manure, is suitable for cultivation using a floating system in tropical wetlands.

Abstract

Weed is one of limiting factors in the direct-seeded rice cultivation. Cost incurred by farmers to control weeds is still quite high. Various techniques of weed control need to be evaluated to obtain the most effective weed control in tidal land. The experiment was conducted in tidal land fields in the Telang  Sari village Tanjung Lago Sub District Banyuasin District during November 2012−March 2013. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with planting density (K) as main plot and weeding methods (P) as sub plot. Five levels of planting density at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 kg rice seed/ha and four levels of weeding methods (manual weeding, dimethyl amine herbicide, penoxulam, and no weeding) were used in the experiment. The treatment was repeated 3 times and applied in 4×3m plot. Components of plant growth and yield of rice plants were measured and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS 17.0. The results showed that methods of weed control did not significantly affect plant height, plant biomass at 4 weeks after seeding and number of tillers, but significantly affect number of empty grain and filled grain per panicle. Both planting density and method of weed control significantly affect yield, but no significant interaction between treatments. Planting density did not significantly affect plant biomass from age 8 weeks after seeding. Yield of planting density at 80 kg seed/ha was not significantly different from the yield of 40−60 seed/ha. Method of weed control was significantly affecting the rice yield. Weed control can increase crop yields by 37.7%.

Abstract

Red rice was one species of rice in Indonesia that was superior in nutritional content and selling price compared to white rice but the productivity of red rice is still low. One of way to improved rice growth and productivity is fertilization red rice was one type of rice in Indonesia that contains high nutrition. This research aimed to observe the effects of  the combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the growth and yield of red rice (Oryza nivara L.). The research used a Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with 7 treatments. Each treatment had 3 replications and each experiment unit consisted of 3 plants so that there were 63 plants. The best treatment was compost of oil palm empty fruit bunch (125 g) + N, P, and K fertilizer 50%. The highest production was on oil palm empty fruit bunch compost (125 g) + Fertilizer N, P and K 50%,  it was equivalent to 5.49 ton/ha. In the red rice crop farming system it can be recommended to provide a combination of oil palm empty fruit bunch (125 g) compost and 50% N, P and K fertilizer to increase yields in the cultivation of red rice.
