Abstract

This research was conducted in Riau Province, aims to look at theinfluence of foreign investment, economic growth, the provincial minimum wage, and the average length of the school either simultaneously or partially to labor absorption in Riau province. Economic growth is always directed to improve the lives and well-being of society. Expansion of labor absorption needed to keep pace with the growth of young people who enter the labor market. The imbalance between labor force growth and job creation will lead to high unemployment. This research uses secondary data types. The method of analysis used in this research is descriptive quantitative method, as a simultaneously and partially analysis (multiple linear regression analysis using SPSS version 18.0). The results of the testing that has been done, simultaneous regression (F test) showed that all the independent variables have a significant effect on the dependent variable. The results of the partial regression test (t test) showed that only variable Average Length of School who have a significant effect on labor absorption in Riau province. While the variable Foreign Investment, Economic Growth and Provincial Minimum Wage has no significant effect on labor absorption in Riau province. The magnitude of the effect caused by the four independent variables together on the dependent variable was 82,9%, while the remaining 17,1% is influenced by other variables not examined in this research. Keywords : Foreign Investment, Economic Growth, The Provincial MinimumWage, Average Length of The School, and Labor Absorption

Abstract

Exposure to welding fumes in the workplace has been associated with decreasing renal function. We studied renal function parameters in men workers from heavy equipment manufacturer exposed to welding fumes. This study aimed to evaluate renal function status among worker exposed to welding fumes. A case-control design, random study, was conducted among welder (35 subjects) and nonwelder (35 subjects) with more than 1 years experience in the same job task in a heavy equipment manufacturer. All subjects were completed physical examination, informed consent, questionnaire and laboratory tests. Renal function was easured as creatinine serum using enzimatic method. Urinary heavy metals level was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Comparisson analysis between group was performed to determined median level for each variable. Linear regressionmodel was developed to predict renal function function parameter status urinary heavy metals level as variable. This study showed there were higher creatinine serum, chromium, iron, manganese and nickel in welder than non welder(p<0.05). After multivariate analysis, urinary nickel is a predictor for renal function status among welder. Exposure to welding fumes was significantly correlated with renal function status in welder. Nickel is the predictive variable for renal function. Although statistically significant but in clinical field needs carefully interpreting data.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: An organism’s lifespan is inevitably accompanied by the aging process, which involves functional decline, a steady increase of a plethora of chronic diseases, and ultimately death. Thus, it has been an ongoing dream of mankind to improve healthspan and extend life.CONTENT: There are only a few proposed aging interventions: caloric restriction, exercise, and the use of low-molecular-weight compounds, including spermidine, metformin, resveratrol, and rapamycin. Resveratrol, a constituent of red wine, has long been suspected to have cardioprotective effects. Interest in this compound has been renewed in recent years, first from its identification as a chemopreventive agent for skin cancer, and subsequently from reports that it activates sirtuin deacetylases and extends the lifespans of lower organisms. Resveratrol have been shown to prevent and reduce the severity of age-related diseases such as atherosclerosis, stroke, myocardial infarct, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, osteoarthritis, tumors and metabolic syndrome, along with their ability to extend lifespan.SUMMARY: The purpose of aging research is the identification of interventions that may avoid or ameliorate the ravages of time. In other words, the quest is for healthy aging, where improved longevity is coupled to a corresponding healthspan extension. It is only by extending the healthy human lifespan that we will truly meet the premise of the Roman poet Cicero: “No one is so old as to think that he may not live a year.”KEYWORDS: aging, caloric restriction, mimetic, healthspan, sirtuin activator

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a disease of genomic instability, evasion of immune cells, and adaptation of the tumor cells to the changing environment. Genetic heterogeneity caused by tumors and tumor microenvironmental factors forms the basis of aggressive behavior of some cancer cell populations.CONTENT: Cancers arise in self-renewing cell populations and that the resulting cancers, like their normal organ counterparts, are composed of hierarchically organized cell populations. Self – renewing “cancer stem cells” (CSC) maintain tumor growth and generate the diverse populations constituting the tumor bulk. CSCs in multiple tumor types have been demonstrated to be relatively resistant to radiation and chemotherapy. The clinical relevance of these studies has been supported by neoadjuvant breast cancer trials that demonstrated increases in the proportions of CSCs after therapy. The CSC hypothesis has tremendously important clinical implications.SUMMARY: In summary, a large and accumulating body of evidence supports the CSC hypothesis, which has important implications for cancer prevention and therapy. The ultimate test of this hypothesis will require clinical trials demonstrating that targeting of these pathways reduces cancer incidence and improves outcomes for patients with cancer.KEYWORDS: Somatic mutation, tumor heterogeneity, metastasis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, CSC niche

