Abstract

Background: Medical students in private schools are mostly high school graduates, ages are around 17 to 18. They were so diverse, the background of the former school, culture, motivation, and study skills. Students from rural might have different motivation and study skills from students of big cities. To give autonomy support to the new medical students, we planned the motivational workshop and study skills mentoring. We assume those will increase their motivation.Aims: To know - What types of motivation do first-year medical students have? Secondly, to evaluate - Whether motivational workshops and mentoring about study strategies can help to increase students’ autonomous motivation based on the Self-Determination Theory. Methods: A mixed-methods research was conducted in this study. The first step was the quantitative study using the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) to measure the students’ pre and post intervention motivation and the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) post intervention, then followed by the qualitative study to capture students’ responses and reflections with convenience sample. Results: The autonomous motivation was high among the male students, home-schooling, does not belong to medical profession family, and students from lower middle income. Quantitative data showed that this approach significantly decreased the amotivation scale of participants (p=0.025). Descriptively, there was an increase in the autonomous motivation of participants after following motivational workshop and study strategies mentoring. Conclusion: Motivational workshops and mentoring on study strategies were found to be valuable, interesting, and facilitate autonomous motivation. Results showed that those activities increased the students’ autonomous motivation.

Abstract

E-cigarettes are gaining increasing popularity worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there are nearly one billion (984 million) smokers globally, accounting for approximately one-fifth of the adult population. The use of e-cigarettes in Southeast Asian countries has also seen a rise since 2015, although at a slower pace compared to high-income countries. Presently, Indonesia has the highest prevalence of e-cigarette use in Southeast Asia at 11.8%, while Thailand has the lowest prevalence at 3.3%. Testes play a crucial role in male reproductive function. Decreased testicular size can lead to disruptions in testicular function, resulting in infertility. Testicular size is significantly correlated with sperm density in both fertile and infertile men. The objective of this study is to investigate changes in testicular weight due to exposure to conventional cigarettes, nicotine-containing, and nicotine-free e-cigarettes. This experimental research utilizes a post-test control only design. The sample comprises 24 male Wistar rats divided into four groups: Group A (control), Group B (exposed to conventional cigarettes), Group C (exposed to nicotine e-cigarettes), and Group D (exposed to non-nicotine e-cigarettes). Exposure to cigarettes lasts for 30 days, after which the rats undergo surgery to remove their testes. The research findings indicate a decrease in testicular size due to exposure to conventional cigarettes, nicotine e-cigarettes, and non-nicotine e-cigarettes. There is no significant difference observed among the three types of exposure. In conclusion, conventional cigarettes, nicotine-containing, and nicotine-free e-cigarettes elicit similar effects in reducing testicular weight in male Wistar rats.

Abstract

Abstract

Physical and mental changes in the elderly can have an impact on the health of the elderly. Dementia is one of the main health problems experienced by the elderly, characterized by decreased cognitive function that impacts quality of life and independence. Lack of public understanding of early detection, treatment, and prevention of dementia increases the risk of delayed treatment and worsens the condition of the elderly. This community service aims to increase knowledge and awareness of dementia through interactive seminars for the elderly and their families at GKI Sepanjang Sidoarjo. The results of the interactive seminar showed that the percentage of correct answers in the post-test increased by 13.14% from the pre-test. As many as five out of 10 questions with correct answers amounted to more than 50% of the total respondents. Judging from the answers obtained, program participants were not familiar with examples of cognitive functions and the definition of Hoarding Syndrome. At the end of this activity, there was an increase in participants' understanding of improving the health of the elderly, but there were still questions that participants could not answer. In conclusion, this activity succeeded in increasing health literacy related to dementia among the elderly and their families at GKI Sepanjang Sidoarjo, but other educational methods or media are needed to further increase the knowledge of the elderly regarding dementia.

Abstract

The ability to work with technology is essential for our future doctor. In the era of digitalization, doctor patient consultation is changing. Therefore, it is important for students to develop specific skills early in their medical education. To meet future competency demands and support sustainable learning, we designed 16 weeks The Learning Literacy and Technology course. Which is consists of soft-skills facilitation and technology and AI modules for the first semester medical students. This study used the Kirpatrick Four-Level of Evaluation Model to assess the impact of the course. This model is widely used to evaluate the program on four levels: Reaction, Learning, Behaviour, and Result. The aim of the study is to measure the evaluation outcome of this course in enhancing soft skills for learning and the use of technology in both medical education and future careers. A mixed method descriptive cross-sectional designs was used, incorporating quantitative data from the surveys and qualitative insights from guided interviews. Finding shows that quantiatively, students scored higher than 4 out of 5 across all levels. Qualitatively, similar themes emerged from the interview data. Overall, the mixed-method study indicates that the course effectively meets all four levels of the Kirkpatrick evaluation model.
