Abstract

Many studies have suggested that online learning that is so sudden and takes months is not effective. The unpreparedness of facilities and infrastructure becomes the main trigger in hindering the efficiency and effectiveness of the teaching and learning process. Parents and students miss face-to-face teaching and learning processes at school. This study aimed to investigate the readiness of parents and children for face-to-face learning during the “new normal” period. This study applied a quantitative design. The population in this study was the parents of students in Banggae, Majene, West Sulawesi. Samples were selected using the non-probability sampling technique; in this case, it was an accidental sampling. The instrument used to obtain data was a questionnaire. Data were then processed in three stages, namely editing, coding, and tabulating. Data were also analyzed with a descriptive analysis using a percentage formula. The results of this study indicated that parents were ready for face-to-face learning for their children at school. However, the children had not been able to get used to obeying the health protocols that have been established for the ‘new normal’ period.

Based on the issues raised in this study, the research entitled "The Effect of TPR (Total Physical Response) Method on Improving Learning Outcomes through Story Telling Activity English" is a method of Quasi Experimental Design research which in this study using a model that is two groups pretest-posttest design. The research design used in this study is a research model conducted by involving a comparison group ". The data were collected through a video recording of the meetings to identify the interruption use performed by the meeting participants and by giving the meeting participants the questionnaire containing questions concerning the use of the interruptions in the meetings. The data were then transcribed and extracted into several parts to be analysed. The data were also obtained by carrying out a participant observation by which the researcher obtained the meeting participants’ perceptions and their responses on the use of the interruptions during the meetings. This research indicates that the interruptions have a number of effects on the rapport orientations. There are two types of interruptions, i.e. competitive and cooperative interruptions. The interruption effects are primarily regarding to the enhancement and threats to the three interconnected rapport components which are: face, social rights and obligations, and interactional goals. The interruptions occurring also have several roles in the meetings which are closely related to the rapport management like clarifying and supporting main speakers’ points in the meetings, as the way to do relational work and back-channeling of the statement of the main speakers resulting in the type of rapport orientations applied by the meetings’ participants.

Abstract

The phenomenon of poor English language proficiency among Indonesian students suggests revisiting the instructional methods that have long been commonly used in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms. This long-lasting problem makes it essential for English practitioners to seek alternative approaches paving the ground for the EFL learners to reach more promising achievements. One of the approaches that may fill in this lacuna is Pair-Interaction Model (PIM). Therefore, the present study was an attempt to disclose the effects of PIM on fostering Indonesian EFL learners’ proficiency compared to the Grammar-Translation Method (GTM). For this purpose, a total of 90 first-year English students from three renowned universities in South Sulawesi, i.e. Hasanuddin University, Indonesian Moslem University situated in Makassar, and the Muhammadiyah University of Pare-Pare, were selected using a purposive sampling technique. The participants went through a pre-test, an intervention, and a post-test procedures. Findings revealed that the English proficiency of the participants who received instructions based on the principles and procedures of PIM significantly improved at the end of the interventions. This improvement was particularly seen in the participants’ grammar knowledge and speaking skills. The findings offered strong evidence that PIM can be implemented in the Indonesian classes to foster EFL learners’ proficiency. The study concludes by offering some implications for relevant stakeholders and opening up some avenues for further research.

Abstract

The fishing settlements in Karama Village have different characteristics from other settlements because this village still maintains Mandar culture in terms of physical and non-physical aspects such as weaving lipa 'saqbe activities, fisherman cultural rituals, sandeq races, and other cultural rituals that are carried out every year. But as it develops, its existence can experience a shift. This can happen when a community's economic activities affect other cultures, either on purpose or by accident. This study aims to find out how the cultural value of the community in Karama Village has changed, especially in terms of community economic activity. It will do this by looking at land-use change, figuring out how it has changed in Karama Village because of community economic activity and coming up with policy ideas for dealing with land-use change issues in Karama Village. The study results indicate that Karama Village's administration and land use have changed. For example, 74% of the buildings have switched from residential to commercial or industrial use. Eighteen percent of buildings got more prominent because of economic activity in the neighborhood. While 28% of buildings don't add to their building area, they use their public land for business. This change has big effects on the social and economic activities mentioned in the cultural element and related to the economy or people's ways of making a living.

Abstract

Proper diction relates to the choice of words used in conveying an idea. Diction in speaking becomes a difficulty for English teachers in classroom interactions. Especially for beginner English teachers, some of them are still unfamiliar with choosing the right/good vocabulary for describing and explaining material in teaching or using English to give some instructions. This study aimed at finding out the effect of diction used by the teachers during the interaction in the EFL class. This research applied qualitative research design and applied discourse analysis method specifically conversational analysis on the teachers’ utterances. Respondents who participated in this research were two English teachers and students respectively. The researchers collected the data through observation by recording teachers’ voices and interviews. This research found that the words or terms used by both teachers had an impact on the interaction, feedback and students’ interest in learning English.  Miscommunication, misunderstandings, as well as a few feedbacks occurred in the classroom.  There were a few learning aspects faced by both observed teachers to use proper word choice. They were a source of materials, teaching media and tools, as well as teacher training. All of them constrained those English teachers to employ the proper words during interaction in the classroom. Teachers are expected to be careful in choosing words or terms to establish communication between teachers and students.
