Abstract

In the midst of restrictions issue on the use of fossil fuels, the world began to move towards the use of renewable fuels. One such fuel is bio-ethanol. Production of bio-ethanol itself leaves vinasse wastetreatment problems with large discharge. There have been many ways to treat vinasse one of which is the burning of concentrated vinasse. Combustion process is a complex process in terms physical and chemical. Complex phenomenon will be difficult to be analyzed simultaneously and comprehensively when using conventional techniques. Simulation of combustion process based on CFD can be one such solution. In the case of vinasse as fuel and air as oxydizer the selected combustion model is a non-premixed combustion models with probability density function.

Abstract

Hydrogen itself could synthesized from fermentation method. Complex phenomenon will be difficult to be analyzed simultaneously and comprehensively when using conventional techniques. Optimation would be important since yield hydrogen from fermentation method was very small. Cause of few obstacles such as comprehensive phenomenon data not exsted mades this process very difficult to optimize. Simulation of hydrogen fermentation based on CFD would be one of the solution to retrieve phenomenon data comprehensively

Abstract

Drying phenomena of oil palm frond waste as agriculture waste was observed using simple batch oven dryer. The operation temperatures were 50, 80 and 120 °C. The sample of oil palm frond was weighed periodically every 30 minutes. Moisture content, shrinkage phenomena and drying kinetic model were investigated to the difference operation temperature. Experimental result exhibited that temperature influent significantly to the drying rate. The water transport controlled by diffuse mechanism. Shrinkage occurred in radial direction and decreased the size to almost 65% from initial size. In longitudinal direction almost is not change of size.

Abstract

Abstrak-Vinasse merupakan limbah dari industri gula dengan debit yang sangat besar sehingga harus diolah dengan berbagai metode. Salah satu alternatif metode yang dapat digunakan adalah pembakaran. Pembakaran merupakan reaksi kimia yang memproduksi panas dan dapat digunakan sebagai suplai energi untuk proses selanjutnya. Berdasarkan analisis proksimat dan ultimat, vinasse memiliki karakteristik yang hampir sama dengan batubara setelah mengalami proses evaporasi. Penelitian ini mempelajari perbandingan dari karakteristik pembakaran antara batubara dan vinasse sebagai bahan bakar yang dilihat dari aspek distribusi temperatur, distribusi spesies, dan vektor kecepatan. Proses pembakaran dijalankan dengan metode computational fluid dynamics (CFD) khususnya model pembakaran non-premix. Geometri dari ruang bakar yang digunakan adalah 84 x 5,2 m dengan kualitas ortogonal mesh yang digunakan mendekati 1 dan bentuk cell segiempat 100 persen. Simulasi pembakaran dijalankan dengan geometri 2D (dua dimensi) dengan udara sebagai oksidator. Hasil dari simulasi menunjukkan bahwa vinasse memiliki potensi untuk digunakan sebagai bahan bakar alternatif karena lebih cepat terbakar dibandingkan dengan batubara serta karakteristik lain yang sedikit berbeda. Kata kunci : pembakaran, vinasse, batubara, CFD, non-premix Abstract-Vinasse as a sugarcane waste has large amount of debit that must be treated through various methods. One of the methods is combustion. Combustion is a chemical reaction that produced heat which is can be used as energy supply for further process. Vinasse according to proxymate and ultimate analysis has characteristic similar to coal after being evaporated. This paper is studied about the comparassion of combustion characteristic between vinasse and coal as a fuel in terms of temperature distribution, species distribution, and velocity vector. Combustion process conducted with computational fluid dynamics method especially non-premix combustion model. The geometry of furnace is 84 m x 5.2 m with the orthogonal quality of mesh is close to 1 and 100 percent of quad cells. The simulation of combustion process conducted in 2D (two dimensions) with air as oxydizer. The results of the simulation shows that vinasse were very potential to use as a fuel with quicker combustion compared to coal but with slightly different characteristic. Keywords : Combustion, vinasse, coal, CFD, non-premix

