Abstract

QS. al-Baqarah: 62 by some Muslim scholars is used to justify that adherents of all religions in this world will get salvation and go to paradise. Salvation in the hereafter, according to them, is not required to believe in the Prophet Muhammad. This article aimed to re-examine that interpretation that is contrary to the belief of the majority of Muslims, in which one aspect of faith that will save people is a belief in the messengers, including a belief in the Prophet Muhammad. The reinterpretation of QS. al-Baqarah: 62 in this study employed the interpretation method of Yûsuf al-Qaraḍâwî in his book entitled Kayfa Nata‘âmal Ma‘ al-Qur’ân al-‘Az}îm. This article is a library based-study by using content analysis and descriptive-analytic. The result revealed that QS. al-Baqarah: 62 actually deals with the earlier peoples before the Prophet Muhammad. Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and do good deeds are promised a reward from Allah SWT

Abstract

Human rights enforcement, especially in the aspect of religious freedom in Indonesia, is still unsolved. Violence involving conflicts among religious followers still occurs. It shows that the space for religious freedom is still a critical problem in this country. Indonesia is a multi-cultural country, but a narrow understanding makes plurality the root of hatred and anger. Indeed, diversity will contribute to national development, but on the other hand, it can also trigger horizontal conflicts. This article will unravel the problems that cause religious intolerance and how to overcome the mushrooming of radicalism. This article is qualitative-based research. The data were collected from the library study. The acts of violence caused by wrong religious understanding were analyzed from the Human Rights enforcement, Islamic theology, and socio-juridical viewpoints so that alternative solutions for acts of violence occurring in society, especially among Muslims, can be settled. This study finds that tolerance has its foundations in both religion and positive law in Indonesia. Therefore, any intolerance has no basis, and it will only worsen the image of Islam and make people unsympathetic to religion.

Abstract

Abstract: Since the Reformation Era, various Islamic organizations or groups have emerged in Indonesia with different ideologies and movement models, such as Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI), the Indonesian Mujahidin Council (MMI), the Indonesian Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), and Jemaah Islamiyah. Most Indonesian Muslims do not warmly welcome their presence as the spirit of their struggle is not appropriate with the character and culture of the Indonesian people. They often use violence and even terror in struggling for Islam with the reason of amr ma’ruf nahi munkar (enjoining good and forbidding evil). So it is not surprising that the government recently dissolved the HTI and FPI. By using a qualitative approach, this study aims to uncover their ideology and movement model and the ideologies that influence them. From the data obtained from various related literature such as textbooks, journals, and the web, this study finds that these Islamic groups are ideologically influenced by trans-national Islamic groups with fundamentalism and even radicalism characters. They disagree with the Indonesian government system, which is considered secular and incompatible with Islamic values. They often use violence and terror to enforce Islamic shari'ah and even change the NKRI system with the system of Khilafat Islamiyah (Islamic caliphate). Keywords: Radicalist, fundamentalist, Islamic caliphate, shari'ah. Kata kunci: Radikalisme, fundamentalisme, khilafah Islamiyah, syari'at Islam.

Abstract

This research is conducted to comprehend the typology of living Hadith in Indonesia based on the ritual-based Hadith in Sidoadi’s society. The ritual-based Hadith called Bari’an ritual. the Sidodadi's people have been trying to preserve the Bari'an ritual. This ritual is related to a major change in the history of the Dudak village, which is now called Sidodadi. This study focuses on how the views of the Sidodadi's people on the Bari'an ritual, the ritual forms of Bari'an  in Sidodadi, the meanings of the present Bari'an rituals, and its relevance to the values of the Hadith. This is a socio-cultural study with a phenomenological analysis approach. The problem is answered based on qualitative data with the technique of interpretation of emic and ethics. With such emic and ethical interpretation techniques, it can be seen that the forms of the Bari'an ritual in Sidodadi historically have shifted including its motive, meaning, as well as values. The shift is caused by a transformation of the beliefs of Sidodadi's people from Islam 'Kejawen' (Javanese Islam) filled with myths, superstition, and sesaji, turned into Popular Islam filled with values of Hadith.

