Abstract

This article discusses the result of research on a manuscript called Chinese Chronicles on Sam Po Kong Temple found in a manuscript from Cirebon. This research used a historical method consisting of 4 stages: heuristics, criticism interpretation, and historiography using analytic descriptive method. This research aims to prove that the chronicles are as secondary historical evidence, not a primary one. These Chinese chronicles are a copy of the manuscript. It is estimated that the copy was made in the Dutch colonial era after 1928. The Chronicles tell the life of the Moslem Chinese in Nusantara, especially Java Island, after Cheng Ho’s voyage to Nusantara when it was still under Majapahit kingdom sovereignty.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the influence of Russian vocabulary and grammar on the formation of the personalities of its speakers. In the Russian context, vocabulary and grammar play an important role in establishing communication patterns and the cultural identity of its speakers. This study used the qualitative descriptive method. The data were classified based on cultural data and vocabulary contained in anecdotes, phraseologies, folklore, the pronominal use of vy ‘you' and ty 'you', the formation of atroponyms using suffixes, the use of exclamation marks, and the use of numbers. The results of this study show that stereotypes, phraseologies, folklore, vy ‘you' and ty 'you' pronouns, anthroponic suffixes, interjections, and the use of numbers can shape the character of speakers. All these elements affect how words, grammar, and sentence structure are used in Russian. In addition, it can affect the characteristics of the speaker, including attitudes, values, and thinking patterns. This research can provide a deeper understanding of how language plays an important role in shaping an individual's personality in a Russian linguistic context, as well as its implications for understanding the culture and identity of Russian-speaking peoples.

Abstract

There is a scarcity of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) studies on the representation of social actors in news media, thus this study addressed this research gap by analysing the way news represented the French President Emmanuel Macron, regarding his controversial support of Samuel Paty, a history teacher in France who was murdered because he showed a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad in his class. This research aims to see the representation of Emmanuel Macron from the perspective of the French media, The Connexion France, which published their news in English language online to reach world-wide audience. Four articles of the news were purposively selected for this CDA study, which were published from October 18 until November 1, 2020. The French President’s representation was analysed with the nomination and predication strategies. Results showed that the Connexion France uses four nomination strategies to refer Emmanuel Macron. The professional anthroponyms refer to Emmanual Macron as “the President”, proper names as “Emmanuel Macron” to be the centre of the discourse, synecdoche as “Emmanuel Macron”, and deixis as “he” to avoid repetition the subject of the text. Two predication strategies were also used, the explicit predicate of how the President “has promised” action against Islamists and presupposition from the way the news linked pictures of boycotted French supermarket products with the President. This research provides a take on fresh news with CDA and can beneficial for the students who learn English language by showing how the media uses language for political figures.

Abstract

Studies on indigenous communities have been conducted with various results on cultural elements as their research focus. Language, as one of those elements, is an essential factor in the survival of the traditions and beliefs. This article discusses how the Jalawastu community maintains their indigenous language of Brebes Sundanese dialect in Javanese-speaking culture in Central Java. The novelty of this study was to discover how the traditional community perceived their language, why they needed to maintain it, and what obstacles they had in the process.  This ethnographic research was conducted in Jalawastu Cultural Village in Desa Ciseureuh, Kecamatan Ketanggungan, Kabupaten Brebes between October 2022 and May 2023. Data was collected using in-depth interviews and observation. Those who participated in this study were kuncen, (cultural council chief), pemangku adat (traditional ruler), kepala dusun (the village chief), and  Jalawastu community member. The study revealed that the community attempted to maintain their dialect because they viewed the importance of their language in their daily verbal interaction, both in social activities and rituals, and the need to hold their social identity as Jalawastu village members. The attempt to preserve the use of the language was based on the social belief, that is, to respect their ancestors in order to avoid misfortunes. These efforts were once hindered when the provincial government imposed the language policy to teach only Javanese in elementary schools instead of Sundanese. With Brebes Bupati's regional decrees, they could eventually teach back the language in formal elementary schools.

Abstract

Many people's ignore two Chinese Muslim figures (Tan Eng Hoat and Tan Sam Tjai) and their relationship with the Klenteng Talang is because there are not many local ancient texts that contain them or tell about them. The only text that contains the existence of these two figures and their relationship with the Klenteng Talang is the Klenteng Talang China News. To be able to reveal again the two figures mentioned above and the Klenteng Talang, we need to look again at the Chinese news about the Klenteng Talang, Cirebon. This research aims to re-reveal the role of Tan Eng Hoat and Tan Sam Tjai in the history of the Cirebon Kingdom based on the Chinese news of Klenteng Talang and its current relationship with the Chinese temple in Cirebon. Using intertextual approach with historical method was used in four stages of work, namely heuristic, criticism, interpretation, and historiography to the writings of the Chinese News text of Klenteng Talang. Our informants consists of care takers of Klenteng Talang and official of Harbourmaster and Port Authority Office in Muara Jati. The findings indicate that there is an influence of Chinese Muslims in the history of Cirebon, one of the archaeological remains of which is the Klenteng Talang building in Cirebon.   Klenteng Talang, Tan Eng Hoat, and Tan Sam Tjai had a very close relationship in the history of the Cirebon Kingdom in the Chinese news about the Chinese Temple. Although Tan Eng Hoat and Tan Sam Tjai were Muslims who converted to Confucianism, their relationship with Klenteng Talang cannot be ignored. Tan Eng Hoat played a significant role in the early establishment of the Cirebon Kingdom. Even the idea of establishing the Cirebon Kingdom came from Tan Eng Hoat, who conveyed it to Sunan Gunung Jati. Tan Sam Tjai, who was younger than Tan Eng Hoat, also played a significant role in helping to finance the Islamic kingdom of Cirebon until the end of his life, in spite of the fact he left Islam.