Abstract

Rice husk is an agricultural waste which contains 50% cellulose, 25%-30% lignin and 15%-20% silica. It can be used as raw material of bio-oil. Bio-oil is liquid which produced by pyrolysis process. Bio-oil can be produced from the rice husk at 773 and 873 K. The main component of Bio-oil from rice husk pyrolysis at 773 and 873 K is phenolic compounds about 47.98% and 62.65%, respectively. It causes corrosive, low heating value, high acidity, high viscosity and unstable that causing an engine damage. The presence of phenolic compound decreases the quality of bio-oil. Therefore, it needs a process such as liquid-liquid extraction to reduce the phenolic compound using 80% methanol and 80% chloroform as a solvent. The extract and raffinate phase were analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The aim of this research determine the effect of temperature pyrolysis for the characterization of bio-oil, the stirring speed and the temperature of the extraction for the distribution coefficient and the yield of phenolic compound. The results showed that the characterization of bio-oil produced from rice husk pyrolysis at 773 and 873 K are densities 1,040 and 1,042 Kg/m3; viscosities 9.3488 and 9.5007 cSt; acid numbers 46.75 and 52.45 mg KOH/g; pH 2.5 and 3; flash points 426 and 423 K and heating values 3.229 and 3.339 MJ/kg, respectively. The highest distribution coefficient and yield were obtained at 323 K and a stirring speed of 250 rpm. The distribution coefficient of bio-oil produced by pyrolysis at 773 and 873 K is 1.504, and 1.528, respectively. The yields of bio-oil produced by pyrolysis at 773 and 873 K are 58.885%, and 48.429%, respectively.

Abstract

Bulu ayam dapat dimanfaatkan untuk mengurangi kandungan timbal dalam larutan artifisial. Larutan artifisial dikondisikan dengan menambahkan NaOH yang berfungsi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan adsorpsi timbal pada bulu ayam. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mendapatkan kondisi kesetimbangan dan kinetika adsorpsi logam Timbal dari larutan. Adsorpsi dilakukan dengan adsorben yaitu protein keratin yang terdapat dalam bulu ayam. Pembuatan adsorben dilakukan dengan cara bulu ayam dicuci kemudian dikeringkan dan dipotong kecil sampai 200 mesh. Bulu ayam yang halus direndam dengan aseton dan selanjutnya dikeringkan. Adsorben diaktifasi dengan NaOH dan dikarakterisasi menggunakan FTIR. Pada adsorpsi ini ditentukan oleh konsentrasi 20; 40; 60; 80; 100 ppm, suhu 25oC; 28oC; 31oC; 34oC selama waktu kontak adsorpsi 30; 60; 90; 120 menit. Jumlah timbal yang diserap oleh adsorben dapat dianalisis menggunakan AAS. Model kesetimbangan yang sesai adalah Freundlich sedangkan pada model kinetika yang sesuai adalah kinetika orde kedua.

Abstract

Proses pengadukan dengan menggunakan tangki berpengaduk (mechanically stirred vessel) telah banyak digunakan pada berbagai macam proses di industri kimia. Tujuan dari proses pengadukan ini bermacam-macam, mulai dari pencampuran material yang berbeda atau membuat suspensi solid sampai pada optimasi proses transfer massa dan energi. Proses pengadukan pada sistem padat-cair dapat memicu erosi pada apparatus tangki berpengaduk. Mesin dan peralatan yang beroperasi dengan sistem aliran padat cair dapat rusak karena erosi yang memicu rendahnya efisiensi operasi dan berkurangnya masa pakai alat dengan biaya pemeliharaan yang tinggi. Untuk sistem multifase dimana teknologi eksperimen secara visualisasi memiliki beberapa batasan, metode CFD memberikan beberapa keuntungan untuk menganalisis fenomena MI secara lebih komprehensif. Penelitian CFD banyak berkonsentrasi pada pendekatan berbasis LES dan SM untuk memodelkan variasi pola alir berfrekuensi rendah yang lebih baik dibandingkan eksperimen karena juga mampu menampilkan seluruh vektor kecepatan pada jangka waktu tertentu. Lebih jauh lagi, variabel lokal seperti kecepatan dan konsentrasi solid dapat ditampilkan visualisasinya per time step.
