Abstract

Abstract. The indekost are businesses that rent out rooms in a house for a certain period and with a set payment schedule. Boarding houses involve owners and tenants who have no family ties and occupy the same building or site. To support its role as a place to live, the need for privacy in boarding houses is very important. This is based on the assumption that, compared to other building functions, a dwelling has the highest level of privacy requirements. This study was conducted to take a closer look at the efforts of boarding houses to maintain privacy architecturally. The object of research is in the Darussalam and Batoh Regions which are educational areas that have many boarding houses around them. This study uses a qualitative descriptive methodology. Data were collected through observation. The result of the research shows that research objects with separate masses have good privacy qualities. Another important finding is the orientation of the building and the placement of openings affect the quality of privacy in buildings.

Abstract

Abstract. The emergence of various mosque designs today enriches the repertoire of Indonesian architecture. This is due to differences in the understanding of the community and precedents related to Islamic architecture. This phenomenon results in differing perceptions of the physical identity of mosques, including those in Banda Aceh. This research aims to understand the perceptions of UIN Ar-Raniry students regarding the physical identity of mosques in Banda Aceh. Data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires to 100 respondents. The research results indicate that respondents consider domes as the identity of a mosque. However, respondents do not see the presence of minarets and the use of ornaments as the identity of mosques in Banda Aceh. Despite the small percentages, another important finding is that a small number of respondents believe that the use of domes, ornaments, and minarets is not a necessity in mosque design.

Abstract

Architectural education has an essential role in shaping the mindset of students that impacts the ability of conceptualization in the design process. As the core subject, Architectural Design Studio (ADS) influences the students, particularly in terms of design. Being the architect candidate, the student is encouraged to elaborate on local-cultural values in their design, so that, the student will design a building that reflects a specific region and become the image of the place. Incorporating cultural values into the ADS assignment is one effective way to encourage students elaborate and design the built environment with a cultural approach. This research aims to see students’ competence in elaborating local-cultural values in their design and to assess the quality of cultural values implementation in ADS 5 assignment of Architecture Department Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh’s student. The research method is descriptive and qualitative. The participant in this study is a student enrolled in ADS 5 during the 2018/2019 semester. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: In order to support its function, the educational building is required to provide thermal comfort for the user. The thermal comfort affects the learning quality that occurs in the classroom. It is a challenge for the designed objects in a tropical region. Therefore, this design research aims to implement a tropical concept using the passive approach to optimize the building’s thermal comfort. The data is collected through literature review and site studies. This design research produces a designed object that implements the passive approaches through building design and layout, the use of sloping roof, the optimization of the cross-ventilation system, the use of exterior bright color, and outdoor space arrangement.

Abstract

This study is an extended research of previous studies on the mosque typology in Aceh Province, Indonesia. Although Aceh is well-known as a “mecca veranda” due to its proximity to Islam, the mosque typology research is still limited. The mosque holds significant value in the Muslim community. This study was conducted in Aceh’s Northern-Eastern route, which covers 90 (ninety) mosques located in 8 (eight) regencies. Using Baiturrahman Grand Mosque as the reference, as suggested in previous studies, the result indicates that the union-shaped mosque as a roof element is the predominant feature replicated by the mosques in Aceh’s Northern-Eastern route. Other elements, such as the column, the opening, and the roof ornamentation, are also replicated by some research objects insignificantly. Differing from the previous research, this study highlights that the minaret is a vital feature, although it is not applied in all research objects. Further research can be carried on toward broader areas with more diverse analytical factors such as time, socio-culture and technology.
