Abstract

Dental and oral health is a part of body health that cannot be separated from one another because it will affect the overall health of the body. Teeth are one part of the body that functions to chew, speak and maintain the shape of the face, so it is important to maintain healthy teeth as early as possible so they can last a long time in the oral cavity. Several epidemiological studies have shown that oral hygiene and gingival status of various degrees of severity are commonly found in children and adolescents. Teenagers often experience health problems, one of which is dental and oral hygiene problems. School students are the right group for health promotion efforts. This educational activity aims to increase knowledge about dental and oral health and to change individual and/or community behavior in the health sector. The method implemented in this educational activity is to use the online method which is carried out with 57 students at the UNP Padang Laboratory Development High School. The results showed an increase in the mean score from the pretest results of 6.13 and the posttest average score of 8.32, so it can be concluded that educational activities through online media can increase the knowledge of SMA Development Laboratory UNP Padang students in maintaining oral health from an early age. Furthermore, counseling activities using this method can be an option for health workers, especially dentists so that they can reach more remote areas.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is a prevalent oral health issue globally, and Staphylococcus aureus is a key pathogen involved in its development. Strawberry fruits, known for their medicinal properties, contain bioactive compounds with potential antibacterial effects. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory potential of strawberry extract against S. aureus. Methods: A laboratory experimental study was conducted using a post-test-only control group design. Varying concentrations (10%, 15%, 20%, 25%) of strawberry fruit extract were prepared. The antibacterial activity was assessed using the disc diffusion method against S. aureus. Distilled water served as a negative control. The diameter of inhibition zones was measured after 24 hours of incubation at 37°C. Results: Strawberry fruit extract demonstrated inhibitory effects on the growth of S. aureus at concentrations of 15%, 20%, and 25%. The average inhibition zone diameters were 0.54 mm, 2.30 mm, and 3.00 mm, respectively. No inhibition was observed at 10% concentration or with the distilled water control. Conclusion: Strawberry fruit extract exhibits potential as an antibacterial agent against S. aureus, suggesting its possible application in dental caries prevention. Further research is needed to explore its clinical efficacy and identify the specific bioactive compounds responsible for the observed antibacterial activity.

Abstract

Phosphorus is a vital mineral required for the proper mineralization of bones and teeth, particularly during childhood development. Deficiency in phosphorus intake can lead to delayed dental development, including the eruption of permanent teeth, which may result in oral health complications such as malocclusion and increased risk of dental caries. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 50 children from SD N 15 Koto Lalang, Padang City. Participants were categorized into two groups based on the eruption status of their permanent canines: normal eruption and delayed eruption. Phosphorus intake was measured through dietary surveys, and statistical analysis, including the Mann-Whitney test, was applied to assess the relationship between phosphorus intake and tooth eruption timing. The median phosphorus intake in the normal eruption group was 597.30 mg, significantly higher than the 440.00 mg observed in the delayed eruption group (p = 0.000). The interquartile range (IQR) for the delayed group was narrower, suggesting a more uniform phosphorus deficiency. In conclusion, phosphorus deficiency is a significant factor contributing to delayed eruption of permanent teeth in children. Ensuring adequate phosphorus intake through proper nutrition is crucial for timely dental development and the prevention of long-term oral health issues. Further studies should explore the interaction of phosphorus with other micronutrients to provide a comprehensive understanding of its role in dental health.

Abstract

Introduction: Diseases or lesions of the oral mucosa are a significant aspect of oral diseases that greatly affect the patients experiencing them. Among all oral mucosal diseases, there are several conditions categorized as normal variations in the anatomical structure of the oral mucosa. Normal variations in the oral cavity are clinical presentations that are unusual. Non-pathogenic conditions, namely clinical variations in the form of uncommon organ structures with specific characteristics, fall into the category of normal and are not pathological conditions. Material and Method: This study employed observational descriptive research to examine the presentation of normal variations in the oral mucosa of patients at the oral disease clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry, Andalas University. Univariate analysis was conducted in this research to observe the distribution of normal variations in the oral mucosa. Results and Discussion: The number of samples in this study was 620 patient data, with the prevalence of normal variations in the oral mucosa found to include cheek biting, fordyce granule, linea alba, leukoderma, and irritation fibroma. The highest prevalence was cheek biting at 52.6%, while the lowest was irritation fibroma at 1.8%. Conclusion: Cheek biting is the most common normal variation in the oral mucosa observed at the oral disease clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry, Andalas University.