Abstract

Jajar legowo 4:1 cropping pattern has been adopted by rice farmers; however, there has been limited information on the comparison between internal and edge rows. In addition, the effects of timing and frequency of fertilizer applications on rice cultivated at riparian wetland also have to be understood. In this research, both single and split applications of fertilizer were employed. The single fertilizer applications were applied at 15 days after transplanting (DAT) (T1), 30 DAT (T2), 45 DAT (T3); and the split applications were 15+30 DAT (T4), 15+45 DAT (T5), 30+45 DAT (T6), and 15+30+45 DAT (T7). Results of this research indicated that crops in the edge rows produced higher leaf area index but those at internal rows produced higher dry weight biomass. Split fertilizer application to three times (T7) increased the weight of grains and number of filled spikelet but did not affect other shoot and root growth traits. Overall, fertilizer application increased leaf chlorophyll and nitrogen content. Jajar legowo 4:1 planting pattern and split fertilizer application to three times are recommended for increasing yield in rice cultivated at riparian wetlands.

Abstract

Background: The neurotrophins nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a family of polypeptides that play critical role during neuronal development, appear to mediate protective role on neurorepair in ischemic stroke. Naturally in adult brain neurorepair process consist of: angiogenesis, neurogenesis, and neuronal plasticity, it can also be stimulated by endogenous neurorepair. In this study we observed correlation between NGF and BDNF ischemic stroke patient’s onset: 7-30 and over 30 days. Methods: This is cross sectional study on 46 subjects aged 38 – 74 years old with ischemic stroke from The Indonesian Central Hospital of Army Gatot Subroto Jakarta. Diagnosis of ischemic stroke was made using clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by neurologist. Subjects were divided into 2 groups based on stroke onset: 7 – 30 days (Group A: 19 subjects) and > 30 days (Group B: 27 Subjects). Serum NGF levels were measured with ELISA method and BDNF levels were measured using multiplex method with Luminex Magpix. Results: Levels of NGF and BDNF were significantly different between onset group A and B (NGF p= 0.022, and BDNF p=0.008), with mean levels NGF in group A higher than group B, indicating that BDNF levels is lower in group A than group B. There was no significant correlation between NGF and BDNF levels in all groups. Conclusion: The variations in neurotrophic factor levels reflect an endogenous attempt at neuroprotection against biochemical and molecular changes after ischemic stroke. NGF represents an early marker of brain injury while BDNF recovery is most prominent during the first 14 days after onsite but continuous for more than 30 days. There is no significant correlation between NGF and BDNF in each group.

Abstract

Background: About 85% of strokes are ischemic strokes, caused by occlusion of cerebral artery that induced brain inflammation. A deep understanding of ischemic stroke mechanism will lead to better neurorestorative treatment. Objective: This study investigates the dynamics of human mesenchymal stem cells, fractalkine, and M1 microglia/macrophage in ischemic stroke patients. Results: We found the same fractalkine levels and M1 microglia/macrophage cells on patients with stroke onset 0 to 14 days, then decrease until 30 days of stroke onset. MSCs was increase 7 days after stroke onset, peaked by 14 days, then decreased until 30 days after stroke ischemic onset. Conclusions: This study found an interaction between microglia/macrophage, fractalkine, and MSCs on ischemic stroke patients, so therapeutic strategy could be developed.

Abstract

Background: Angiogenesis, is one of the neurorepair process which plays an important role after ischemic stroke incident. vascular-endothelial growth factor (VEGF), Angiopoietin-1 (ANG1) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) are the angiogenic factors involved in the process of angiogenesis. In this study we observed VEGF, ANG1 and FGF concentration to represent the angiogenesis process occurred in ischemic stroke patients with different onset time. Methods: This was a cross sectional study involving 63 ischemic stroke subjects aged 30 – 80 years old from The Central Hospital of the Army (RSPAD) Gatot Subroto Jakarta. Subjects were divided into 3 groups due to stroke onset time.: < than 7 days (Group A: 11 subjects), onset 7 – 30 days (Group B: 26 subjects) and > 30 days (Group C: 26 Subjects). VEGF, FGF and ANG1 serum levels were measured using multiplex method with luminex Magpix instrument. Results: VEGF, ANG1, and FGF were not significantly different between all groups. We did not find any significant correlation in all groups except FGF with ANG1 in group C. VEGF and ANG1 levels found to be highest in group B, and FGF levels in group A. Conclusions: VEGF, FGF and ANG1 increased soon after ischemic injury. FGF immediately increased in first week after onset and then decreased. VEGF and ANG1 levels reach their peak levels between 7-30 days after injury, showed that the optimal process of angiogenesis occurs in this period. There is no significant correlation between VEGF, FGF and ANG1 in all groups but we found a correlation between FGF and ANG1 in subjects with onset > 30 days after injury.
