Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the shadowing technique in improving word-stress pronunciation of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 8 Gorontalo. Using a one-group pretest–posttest quantitative design, thirty-two students (class VIII-2) participated in six scaffolded shadowing sessions. Pronunciation performance on a 10-item word list was recorded and scored using the Speakometer application; pretest and posttest scores were subsequently analyzed with a paired-samples t-test. Results indicate a substantial improvement in mean scores from 37.65 (SD = 11.29) at pretest to 70.03 (SD = 11.90) at posttest, and the difference was statistically significant (paired t, p = .000), supporting the alternative hypothesis that shadowing significantly enhances word-stress accuracy. Classroom observations suggested that gains stemmed from improved stress placement, clearer vowel reduction in unstressed syllables, and greater prosodic automaticity following graded practice and peer/teacher feedback. While limitations include the single-group design, single-class sample, and short intervention window, findings suggest that teacher-guided shadowing combined with app-based feedback is a practical and effective method for addressing word-stress issues in EFL middle-school contexts. Implications for pedagogy and directions for controlled, larger-scale studies are discussed.

Abstract

This community service program was conducted at SDN 88 Kota Gorontalo to enhance young learners’ engagement and participation in English learning through the integration of audio-visual media within a song-based instructional approach. English instruction at the elementary level often faces challenges related to limited attention span, low motivation, and minimal exposure to authentic language input. To address these issues, this program implemented an instructional design combining songs with audio-visual support to create a more engaging and meaningful learning environment. The activity was carried out in three main stages: material presentation, structured practice, and interactive performative activities. Audio-visual media were utilized to provide contextualized language input, reinforce pronunciation, and stimulate students’ multimodal learning experiences. Songs were selected based on age appropriateness, linguistic simplicity, and thematic relevance to the topic of parts of the body. The results indicated increased student participation, improved pronunciation accuracy, and greater confidence in responding to English instructions. Students demonstrated higher enthusiasm and were more actively involved during singing and movement-based activities. The integration of visual and auditory stimuli helped learners better comprehend and retain vocabulary. This program implies that combining audio-visual media with song-based instruction can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy for young learners. The approach not only supports language acquisition but also fosters a positive and enjoyable classroom atmosphere in elementary English education.

Abstract

This community service program was conducted in response to the limited exposure of elementary school students to basic English vocabulary, particularly words related to objects in their immediate learning environment. Vocabulary mastery at an early age is essential to support the development of students’ foundational English skills, including listening and speaking. Therefore, this activity aimed to introduce and improve students’ English vocabulary through the topic “Things in the Classroom.”. The program was implemented at SDN 91 Kota Gorontalo and involved a group of elementary students as participants. The method applied interactive and student-centered teaching strategies, including the use of real classroom objects, visual aids, repetition drills, question-and-answer sessions, and educational games. These approaches were designed to create an enjoyable learning atmosphere and to encourage active participation. The activity was conducted in one instructional session consisting of vocabulary presentation, guided practice, and simple production activities. The results indicated that students showed high enthusiasm and active engagement throughout the session. Most participants were able to recognize, pronounce, and correctly mention classroom-related vocabulary at the end of the activity. The use of contextual and game-based learning strategies helped students understand and retain the new vocabulary more effectively. This program implies that interactive and contextual vocabulary instruction is effective in supporting young learners’ English acquisition. It is recommended that similar community service programs be conducted continuously to strengthen students’ basic English competence and increase their confidence in using simple English vocabulary.
