Abstract

One of the key factors shaping the religious landscape in Indonesia is the strategic policies implemented by the New Order Government. This article examines how these policies influenced the geographic distribution of mosques and the subsequent religious dynamics in West Java. Additionally, it investigates the impact of government policies on the formation and development of religious organizations and Islamic communities across different regions, with a specific focus on West Java. This study employs a historical method by analyzing government archives, historical documents, and mosque establishment data. Spatial analysis is used to correlate mosque locations with centers of social, economic, and political activity. The findings indicate that the New Order government's mosque construction policy directly shaped the spatial distribution of mosques in West Java. The placement of mosques during the New Order era prioritized areas with concentrated Muslim population, aligning with the government's strategy to monitor religious organizations. By strategically placing mosques, which often serve as the center of life for Muslim communities, the New Order aimed to control Muslim activities. This article contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between state power, religion, and spatial politics in Indonesia.

Abstract

The socialization of religious moderation discourse in the digital space requires an effective strategy to engage the Indonesian populace. This study aims to understand the patterns and forms of religious moderation discourse in the Indonesian digital space from 2020 to 2023 and to assess the effectiveness of text mining techniques in this context. A mixed-method approach, combining digital humanities with quantitative text mining and qualitative discourse analysis, was employed to analyze the discourse on religious moderation. The findings indicate that the discourse is dominated by the term "Indonesia," highlighting the intertwining of religious moderation with nationalism. The prominence of "Indonesia" as a keyword suggests that the promotion of religious moderation values aligns closely with nationalistic sentiments. Additionally, the discourse is significantly influenced by political activities, with politicians' pragmatic values serving as a means to reach various segments of society, albeit not as a long-term strategy. To enhance the socialization of religious moderation, it is crucial to evaluate and refine current strategies. Analyzing the patterns and forms of this discourse can provide insights for more effective dissemination in the digital space. This evaluation will help in better promoting the values of religious moderation, ensuring they resonate with broader societal values and reach a wider audience.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the ideology underlying the operation of religion-based broadcasting institutions and how the process of commodification of da'wah occurs in West Java. Using a qualitative approach and case studies, this study examines three Broadcasting Institutions in Bandung, Cirebon, and Tasikmalaya, which were selected based on their active involvement in da'wah broadcasting and wide audience reach. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews, field observations, and analysis of the content of the da'wah program for six months. The results of the study show that da'wah has undergone a transformation from a spiritual function to a media product that is packaged according to market interests and dominant ideologies. Commodification occurs in three aspects: broadcast content, audiences as commodities and sources of funds, and media labor that acts as a capitalistic production apparatus. This research confirms that Broadcasting Institutions in West Java not only prioritize educational functions in da'wah, but also make religion an economic and ideological instrument to maintain its existence in the midst of competition in the broadcasting industry. These findings contribute to the study of the political economy of the media and become an important reference for policymakers in balancing commercial interests and da'wah functions in the media.

Abstract

The relationship between local traditions and Islamic family law primarily revolves around marriage, kinship, inheritance, and female’s roles within the family. However, this focus tends to emphasize gender roles, family authority, and individual rights, overlooking the intricate negotiations of values between Islamic traditions and local norms. This raises important questions about how these negotiations occur, the points of convergence, and the challenges faced in establishing a unique local Islamic family identity and legal framework. This study, which examines cases in Negeri Morella, Central Moluccas, aims to address these questions. The findings indicate that the negotiation process has been ongoing for a significant period, heavily influenced by the maternal-oriented Austronesian culture, which has contributed to a distinct Islamic identity within the community. This development has been shaped by the Sufism movement, which emphasizes human excellence (ihsān) at the family level. The negotiations occur at the intersection of customary values and Islamic marriage norms, significantly influenced by the clan (soa), which plays a crucial role as both a customary and religious authority. Although there is apparent harmony, the Morella community faces significant challenges, including tensions between orthodoxy and heterodoxy of religiosity, socio-cultural conflicts, the marginalization of women’s roles during spiritual transitions, and the predominance of Islamic law practices over customary law. This research provides valuable insights into the discussion surrounding the hybridity debate of Islamic family law, particularly regarding the perspectives of puritanical Muslims who often decline indigenous practices of Islamic law.
