Abstract

Using Bourdieusian approach, this article explores the reflexive strategies of young jazz musicians in order to develop their musical practices in a contemporary urban context of Yogyakarta, a city of culture and activism in Indonesia. In detail, the reflexive strategy (Sweetman 2003; Threadgold Nilan 2009) will be explained as the manifestation of struggle in the field of cultural production (Bourdieu 1993). As an implication, young jazz musicians have to negotiate their musical practices with the reproduction of doxa and the representation of dominant agents in the jazz music field including the availability of public spaces in contemporary Yogyakarta. The resistance towards doxa will be explained based on the local narratives of the Yogyakarta jazz community as a mixture of the local and the trans-local scene (Bennett Peterson 2004). Furthermore, the reflexive strategy will be analysed through the lens of the youth culture perspective specifically as a manifestation of a mixture between post-subculture (Bennett 1999) and subculture (Blackman 2005). In their everyday musical practices, young jazz musicians produce their musical practices fluidly and flexibly as a lifestyle distinction as well as a form of everyday life resistance. In summary, this article shows the complexity of the musical processes of young jazz musicians in contemporary urban space of Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Abstract

This article tries to show the transformation of jazz music as a cultural product in Yogyakarta. This transformation is, according to Baumann, fluid, contradictory, and ambivalent. In the origin, this music became a symbol of resistance by the lower class, whereas in Indonesia jazz became the upper middle class consumption. However, in its development, some jazz musicians try to restore the original meaning by combining local elements and bring a hybrid genre of jazz, although this was not last long. The traditional elements can not survive to bring the spirit of resistance because this new genre of jazz eventually entered the music industry as a pop culture. Local elements in the end are commodified. The impact is then the reduction of the meaning of jazz and locality itself.

These young people creatively implemented long term strategy both inside and outside the field of education They accumulate various kind of capitals so that it can be converted in the future. All of the informants are from middle class background. The result shows they still get benefits from strategies and capital that they had previously created. As a young people from middle class background, they are optimist that they can reach their dream jobs in the future as long as they work hard, creative and struggle hard. The finding of this research supports the qualitative aspect to previous study made by Nilan (2012) Theoretically, it shows the compatibility between concept of long term strategy by Jones (2009), economic, social and cultural capital by Bourdieu (1998) and zigzag journeys by Nilan, Julian, and Germov (2007) as analytical concepts to understand youth transition in Indonesia.

Abstract

Independent Performance Practice in Extreme Metal Scene. Music performance, including extreme metal, is an integral part of music-based youth groups’ socio-cultural practices. The practice and meaning construction of music performance could not be considered as stagnant, but dynamic in its relationship with surrounding objective structure. In order to understand the meaning construction upon music performance, specifically within the extreme metal scene, this research focuses on the dynamics of independent music performance practice in Yogyakarta in the contemporary neoliberal era. This research was based on re-interpretation of ethnographic qualitative data. Yet, several challenges upon research data re-interpretation had been overcome by the insider status of the second author, and also triangulation interview with previously involved-informant. According to the re-interpretation of qualitative data, it can be argued that independent music performance is the reflection of the youth’s culture-based negotiations against the dominant discourse of commercial space by mainstream cultural industries as well as limited space of expression in the urban landscapes. This kind social networks-based of music performance, ranging from local to trans-local scene and constant experimentations of the scene habitus, show the manifestation of symbolic resistance. In this case, the symbolic resistance is not only based on social class, but also as a manifestation of spatial marginality. Thus, the independent music performance in this research can be a good example in order to keep the values of music idealism in the present and in the future.

Abstract

This paper focuses on activities of Korean Cultural Center Indonesia (KCCI) through the analysis of Korean government policies regarding public diplomacy by Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). KCC is affiliated organization under the Korean Culture and Information Service (KOCIS) under Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST). KCC is established in foreign countries to spread Korean culture and enhance national image through political communication with public. Since the beginning, KCCI has shown contradictory tendencies. On one hand, their mission is to show Korea's strength, but on the other hand, they organize cultural exchange programs that imply equality between the Korean side and its partners. By using a public diplomacy 3.0 theory which is based on cosmopolitanism to evaluate KCCI’s practices, this paper finds that practice of public diplomacy by KCCI is still consisted within public diplomacy 2.0 which is focus on enhancement of national image and creation of a favorable diplomatic environment due to holding hegemony in global soft power competition.
