Abstract

Designing a test is an uneasy task. It is proven by the fact that many teachers find difficulties in designing a good test. The present article attempts to review the English school exam in Indonesia and present an example of the test design of a midterm reading test for junior high school students in Semarang. To this end, firstly, a sample of test script of the school exam for JHS students in Semarang in the academic year 2017/2018 was reviewed. The review of the test shows that creating a good quality of test items still become a concern for English teachers as they made some grammatical errors. Consecutively, a midterm reading test was also designed and administered in a junior high school in Semarang, Central Java. Then, the test designed was evaluated by considering the validity, reliability, and practicality as suggested by (Brown Abeywickrama, 2010).  The administration of the test and evaluation show some weaknesses; therefore, the suggestions for the betterment of the test design are also made, such as revising some test items with a very low facility index and negative discrimination index. This study implicates pedagogically the teachers to train students on how to summarize and paraphrase since these skills underrepresented.

Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACTGrounded in the Freire’s (1971) critical pedagogy premise stating that education should impact social change and reading words should be followed by reading the world, this study explores the experiences of English language teachers who teach English reading classes with the critical pedagogy approach. We employed qualitative research with a case study as the research design to dig into the depth of teachers’ perspectives. The data were garnered through in-depth interviews with four lecturers and analyzed following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The present study revealed that teachers’ understanding of critical pedagogy is not explicitly stated by defining or explaining the notion of critical pedagogy. However, some stages and components of critical pedagogy can be identified, showing that to a certain degree the teachers implement critical pedagogy in their reading classes.ABSTRAKBerdasarkan premis pedagogi kritis Freire (1971) yang menyatakan bahwa pendidikan harus berdampak pada perubahan sosial dan membaca kata-kata harus diikuti dengan membaca dunia, penelitian ini mengeksplorasi pengalaman guru bahasa Inggris yang mengajar membaca bahasa Inggris dengan pendekatan pedagogi kritis. How to Cite: Waliyadin, Anasy, Z., Nahartini, D. Abstract

The apology is one of the speech acts that language functions cover. Considering that students must have pragmatic competence to use language appropriately in context, this research looked at apologies in an Indonesian senior high school ELT textbook, as well as the strategies used by teachers to teach apology. This study employed a qualitative approach which involves a textbook analysis and a semi-structured interview of the teacher’s teaching strategies to collect the data. The collected data then were classified, transferred into tables, and analyzed using Limberg (2015)’s principles of teaching pragmatics. The findings of this study show that the textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris Kelas XII covers some parts of Limberg’s principles of teaching pragmatics of apology. There is one principle that is not covered, namely, the principle of drawing a comparison. However, the findings of this study expose that the teacher’s teaching strategies cover all Limberg’s principles of teaching pragmatics of apology. Therefore, English teachers and institutions are expected to take into account the materials used to teach apology to students to raise students’ pragmatic competence.

Abstract

This research changed students' low critical mathematical thinking abilities. To overcome this problem, researchers developed comic-based teaching materials to enhance college students' critical mathematical thinking skills. This study aims to supply comic-based coaching materials that are legitimate and practical. This research uses the R&D method with a 4D development model. This research design uses data collection techniques, validation sheets, and practicality questionnaire sheets. The subjects in this research were 20 students in class V. From the research results, it was found that the media expert's score was 96.66%, which was categorized as very appropriate. The linguist scored 88% in the very appropriate category, the material expert was 80% in the proper category, and the teacher practitioner was 92% in the very appropriate category. For the practicality of comic-based teaching materials, the teacher's practicality score was 96%, and the students' practicality score was 87.7%, categorized as very practical. Therefore, comic-based teaching materials can be used as a solution for educators to improve critical mathematical thinking.
