Abstract

There is a decrease in the physiological function of the body in the elderly which causes the elderly to be more susceptible to health and nutrition problems. The nutritional problem that needs to be watched out in the elderly group is obesity. Elderly with obesity are at greater risk of experiencing degenerative diseases compared to the elderly who have normal nutritional status. This activity is divided into three stages in its implementation. First stage is a preliminary study by conducting nutritional screening to determine the nutritional problems. The second stage is data analysis and preparation of educational materials according to the results of the preliminary study. The last stage is performing nutrition education to the elderly. The results of the preliminary study that have been carried out show that the majority of the elderly in RT 04 RW 01 Kertorejo Hamlet Peniwen Village, Kromengan District, Malang Regency have more nutritional status with a high calorie consumption pattern. Based on these results, educational activities related to balanced nutrition were carried out with the result of increasing knowledge of the elderly who were accompanied by the family.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem caused by cumulative and continuous malnutrition resulting in children being too short for their age. The percentage of stunted under-five children in 2021 in East Java province was 23.5%. Meanwhile, in Mojokerto District, the stunting prevalence was 27.4%, above the stunting prevalence in East Java province. The local government agency at a regency/municipality level up to a village level plays a role as a policy creator and an implementor; they need to know well about various matters related to stunting to achieve the goal, which is decreasing the stunting rate. This activity aimed to improve the stakeholders’ knowledge as the policymakers on stunting and its preventive efforts. The method used in this study was a cross-sectional method using a quantitative survey. The activity consisted of three stages: first, distributing pre-test questionnaires related to materials that would be given; second, conducting education to the stakeholders by three speakers and was followed by a discussion; third, distributing post-test questionnaires to measure the respondents’ understandings of the education that had been given. The findings of this study indicated that there was a significant difference in the average knowledge of stunting dan the preventive efforts before and after conducting education to the stakeholders (P=0.00). This result showed that there was a positive effect on giving education to improve the stakeholders’ knowledge of stunting as an acceleration effort to the Desa EMAS (Eliminasi Stunting) in Mojokerto District. Abstract

Ischemic stroke is a common degenerative disease in Indonesia caused by interrupted or restricted blood supply to part of brain, preventing it from getting oxygen and nutrients. Without sufficient blood supply, brain cells begin to die. Various treatments for ischemic stroke patients have been developed and implemented, but are still ineffective in treating or preventing brain damage. Curcumin is one of the bioactive compounds which mostly found in turmeric which is one of the main spices resource in Indonesia that has many benefits as a medicine. People have been making use of curcumin as a medicine for various diseases, one of which is stroke. Therefore, this systematic review analysed qualitatively the effect of curcumin on the brain condition after ischemic stroke. The method used in this study was a systematic review of 8 databases in the last 10 years, from 2012 to August 2022. Study included was only experimental study on rats. Based on 19 articles gathered, there was a decrement in ROS, COX-2, iNOS, NF-kB, TNF-α, IL-6, Bax, Caspase-9, Caspase-3, ICAM-1, MMP-9, neurological deficit score, and an increment in BCL-2, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) in rats receiving curcumin intervention either orally or intravenously. Curcumin affects the ischemic brain in a number of ways, namely as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, Blood-Brain-Barrier (BBB) protector, increasing neurogenesis, and reducing neurological deficits. It is concluded that curcumin has an elevating effect in protecting brain condition after an ischemic stroke.
