Abstract

This study explores the seasonal rainfall variation in Indonesia under normal conditions, excluding the influence of El-Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events. Monthly rainfall data is sourced from the CHIRPS dataset, and wind and atmospheric movement data are obtained from the ECMWF ERA-5 dataset. Identification of normal conditions relies on the ONI and DMI indices. Results reveal that the seasonal rainfall patterns during these normal conditions align with previous studies encompassing all atmospheric conditions. Indonesia typically witnesses one or two peaks in rainfall annually, notably in December-January-February (DJF), May-June (MJ), and March-April-May (MAM), consistent with established rainfall zone classifications in earlier research. A nuanced discrepancy emerges in the timing of the May-June peak, previously noted in June-July. The congruence in peak rainfall patterns during normal conditions, as observed in prior comprehensive research, implies a negligible influence of ENSO and IOD on the timing of seasonal rainfall peaks. Although ENSO and IOD may impact the amplitude of seasonal variation, particularly in Indonesia's eastern and western regions, they do not alter the temporal occurrence of rainfall peaks. Consequently, the timing of rainfall peaks in Indonesia predominantly reflects the combined influence of the Asian and Australian monsoons.

Abstract

This study discusses the influence of aerosols on lightning on Java Island using monthly and diurnal observation data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) for 16 years (1998 - 2013). Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) was obtained from The Modern Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2). Aerosol and lightning data are grouped into rainy (December-January-February) and dry (June-July-August) seasons and diurnal data grouped per 3 hours. The intensity of lightning strikes in the western part of Java Island, such as Jakarta and Banten, is higher than the eastern region, in accordance with the aerosol distribution pattern. The influence of aerosols and lightning in the rainy and dry seasons is relatively stable. However, influence of aerosols on lightning diurnally changes significantly. The strongest correlation between aerosol and lightning was recorded in the afternoon (r = 0.8) and evening (r = 0.9). Although the influence of aerosols on radiation reaches a saturation point during the day, the movement of land and sea breezes plays a dominant role. At night, the influence of aerosols on surface temperature is weakened due to the absence of solar radiation, so aerosols help the electrification of clouds through the formation of ice crystals.

Abstract

Nobita Hill, a tourist site in Padang City, is undergoing development as a tourist destination that offers a bird's-eye view of Padang City. Unfortunately, the hilly topography with steep slopes increases the risk of landslides in this area. In order to address the problem, the community service team from the Physics Department of Andalas University has carried out a six-month community service program from July to December 2022. It focused on disaster awareness education and used a qualitative approach. This activity aims to socialize disaster mitigation efforts, especially those related to landslides and earthquakes, considering that Padang City is also prone to earthquakes. The results of this activity showed an increase in the knowledge of the local community after the socialization, but repeated activities are needed to achieve optimal results. This ongoing activity is essential to ensure continuous improvement in the community's understanding of disaster mitigation and to support efforts to make Bukit Nobita a disaster-resilient area. Thus, this activity makes a positive contribution to shaping a safe, sustainable, and disaster-resilient tourism environment.

Abstract

We observed the effect of the La Niña phenomenon on the concentration of water vapor and ozone in the Indonesian region. This aims to the value of water vapor and ozone concentrations due to the La Niña phenomenon using Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) data from 2004-2022. The La Niña phenomenon was chosen because during La Niña, the sea surface temperature in Indonesia is warmer than normal, thus increasing the evaporation of sea water which result is an increase in the concentration of water vapor in the atmosphere. Concentration values are observed at altitudes of (25.7;30.5;35.3;40.1) km because there are trends in water vapor and ozone concentrations at these altitudes. The La Niña phenomenon is used to see anomalies in water vapor and ozone concentrations from their normal state. La Niña phenomenon is observed based on the ONI index. We found that during La Niña, the water vapor concentration increased from its normal state while the ozone concentration decreased from its normal state. These two concentration values were used to find trends using Mann Kendall and Sen's Slope methods. We found that the trend of water vapor concentration is statistically significant while the trend of ozone concentration is the opposite.

Abstract

Hydrometeorological disasters due to extreme weather events represent a significant threat to the security of life in Jambi Province. In order to develop effective strategies for mitigating this threat, it is essential to gain a comprehensive understanding of the underlying dynamics that give rise to such disasters. Despite the high frequency of these events, more research is needed on the complex relationship between trends in extreme indices and the frequency of hydrometeorological disasters in this region. This study addresses this gap by utilizing rainfall data from 2008 to 2020 from the Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) and hydrometeorological disaster data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). A range of extreme rainfall indices, including PRCPTOT, R85P, R95P, R99P, CWD, CDD, R1mm, R10mm, R20mm, R50mm, RX1Day, RX5Day, and SDII, were subjected to careful analysis concerning hydrometeorological disasters, including floods, landslides, tornadoes, droughts, and forest fires. Notable results indicate a significant increasing trend (p < 0.05) for the CWD index, while decreasing trends are observed for R85P, R95P, R99P, R50mm, RX1Day, RX5Day, and SDII. PRCPTOT and R20mm show decreasing trends, and CDD shows an increasing trend, although it is not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Subsequently, there was a significant increase in landslides and tornadoes, while forest fires and floods showed an insignificant increase (p > 0.05). Drought exhibited a significant decreasing trend in Jambi. Correlation analysis revealed the complex relationship between extreme weather indices and hydrometeorological disasters. The positive correlations observed between most extreme rainfall indices and floods and landslides, except for CDD, indicate that extreme rainfall is the primary cause of these disasters in Jambi. The correlation is particularly pronounced in areas with mountainous topography, where landslides are more prevalent. The positive correlations observed between CDD and droughts and forest fires suggest that periods of reduced rainfall and increased drought contribute to these disasters. This correlation is more robust in districts with extensive peatlands. The results provide valuable insights into the vulnerability of Jambi Province to hydrometeorological disasters and highlight the importance of understanding regional variations in extreme weather events. These findings improve our understanding of the interactions between climate indices and disasters and provide the basis for informed risk reduction and adaptation strategies in changing climatic conditions. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-08-05-012 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

In The Equatorial Atmosphere (CPEA)-I (10 April - 9 Mei 2004).