Abstract

One of the ways to get closer to God is to escape from the world's temptations by going on a journey (safar, mlaku). This study aims to uncover the meaning of spiritual well-being in individuals who perform tirakat mlaku. This article is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The subject of this study is the congregation (jemaat) of Sheikh Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud Sukabumi, who perform tirakat mlaku. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and using interpretive phenomenological analysis. This study found that there are three meanings for those who undergo tirakat mlaku: (1) quality of life, (2) social well-being, and (3) environment well-being. This study also reveals that spiritual well-being is an interrelationship between one's relationship with God, subjective well-being, and socio-environment well-being. This article provides a new perspective on the concept of tirakat as a path to closeness to God, directly affecting the quality of life, social life, and environmental protection.Contribution: The results of this study can be used as a guide in constructing the dimension of spiritual well-being in the context of Islamic psychological theory. While practically, it provides an outlook of the meanings of divinity that are implemented in social activities.

Abstract

Spiritual phenomena are an integral part of Indonesian society. However, some think these phenomena are part of tariqa practice. This study aims to reveal the criteria and characteristics of the tariqa, especially the mu'tabaroh tariqa (notable Sufi order), through the perspective of one of the tariqa association organisations in Indonesia, namely Jam'iyyah Ahlith Thoriqoh al-Mu'tabaroh an-Nahdliyyah (JATMAN). This study is qualitative research in which the data were collected from library research. This study found that the tariqa is a path, school or order of Sufism. The tariqa is a path to get closer to Allah SWT under the guidance of a murshid (spiritual teacher). The tariqa can be categorised as mu'tabaroh if it has a connected chain (sanad) to the Prophet Muhammad and its teachings do not conflict with Islamic law. In addition, as an organisation, JATMAN, through the Ifta' Council, is competent to determine whether a tariqa can be considered mu'tabaroh or not.

Abstract

The Qur'an states that human beings were created with a duty to prosper the earth; one of which is by preserving the environment and reforestation. This study aims to unveil the hadiths on reforestation by employing the Maqāṣid Sharī‘ah approach of Yūsuf al-Qaraḍāwī. This paper is a qualitative study with content analysis and descriptive-analytical approaches. This study found that the hadiths about the recommendation for plantation and reforestation must be interpreted generally, not restricted to certain conditions. Thus the command for reforestation applies in general, not limited to certain conditions and places. Reforestation must be carried out anywhere and anytime until the end of the day. While the proper meaning of the hadith, which contains the threat of hell for cutting down the Bidara tree, is that such a threat is addressed or people who cut down the tree in open space where it serves as a shelter for travellers and animal habitats. In addition, the hadith should also be understood to a more general meaning, particularly for the Bidara tree and all trees with the same function as shelters.

Abstract

Sufism and ṭarīqa are often associated with awful and negative stigmas for generating laziness, stagnancy, and surrender to misery. Sheikh Fathurahman tackles these assumptions through the teachings of the Idrisiyya Order. This study is qualitative based research. The primary data were collected from books by Sheikh Fathurahman and his lectures uploaded on Youtube, observations, Focus Group Discussions, and direct and indirect interviews. This study found that Sufi revivalism, as initiated by Sheikh Fathurahman, has led to a positive movement. The presence of the ṭarīqa, especially the Idrisiyya Order, amid society has contributed to crucial social changes and innovations in some sectors, such as economics, education, and other social programs. Contribution: This study will give a new insight into the central teaching of taṣawwuf, such as zuhd and tawakkal as reinterpreted by Sheikh Fathurahman under the Idrisiyya Order so that ṭarīqa becomes the locomotive of social change amid Muslim society in Indonesia.

Abstract

Near-death experiences (NDEs) are closely related to emotional and spiritual dimensions, even though they are subjective. This study aims to reveal the mystical experiences of individuals suffering from COVID-19 after NDEs. This article is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. With purposive sampling, the data were collected from individuals suffering from COVID-19 who experienced NDEs but recovered. The data were then analysed with interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). This study reveals that when individuals experience NDEs, they no longer see and feel their physical body but their spirit or soul. They also have mystical experiences, such as being visited and communicating with specific religious figures and even the spirits of people who had died. After NDEs, a comprehensive reconstruction occurs regarding their personal beliefs and values regarding life and death, especially their relationship with God.Contribution: This study contributes to revealing the mystical experience of people after near-death experience (NDE). This study can be a recommendation, counselling, therapy and various psychological and religious interventions for individuals who experience NDE to accept their death more easily.
