Abstract

In this research, the researchers convince the readers about factors that affecting the effectiveness of Inter-dialectical accommodation among sellers-buyers. In this research, they prove how the theory of Giles cannot cover the discourse among sellers and buyers in terms of accommodation,   which is done in Central Lombok Nusa Tenggara Barat Province. The researchers describe the phenomenon of the inter-dialectical accommodation in the dialect of Meno-mene versus Meriak-meriku. The object of this research is the activities of sellers-buyers in doing the transaction in the market. The data in this research is taken through observation, recording, interview and note taking of the accommodation among sellers and buyers discourse in some markets in Praya Barat, Praya and Jonggat Sub-district. The researchers use the interpretative qualitative method with some data to reflect the condition of sellers versus buyers discourse in the market. The researchers find the preliminary data shows that the Giles Convergence Theory is un-effective or not applicable in the market where sellers and buyers of Meno-mene versus Meriak-meriku assemble and do a transaction. However, the research result shows the un-effectiveness or there is no effect of converging in bargaining. This research reveals that the convergence theory by Giles cannot be generalized into all part of the discourse, especially in the dialect of Meno-mene versus Meriak-meriku.

Abstract

Politeness has been considered as a core dimension of social interaction regardless of culture and ethnicity and is a predictor of good etique to prevent offensive reactions from the other interlocutor. The main purpose of this study is to address the politeness strategy use in Buginese Language with special reference to Anregurutta Pappandangan Maros of South Sulawesi. The present research has been set up to account for an ethnographic research and as such research instruments were strictly employed to comply with the nature of resarch design. These include field notes, direct observation, idepth interviews, and recordings. Data were mostly gathered from Anregurutta and the rest from the local people mostly by means of recording and interviews. Greater proportion of the recorded data were from Anregurutta whose daily language of interactional conversation is in Buginese. The recorded conversations were analyzed by means of descriptive analysis and interpretative paradigm. The analysis came up with a series of findings that partly confirm the validity of previous politeness framework, such as Brown and Levinson (1978), and Yassi (1996) with reference to Kinship (K), Distance (D) and Power (P). The finding deviates from the universality of politeness pattern that confirm use of bald-on strategy in non-kinship relation. It appears from the study, bald-on strategy was consistently used in kinship pattern, such as Anregurutta and his wife and daughter. (4.1.5 and 4.1.8). This research gap is most probably due to changes in interactional paradigm as a reult of religious values that has affected the way kindship family interacts. The second finding that has been neglected in the study of poliness of which contributes as the research gap is in reference to metalinguistic of politeness that count spritualism and Islamic suphism as generating motives of having to be polite to other people. The finding may contribute the the development of pragmatics with special reference to politeness strategy in non-european context since these aspects have been neglected in previous studies.

Abstract

The phenomenon of poor English language proficiency among Indonesian students suggests revisiting the instructional methods that have long been commonly used in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms. This long-lasting problem makes it essential for English practitioners to seek alternative approaches paving the ground for the EFL learners to reach more promising achievements. One of the approaches that may fill in this lacuna is Pair-Interaction Model (PIM). Therefore, the present study was an attempt to disclose the effects of PIM on fostering Indonesian EFL learners’ proficiency compared to the Grammar-Translation Method (GTM). For this purpose, a total of 90 first-year English students from three renowned universities in South Sulawesi, i.e. Hasanuddin University, Indonesian Moslem University situated in Makassar, and the Muhammadiyah University of Pare-Pare, were selected using a purposive sampling technique. The participants went through a pre-test, an intervention, and a post-test procedures. Findings revealed that the English proficiency of the participants who received instructions based on the principles and procedures of PIM significantly improved at the end of the interventions. This improvement was particularly seen in the participants’ grammar knowledge and speaking skills. The findings offered strong evidence that PIM can be implemented in the Indonesian classes to foster EFL learners’ proficiency. The study concludes by offering some implications for relevant stakeholders and opening up some avenues for further research.
