Abstract

Abstract

Love is never considered as a transformative force. Love is generally perceived merely as an affective-emotional thing and personal relationship. Love does not have any practical implication in transforming society. Through Alain Badiou’s theory of love, it can be demonstrated that love has the power to impact the world. According to Badiou, philosophy is a truth procedure that is always occurring in the arena. Politics, science, art, and love are the arenas in which philosophy operates. Thus, it is possible to talk about love philosophically. Philosophy aims to change the world since love is one of the arenas where philosophy operates. Based on the descriptive analysis method in interpreting Alain Badiou’s works; Being and Event and In Praise of Love, it implies that love can generate a transformative action. The case of miscegenation marriage between Mildred Jetter, an African-Indigenous American, and Richard Loving, a white male, during the civil rights movement in the US, can illustrate the role of love in transforming the world. Alain Badiou’s theory of love explains that love can transcend personal dimensions, and it is not purely a romantic feeling and personal relationship but also a transformative force. Thus, this study brings a new perspective on love theoretically and practically because love is not merely an emotion but also a force for change with social dimensions in practicality.

Abstract

Abstract

Authors of scientific articles are faced with two opposing demands: objectivity and critical evaluation when expressing reality and truth. To date, no evaluative language mapping has been performed on Indonesian scientific articles which can accurately describe an article’s degree of objectivity so that it can be used as a tool for objectivizing and negotiating truth. Using the appraisal framework, this research aims to identify and examine these two opposing orientations as they appear in Indonesian scientific articles. The qualitative approach was applied to perform in-depth analysis of interpersonal functions in scientific articles. Data in the form of Indonesian scientific articles were obtained from top ten highest impact factor journals which are accredited and indexed by the Science and Technology Index (SINTA), representing ten different scientific disciplines. Results show that the authors could not completely avoid subjectivity. However, objectivity was clearly sought through five strategies: passivation, verbalization, prioritization of verbs before explicit expressions of affect, nominalization, and prioritization of nouns before explicit expressions of affect. Using the appraisal framework, the modality theory in Indonesian (Alwi 1992), and the lexical semantic theory (Cruse 1986) as bases for data analysis, this research offers a taxonomic evaluative language map of Indonesian scientific articles. This research used the appraisal framework (Martin and White, 2005), especially the attitude and graduation system, to define boundaries while combining objective and evaluative-critical language in three parameters: (1) distance between the personal evaluation source and the evaluative item; (2) the prominence of agentivity and a person’s involvement in the actualization of events; and (3) the root meaning of evaluative lexemes.

Abstract

A compound (kompositum) is a construction formed through word formation by combining two or more elements to create a new meaning. In Indonesian, compounds can be formed by combining several elements, one of which may be a nominal lexeme referring to a body part. Compound words can be distinguished from other word combinations—particularly syntactic phrases—based on grammatical and semantic criteria. Semantically, compounds can be analyzed according to the degree of idiomaticity in their meanings. Based on this premise, the present study aims to explain the idiomaticity of compounds in Indonesian that are formed by combining multiple elements, one of which is a body part lexeme, specifically compounds containing the lexeme hati(heart). This study on Indonesian compounds is a qualitative research project conducted through corpus analysis, utilizing the Indonesian Web as Corpus (IndonesianWac) available on the Sketch Engine corpus tool (http://www.sketchengine.co.uk/indonesian-wac/). The analysis of compound idiomaticity can be carried out using criteria such as lexical and grammatical variability, literality, compositionality versus non-compositionality, and predictability. Based on these criteria, a number of compounds containing the lexeme hati were identified and categorized as idiomatic compounds, semi-idiomatic compounds, and non-idiomatic compounds.

Abstract

The Paris Convention and Trademark Law Treaty (TLT) have emphasized the importance of distinctive characteristics of words as marks. The TRIPs have stated that trademarks are signs with distinguishing power and one of the elements are words. There are two doctrines related to the distinguishing power of words, namely the likelihood of confusion and dilution. There are also eight categories of words as trademarks with distinctive power that are recognized internationally. Indonesian trademark law has regulated distinctive characteristics of wordmarks in relation to words that cannot be registered as trademarks and words whose application for registration has been rejected. This is because Indonesia has ratified the Paris Convention, TRIPs, and TLT and harmonized its trademark law. However, there is an obligation for Indonesian citizens and its legal entities to use Indonesian words as trademarks. This article encompasses normative legal research using a statutory approach. Indonesian trademark law has accommodated the doctrine of likelihood of confusion as well as dilution. The law also implicitly recognizes five categories of wordmarks, which are: invented words, abbreviation including acronyms, arbitrary, suggestive, and generic. The obligation to use Indonesian words as trademarks limits the creation and use of words as trademarks. This norm appears to be formulated without a proper understanding of trademarks. Indonesia does not need norms like this. All trademark stakeholders must pay attention to this norm and apply for revocation.
